Sirius InV 2 Satellite Radio with S12TK1 Car Install Kit Review

I actually bought this from walmart for $28. I have very limited knowledge with electronics, and I completley hooked it up myself. My husband was impressed with my ability to do it. I used the fm antenna adapter, and it seems to come in pretty clear. As a back-up I ordered the cassette adapter. A video on sirius will show you how to run the wires. So easy, so cheap, so worth it!!

I purchased this tonight and cannot believe the sound clarity that this lil' thing has. I am very pleased with the sound however cannot give this a 5-star rating because the cord has a strange setup. Instead of being hidden the cord must wrap around the side to plug into the ipod. I have a 3rd gen nano (lil' square one) and the jack is on the bottom making it sit off-center. Also props the ipod a little off the back plate. If this didn't sound as good as it does I would take it back. For this price its definitely a keeper!

Sharp CD-SW440N - Mini system with iPod cradle - radio / CD / MP3 / cassette / USB flash player - glossy black

Great product. Both of my kids have similar systems in their rooms. The lightup speakers and sub woofer are great. The system is very easy to setup. The sound quality is really good and the amount of heart-pounding BASS that these systems can generate is surprising. The I-pod cradle works great and the controls are fully integrated. The remote control is a nice bonus. Overall this is a great system. There are extra inputs for game ports etc. My son has his wired into the TV / Game system as well. My kids both say that they have the coolest stereo systems out there. My son has had his for several years with no problems. My daughter begged to get a stereo just like her brother's for her birthday. Besides their Ipods, and the Playstation / Wii I don't think that there are many other things in the house that both teenage kids like so well.

Delphi SA10085 Roady2 XM Satellite Radio Receiver with Built-in Wireless FM Modulator Review

Delphi SA10085 Roady2 XM Satellite Radio Receiver with Built-in Wireless FM Modulator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have not before been interested in getting sattelite radio and never thought I would, but after I saw my friend with one of these DELPHI Roady2 units, I had to get one too. My friend had shown me other XM units he had, but this is the one that got me to get XM.
When you look at this tiny shirt pocket sized device, you think it is just a controller or head for a much larger unit somewhere, but EVERYTHING is inside the small device itself, including the FM transmitter. Most FM transmitters on the market have been bigger than this device, but somehow they fit one inside this unit with all the other stuff it needs to do.
This unit is smaller than my radar detector. Much smaller.
And unlike most FM transmitters, this one has a nice strong signal! With my friend outside in his car with the unit, I went into my house and was able to tune the XM station he had tuned to on my radio in the house!
In fact, what I like most about this unit is that it is so easy to take from home to car so that you only need one unit for both. Right now, I have it tuned to a channel in the bedroom, but can listen to a radio here in the office on the other side of the house, or any room in the house, the FM transmitter is that good. You have a choice of several FM frequencies, and unlike those FM transmitters you tune with a screwdriver, this one is digitally PL locked to the frequency you select via the on screen menu, and it will not fade off frequency.
The audio quality is going to be better with the line out jack, but the quality of the FM modulator has been good enough for me so far, plus it means I can use any radio in the house or car without having to connect any wires to them.
OK, now some neat features not mentioned on most reviews and websites....
While listening to a channel, you can use the thumbwheel and read what is playing on all the other channels without leaving the channel you are listening too. If you find a song or program that you like, just push in the thumbwheel and you jump to that channel's audio.
Let's say you are in the car, and a song comes on that you really like but don't have pen or paper to write down the name of song and artist. Just push the button on the front labeled: MEMORY.Now that song and artist info is stored into memory so that at any time later when you are around pen and paper, you can call up that information and write it down! You can store up to 20 songs in this memory, then it starts deleting the oldest song title in memory once you have 20 stored.
You can also put songs into another memory that will have the unit BEEP at you if any of your favorite songs are being played on any channel while you are on another channel. Then one press of a button, and you can jump to your favorite song playing.
Each major city has it's own traffic and weather channel, and the current temperature and forecast is printed on the screen too.
You can program your favorite stocks to constantly show you the stock rate on the screen under song or channel name.
Another reason I never wanted to get sattelite radio in the car, is because of having to mount another antenna on the car, I don't like to put holes in the car.But this one has a magnet mount and is the size of a refridgerator magnet, so you can stick it on the roof while driving, but you don't even have to do that, since just resting it near the front windshield inside the car has been getting me great reception, so why put it outside the car if I don't have to? Some might just stick the tiny magnet antenna to the top of their radar detectors.
Same with indoors. I was told to put it in a window with some sort of direction view, but I have it in the middle of the room now not next to any window and it is working just fine. I ordered the in home kit, which will give me a seperate indoor antenna that is a bit larger and will probably be better yet, plus, then I don't have to take the one antenna in and out of the house, I can leave the one in the car and the other in the house and just take the unit itself in and out.
They give you several mounts for inside the car, and I like the vent mount the best, because I don't have to use any sticky permanent tape, glue, or velcro in my car, it holds on to the air vent real tight, and the unit just slides on and off of it and is nice and visable to read right over the radio. But this mount can be taken off easy and does not ruin the car or leave sticky residue.
I bet most people will not figure out how to use the vent clip, and no instructions explain it, but if you figure it out and do it right, it will never fall off and will stay unless you want to take it off. If it keeps falling off for you, you are not doing it right. You don't just slide it in and out of the vent, once you slide it in, in snaps onto to thin plastic parts of the vent and will not come back out unless you angle each of the clamps the right way. And once you have this snapped in to your vent, you do NOT take it on and off as another reviewer mentioned having problems with, the DELPHI Roady2 slides on and off of the vent mount, so you leave the mount on the vent, you don't keep taking it off, you just slide the Roady2 on and off the mount that stays connected to the vent, unless you are not going to use the Roady2 in the car ever again, then take the vent mount off.
And I figured since I got the unit on a weekend evening, I would not be able to get it activated until Monday morning, but XM had an operator to help me when I called and my unit was activated within 10 minutes just from calling from home with a credit card.
Even though you disconnect the unit from power and take it from the house to the car, or back the other way, it remembers what channel you were on last and all the memories and information you had stored in it.
Oh, and you can order a remote control for the unit too. It even has an infrared remote detector in this tiny thing.
NOW FOR SOME SECRET TRICKS!!
Not mentioned in the manual, and unknown to most Roady2 owners, are secret codes to get extra features out of the unit!
With the unit turned off... Press 2 3 2, and then push in the tuning wheel.
The unit will turn on without the backlight on!
This is great if you don't want to attract attