This is a great radio, it's not bulky so it was a breeze to put together. The diagram to hang it on the wall is by far the best guide to hang an electronic device I've seen. It works with my iPhone 3Gs and my iPod classic. The design is neat. I can use it as my alarm to wake up to in the morning. It's very compact so you don't have to worry about it taking up a lot of space. The only reason I give it four stars is you have to adjust your own bass and treble instead of it having preset equalizer. The sound is loud enough to fill a room, maybe not a stadium! I'm so glad I didn't listen to the negative review I saw. Be sure to bargain shop first.

Chestnut Hill Sound George Audio Speaker System for iPod (White) Review

Chestnut Hill Sound George Audio Speaker System for iPod (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
GEORGE does things very differently from most iPod products. The beauty of the iPod is it's interface, and Chestnut Hill has spent a great deal of time thinking about how users interface with GEORGE. What they've come up with is elegant and allows a significant feature set while remaining elegantly simple to use.
In a brilliant touch, the controls can be removed from the radio and placed in a charging stand. In this configuration everything functions as before, only wirelessly. You can put the radio a distance away -- with your iPod mounted on top -- and have complete control of both GEORGE and the iPod from your nightstand.
The sound quality also differentiates this product. It does not try to hide or gloss over the fact that it is a small box by using electronic tricks. Instead, it packs the cleanest, tightest, and truest sound I've yet heard from a box of this size. The bass is tight and musical, without the BOSE tendency towards flatulent exaggeration. Treble is good and articulate, without sounding harsh or edgy. And, considering it's size, GEORGE creates a decent stereo image as well.
Just for reference, I own a BOSE SoundDock, Apple HiFi, and have quite a bit of higher-end audio gear. GEORGE has proven to be one of the best-engineered iPod-related products I've ever owned.
Furthermore, the designers did not ignore the design of the built-in radio tuner. Connected to a Sangean Twin-Coil Ferrite AM Antenna, this thing pulls in each and every AM station that my top-of-the-line Sony Shortwave radio can. FM performance is also quite good and seems every bit as good as the tuner in our Tivoli Audio Model One.
Highly recommended, and we've just ordered a second unit for our guest room...
[UPDATE Jan. 20,2009]
Well, add "customer service, second to none" to my list of pros about the George. I recently began having issues with decreased battery life in the remote. I contacted the company at 10 p.m. PST, received a reply from Rob of Chestnut Hill Audio (within 10 minutes, via BlackBerry), and they promptly sent me a new battery for free. It's a pleasure to do business with a company who values its' customers and tries to take care of them!

Meet George, the first digital audio system to combine an iPod music playback system, fully-featured wireless remote, AM/FM radio and alarm system in one product. Designed to satisfy the discerning iPod user, George is a unique combination of power and functionality. Along with best in-class sound quality, George has a detachable front panel that functions as a remote control. Command your digital music library, AM/FM radio, alarms, or legacy devices, all from an intuitive and ergonomically crafted remote. The wait is over. See the George Video Presentation.
Remote Compact discs were invented in the early 80s, credit card-sized remotes followed shortly thereafter. These remotes were great for controlling CDs 20 years ago, but using Reagan-era innovation to control your iPod seems like a marriage of technology and nostalgia at best. George's remote--which measures 3.75 x 4.4 x 2.6 inches--is completely purpose driven, to give you what a remote should, complete control.
You'll never confuse the volume control with the play button, even in the dark. That's because George has an actual control that you turn and not just a little bump in an array of bumps. Navigation has never been easier with jump buttons. Hyper-search huge libraries with a few clicks, no more 'press and hold' til' you get there. In fact, all of the critical controls on George are distinct in feel and location and optimized for ergonomics as well as function. Spend a few minutes with it and you'll feel as if you've had it for years. That's intuitive. That's George.
The iPod has a great display in the palm of your hand. However, when you are across the room relaxing, that display is little more than a nightlight. That's why the George remote uses a high-resolution, backlit graphic display. Now you can see where 103.3 FM is stored without having to cycle through every preset button. The display makes it easy for you to search the music on your iPod as well as show you the information for the song playing, from anywhere in the room. Want to know how many songs are left on this album? Just look.
If you know how to use an iPod, you know how to use George. The menu structure and controls were designed specifically to match your familiarity with using the iPod. George has even added the capability to search by letter using a method common to every cell phone. So when you pick up the George remote, you'll feel right at home.
Radio George features "Bandless Tuning," eliminating the artificial barrier of AM and FM. Just spin the knob around a seamless circle of stations, no need for an extra button. This is not your father's radio. Using the high resolution screen on the remote, George not only shows you where you are but where you want to go. George knows you love to listen to the game as much as to Rock and Roll. That's why the AM was designed to be as great as the FM, and now you can access them democratically.
What's the use of having presets if you have to cycle through each one to find the station you're looking for? With four separate pages of presets, you can organize by interest and genre, be it sports, news, classic rock or hip/hop. No more guessing which preset is 94.5 FM, because each self-labeling preset is clearly indicated.
Sound Voiced by audio professionals to more closely approximate the way music was originally recorded, George emulates the multi-amped 2.1 systems which are now used to make professional recordings. Most table top systems deliver audio through a single set of small-sized speakers, resulting in artificial high notes and muddy bass. George uses coaxial (2-way) speakers that outperform highly equalized single cone speaker designs, resulting in greater detail and accuracy. These stereo coax speakers are paired with a dedicated downfiring 4-inch sub-woofer that is optimized for low frequency reproduction without excessive EQ or resonant ducts. The 5 speaker system is then bi-amped to ensure your music sounds more like the way the artist intended.
Great sound doesn't come from full-range 1-inch and 2-inch speakers, nor does it come from small boxes. George's size (14.25 x 5 x 8.6 inches) was determined not only by the internal components but also by optimizing the acoustics. Giving the speakers room to breath is what gives George the 'big system' sound in a compact table top size.
Despite popular convention, a system of this size on your night stand not only looks bad but sounds bad too. Optimum position for listening is in front of the speakers, not next to them. The available Charging Stand for George's remote allowing you to place the speakers anywhere in the room that sounds the best while keeping full control of George at arms reach.
A System with a Future George is smart and designed to get smarter. While other products fade with time, George improves and expands to fit your life. From changing its look to expanding its uses, George actually has a future.
Choose one of the optional wood panels and matching speaker grills to tailor George to your decor. Add the charging stand so that you can have full control of George in only a 4" footprint.
Update the software to take advantage of continuing enhancements. George is built to be the best music system today and it's also designed to continue to grow.

Juke Box: While George offers the best in tabletop sound, no tabletop playback device can match the "big systems" that may reside in your living or media room. Plug George's Preamp Out into your big system, and with the music collection in your iPod, you may just have the world's best juke box right in your home and at your fingertips via George's remote control.
Alarms: George has many different types of alarms, from nap and sleep timers to dual or one time alarms. Big day ahead? Pick the perfect song from your library to get you going in the morning, and don't worry about making sure that tune is queued up on your iPod when going to sleep. Just pick the song when you set the alarm and let George take care of the rest. Like headlines in the morning? Wake to any radio station. Heavy sleeper? You can set the wake up volume to be louder than whatever you are listening to for relaxation. And it's all easier to use than your conventional alarm clock.
Updates: Chestnut Hill Sound has enabled George with the ability to grow over time. A USB port on the back panel of George allows for software updates and upgrades. Hardware modules can be added as well.
Accessories: Choose from different wood shells and matching grill covers to suit George to fit your taste and room decor. With the included charging stand kit, the George makes an excellent the George makes an excellent hi-fi alarm clock for your bedroom or office. The stand charges the remote, and creates the smallest, most feature packed alarm clock your nightstand will ever see. The kit even includes a grille cover to replace the remote to maintain George's clean appearance. The flexibility provided by the charging stand allows you to place the speakers for optimum acoustics without sacrificing any control of George's features.

Cables Unlimited Wireless Fully Waterproof Shower Speaker With Dock Transmitter. Review

Cables Unlimited Wireless Fully Waterproof Shower Speaker With Dock Transmitter.

This looks like a great product. However, it does not work. The first time I used it, the speaker would not stay on. I had brand new batteries in the speaker and the dock was plugged into the wall, and the speaker kept turning off. I continued to try it, thinking that maybe it was because it was wet and having problems, however even when it was dry the speaker wouldn't stay on. It would be on for a few minutes, but then would shut off. When I could get it to stay on for a little while, the music would cut in and out. The dock was less than 10 feet away with my ipod plugged into it. It was absolutely horrible.

Average Reviews:

This is the perfect little system if you want to listen to your iPod tunes in your cubicle or work area, or at home in one particular room (bedroom, kitchen, etc). It's not meant for really large areas and at only 4 watts isn't going to crank out sound that rattles the windows, but that's not what I bought it for. The sound is crisp, clear and consistent, the clock, alarm and radio also work well. Since this is a basic system you control it using the iPod wheel rather than through the buttons on top. I've used this daily since I got it and it sounds as good as day one. I've used both a 30 and classic 80 gig iPod with this because they provide different size shims. If I wear this out for whatever reason I'd definitely buy another since it's already outlasted a previous (higher-priced) system I had by a different manufacturer. I think this great for the price and the size fits just about anywhere without being too obtrusive or bulky. Edit 7/7/08: Still works and sounds great. The only problem I've experienced is the antenna seems delicate and broke off (probably due to user error, aka me). I don't get radio reception where I use this (my office) so it's not really a problem, but if you are going to be using it, take care when extending and retracting it.

The CR1 Portable Clock Radio Music System from iSymphony features a built-in universal dock for iPod that charges your iPod while it's docked. Listen to your iPod or FM stereo and AM analog tuner. The alarm clock function allows you to wake up to your favorite radio station or buzzer alarm. Removable dock adapters are included to fit all docking iPod models. Also, an auxiliary input is available for any external audio player, and an AC/DC adapter is included for power or backup with 6 C-cell batteries. Experience great sound with 4-watt output power.

iPod Shuffle Compatibility iSymphony products offer limited compatibility with both the original (white, first-generation) iPod shuffle and the second-generation model.
iPod shuffle 1G: You may play back music stored on your first-generation shuffle though the USB port only if it is in MP3 format. Songs purchased from iTunes, songs in Sony ATRAC format, or songs purchased from some online music retailers cannot be played. To enable playback, it may be possible to convert your music to one of the playable compressed formats, or burn it to an audio CD, depending on the DRM restrictions. If you wish to play back songs that you have stored on your iPod shuffle, please refer to the user manual for instructions on connecting the shuffle's headphone output jack to the system's aux in inputs.
iPod shuffle 2G: Second-generation shuffles are not compatible with iSymphony models for music playback through the USB port. Teac Table Radio and iPod Dock Review

Teac Table Radio and iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

The size, sound quality, and ease of use of this radio are great. It's clearly of a higher quality than the similar Sony dock I looked at. However, as a bedside radio, the back-lit clock is just way too bright. It's bright enough to cast shadows in a dark room. Many of the iPod docks seem to suffer from this problem. I'm going to try putting some tinting film over it to see if it helps. Other than that problem, I am very happy with the unit. It would be ideal for an office or another room of the house.

TEAC R2 Premium Edition AM/FM Mono Clock/Radio (Black) Review

TEAC R2 Premium Edition AM/FM Mono Clock/Radio (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Frankly nobody seems to care that most alarm clocks are complete eyesores. Teac comes out with this wonderful effort, including a backup rechargeable battery. However there is one major problem that seems to be cropping up everywhere nowadays:
The LED display! This thing barely has any contrast, so you really can't see it well at night. Also, even at the dim setting, it is like a flashlight. Instead of using a nice LED display with simple brightness settings, you get this indistinct display that lights up your whole room.
Teac, please put an LED display on this thing. The styling is great. The button placement is fine. As is, unless you wear a night mask, I really can't recommend this clock radio.

I've been waiting for this gem for months and it's been worth the wait. Compare this wifi radio to ones costing $300+. One of the nice features is its ability to connect with Slacker radio which, if you have a premium account lets you listen to customized stations that you set up. Another nice feature is the auto-setting clock and the weather report at the touch of a button. If you have a USB flash drive or other USB device (FAT 12/16/32) you can playback MP3,WMA and Real audio files as well. I hooked up my Polk stereo via the headphone jack and switched on Slacker...it really sounds good over my home WiFi connection. This radio also has standard AM\FM. This is really quite a remarkable unit for the price.

iHome iP98BR Dual Alarm Clock Radio with Dock for iPod and iPhone (Black) Review

iHome iP98BR Dual Alarm Clock Radio with Dock for iPod and iPhone (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hi,
I bought this clock four (this is important) months ago from a brick and mortar store (not Amazon, which is selling it for about $50 less. Darn.)
The design is very good, and the interface is intuitive. It comes with a nice remote control, which is handy, although some of the buttons could be better arranged. My only other design complaint is that the tuning/volume "slide wheels" are made from the same slick surface as the rest of the unit. This makes it harder to turn with your finger than it ought to be. But these are minor quibbles with an otherwise well designed product.
Here's my real complaint: after about two months, I wasn't able to play music from my iPhone through the iHome, which let's face it, is pretty much the reason I bought it. I already had a very nice Sony alarm clock thankyouverymuch.
I really thought the problem was my iPhone, and it took me a couple of weeks for met to get to the Apple store and have the Genius test it out. He ended up trying the phone out on an identical iHome in the store, and bingo, the phone worked fine, which means my iHome was the problem (Strike 1).
I called iHome customer service, that afternoon, and they were closed (Strike 2). Apparently their customer service people aren't interested in heard from customers in California past 4 PM eastern time. Then I emailed them, and received a prompt reply the next day (better!).
It turns out that iHome products only have a 90 day warranty! HELLO? 90 DAYS? I was 95 days in. Even though the unit clearly failed during the warranty period, I was outta luck. (Strike 3)
I was giving the option to have the unit repaired for a $30 fee, which shipping both ways at my expense. By then, I'm halfway to the cost of a whole new unit. The level of quality and warranty length are just unacceptable. I would not purchase this unit again, despite my happiness with the unit while it was working.

iHome's iP98 was designed with iPhone users in mind, engineered to shield and avoid annoying iPhone/mobile phone GSM noise. That means no "airplane mode," so you won't miss calls while your iPhone is docked. Also, the iP98 is packed with lots of innovative features, including alarm settings to complement your lifestyle so you can wake to your own custom iPhone playlist at different times on different days, a remote that controls the unit and iPod menu functions, AM/FM radio with presets, programmable snooze settings, and SRS WOW for an enhanced audio experience. With iHome's Reson8 speaker chambers, you'll be able to enjoy great stereo sound around the clock.

iPod, Radio or Buzzer Alarm Wake to your docked iPod, the radio, or--if you must--a classic buzzer alarm. Whichever you choose, a gradual alarm feature gently raises the alarm volume, so it's not too jarring. Dual alarm lets you set separate wake times.

The 7-5-2 alarm settings mean you can set separate wake times, either for every day or separate weekday/weekend times. You also can wake to the playlist or song of your choice.

Sleep Features In designing the iP98, iHome paid special attention to the other end of the alarm clock equation--going to bed. Sleep to iPod, iPhone, or radio, with programmable sleep times of 120, 90, 60, 30, or 15 minutes. Gentle Sleep gradually decreases the music volume as you drift off to dreamland.

What's more, an Adjustable Sleep volume solves an old alarm clock problem, allowing you to select a comfortable "sleep" volume level without affecting the "wake to" or listening volume levels.

Programmable Snooze The iP98's programmable snooze feature allows you to set snooze intervals of 1 to 60 minutes, so you can milk every last second of sleep before you're late for work or class.

Play and Charge Your iPod or iPhone The iP98's universal dock plays and charges most docking iPod models (in addition to using them for alarms), along with the iPhone. So when you wake up, your device will have a full charge as you head out the door.

Quick Time Zone and DST Switch Traveling or moving with your iP98? Adjust the preset time to any of seven different time zones at the touch of a button. Ditto on that pesky daylight savings time.

AM/FM Radio The iP98 delivers solid radio listening with PLL digital tuning, an external AM antenna for better reception, and built-in automatic frequency control (AFC) for enhanced FM reception.

Save your favorite stations on the six AM or six FM presets.

Big Sound, Small Package The iP98 delivers powerful audio with stereo drivers in specially designed Reson8 speaker chambers.

Reson8 is iHome's through-body ported speaker chamber technology. Porting speakers gives better bass response characteristics and helps the iP98 deliver sound beyond its size.

Auxiliary Input Connect external devices like MP3 or CD players to the rear auxiliary input for your enjoyment.

Full-Function Remote Control Enjoy convenient control from a distance with the included remote--control both radio and iPod functions.

What's in the Box iP98 Clock Radio and Audio System, remote control, docking inserts, AC power adapter, AM antenna and stand, and owner's manual.

Davis 6250 Vantage Vue Complete Wireless Weather Station Review

Davis 6250 Vantage Vue Complete Wireless Weather Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cannot say enough about how much I like this station! It performs exactly as advertised and is very easy to install and operate. It appears to have been constructed with quality components that should survive the potential hurricane winds we expect in Florida. It connects easily with the internet (using the not-included link components purchased separately) and it is nice to be able to access the weather "in your backyard" from anywhere you have internet connection capability across the planet. Folks are impressed when I "access" the weather at home using my iPhone!
As usual, I purchased this station from Amazon, Why? Because I know that if it did not meet, or exceed, my expectations it would be returned without the slightest hassle. Amazon replaced a huge wide-screen TV last year when I detected a slight black line running through the center of the TV. You had to stand off to the side "to see" the line but that was enough for me to ask for a replacement. Amazon shipped the new TV without even receiving the old one back! The old one was picked up at the same time the new one was delivered. Fantastic!

The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because the alarm won't work unless the unit is OFF (which also kills the lighted display). However, I figured out a work-around: set the "timer OFF" BEFORE the "timer ON" time to ensure that the unit will be off after you listen to whatever you listen to when you go to sleep. Yes, there's a TIMER function, but then you can't see the time (at night in the dark) if the unit is OFF!

The Carmen Car Audio Player (Black) Review

The Carmen Car Audio Player (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Carmen Car Audio Player has some nice features but actual in-car usage didn't work for me. Since that's the whole idea, it is being returned.
Background: I like to listen to audio books while driving. I have an older Toyota Corolla with a cassette player. Many newer books are on CD but enough are still on cassette that I am not ready to change the car radio/cassette player. I figured out a way to listen to CD's using a portable CD player connected to a wireless transmitter from IRiver (good reviews and pricing for IRiver on Amazon). It works pretty well and while not as easy as an in-dash CD, it's not hard. The main problem is that the portable goes through batteries quickly. I rotate 3 sets of rechargeable batteries and one audio book of 10 CDs goes through 6-8 battery changes. A power socket adapter for the CD Player causes too much static with the IRiver. Also occasionally I listen outside the car. so I mused out loud about getting a MP3 instead, easier to carry than the CD player and no batteries.
My wife overheard and thought this Carmen audio player might help. i've only had it a week. Its a neat-looking combination wireless transmitter and audio player in one. At home, loading music and other files onto it is no problem, but in the car it is very hard to use.
I realized after opening that it is really designed for Internet radio in cars not equipped for satellite radio. But it can also do MP3 files. So I decide to try it. Actually, the software that connects to Internet radio that is on the Carmen player is pretty neat and very easy to use. It's a cinch to find radio stations of the type you want, listen to them on the computer and save them to the Carmen in real time for later playback. It much like a DVR for car radio. You have to use your own software to load other music or books, its own software is just for radio downloads.
I managed to load the car audio books and some music onto the Carmen using standard Windows Media Player or ITunes without much trouble. But then the gotcha kicks in. In the car you can't see the screen in normal lighting. After plugging it in, nothing happened, despite twisting the Carmen on its hinge at different angles, pushing into the socket firmly, nothing, or so I thought. I tested the socket with my IRiver and it was fine. I gave it up as a product failure, but then glimpsed words and numbers on the small screen when I drove under an overpass. Ah Ha. In darker areas, you can see backlit blue radio frequency numbers, music or book titles and tracks. It's very small but readable. But in normal daylight, even cloudy days, it is absolutely, totally unreadable, much worse than a digital camera LCD in sunlight. You can't see so you can't change music or book chapters or radio station saved files or radio station freqencies unless you drive at night or in deep shade. You also can't lock in a favorite unused radio frequency for playback; you have to reset the frequency each time by holding in the change button until you find your desired frequency. That's a pain.
I'm stubborn, so I determined to listen anyway. Unfortunately, the static that accompanied the spoken words and especially music on different unused radio frequencies was too high for comfort. Radio station recording were a little better but not much. My IRiver is much superior as a wireless transmitter. I'll go back to my CD player. Maybe I'll try a regular MP3 player with the wireless transmitter.
So in summary, getting music and radio and audio books into the Carmen audio player is essy, but actually listening to them in the car ia a flop. It's going back.

PYLE PLD70BT 7-Inch TFT Touch Screen DVD/VCD/CD/MP3/CD-R/USB/AM/FM/RDS Receiver and Bluetooth System Review

PYLE PLD70BT 7-Inch TFT Touch Screen DVD/VCD/CD/MP3/CD-R/USB/AM/FM/RDS Receiver and Bluetooth System

I like this unit. Installed this unit in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler. The screen slightly covers the climate controls, but when the screen is tilted, they can be accessed easily. The sound quality is good, all the connectors are solid, and the bluetooth works great for both calls and music. Use this with your Smartphone and stream some Pandora, it sounds great. Picture quality is good, and the touch screen is responsive for a resistive touch screen.
The only complaint is that the screen will show some artifacts when it is really cold. Get the heat goning, and it looks fine once it warms up.
Great buy for the money!

Apple MA073LL/A AirPort Extreme Base Station Review

Apple MA073LL/A AirPort Extreme Base Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using many wireless routers (Linksys, D-Link, SMC, Netgear, Siemens...) over the years, since the early days of 802.11b, but this is my first experience with an Apple router.
There is no need to comment on the manufacturing quality, design and packaging: in typical Apple fashion, they're miles ahead of the competition. For instance, unlike all the other routers I ever used that came with a 110v only power supply, the Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS for short) comes with a universal worldwide power supply equipped with a standard power cord.
Performancewise, it is exceptional. I have been putting it through its paces over the past few days and it's barely breaking a sweat in situations where my previous routers (Linksys WRT54G and Netgear WGN824) would progressively get slower, or just plain crash and require a reboot. Coverage is excellent, better than my WGN824's which was already quite impressive.
Apple has traditionally be doing things differently, and it shows here again: unlike most routers, which are managed by accessing a built-in web server, this router can only be configured using the "Airport Utility" configuration program. The bundled CD contains a Mac OS X and a Windows version of the utility (I can already hear groans from the Linux geeks). The utility is extremely simple to use, although I haven't tried to use the more advanced features such as setting up another router like the Airport Express as a range extender.
One problem you might run into is the lack of support for "legacy" devices: although the AEBS offers a compatibility mode with WEP devices called "WEP (Transitional)" which lets WEP and WPA coexist, this mode imposes restrictions on the keys that may not work for you (for instance you won't be able to reuse an existing 40-bit WEP key). The problem is that WEP-40 and WEP-128 are not compatible with the 802.11n standard, so you have to choose between speed or full backwards compatibility. Also, you should know that WEP-40 and WEP-128 are not very secure: there are utilities out there that can crack these keys easily.
Note that 802.11n gives a significant speed boost to the AppleTV and laptops equipped with compatible cards (such as Apple's Core 2 Duo laptops with the 802.11n enabler installed -- you can find the enabler on the AEBS CD). Unless you own one of these machines, there is no harm in switching to a non-802.11n radio mode. How? Just hold the command key (or control on Windows) while clicking on the "Radio Mode" popup in the Wireless tab of the AEBS configuration utility. Extra, non-n modes appear in the list, and once one is selected the WEP-40 and WEP-128 modes become available under Security. If you select WEP-40 or WEP-128 security, you can enter a hex key by prefixing it with a dollar sign.
The AEBS also comes with a versatile USB port, which can be used to attach hard disks and/or a printer (USB hubs are supported). Unlike other base stations or NAS boxes, the AEBS does not require that you reformat the disk; all you have to do is plug it in and voilà! Instant NAS, all your files show up on the network. Some very basic access control features are provided. I plugged in the external USB drive I use to backup my MacBook, and now I can do automated backups without having to worry about remembering to plug in the drive: it just works wirelessly. The AEBS also lets you share a USB printer.
In conclusion, this router is a fantastic performer. Although it's one of the most expensive 802.11n routers out there, its feature set, build quality, performance and top-notch customer support more than make up for the price difference. I recommend it highly.

Apple has updated its highly rated wireless router with faster speed, twice the range, a lower price, and wrapped it all up in a whole new design. The new AirPort Extreme Base Station now has extra Ethernet ports for making wired computer connections and/or sharing network printers. It even has a USBslot, for connecting a USB printer, external hard drive, or other USB device. Also, it works with both Mac and Windows machines.
About 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station is compatible with the 802.11n draft specification, the new, all-but-finalized (as of February, 2007) standard for wireless networking, or Wi-Fi. Apple says their 802.11n is up to five times faster than the currently ubiquitous 802.11g. It uses three discreet antennas that not only double its range over previous AirPort base stations, but allows up to 50 simultaneous connections. Unless you're an office manager, school principal or a cafe owner, you probably don't care about that much capacity. Still, it's nice to know you can, say, telecommute over the Internet while someone else in your household is streaming video without slowing each other down. Thankfully, AirPort Extreme is backward compatible with 802.11a/b/g devices. Apple does caution, however, that "speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network."

And while setting up a Wi-Fi network in your home can often be a confusing, frustrating experience, consumers have learned that Apple is adept at painlessly guiding even novice users quickly through a set-up process. Apple promises that their wizard will have you up, running, and secure in the time it takes to brew a cup of coffee. It offers WPA/WPA2 and 128-bit WEP encryption, as well as a built-in firewall, which helps protect you from Internet intruders.

Sharing Features One of the most interesting features of the new AirPort Extreme Base Station is its ability to turn almost any external USB hard drive into a network attached storage (NAS) device. Just plug the disk directly into the AirPort Extreme Base Station's USB port, and it will be accessible through the built-in file sharing capabilities of both Windows and OS X. The AirPort Disk Utility software helps you set up permissions and passwords, keeping the disk (or parts of it) inaccessible from others on your network. You can similarly turn a standard USB printer into a network printer. The AirPort Extreme Base Station only has one USB port, but you will be able to plug both of those devices and more in by using a separately sold USB hub. Like most wireless routers, AirPort Extreme Base Station lets you create a list of devices allowed to access your network. A new parental control feature in this router, though, lets you lock out specific devices, like a kid's computer, from connecting during certain hours of the day, such as after bed-time.

What's in the Box Apple MA073LL/A AirPort Extreme Base Station, AirPort Utility for Mac and Windows, AirPort Disk Utility for Mac and Windows, 802.11n Enabler for Mac, Bonjour for Windows, power cord, printed and electronic documentation.
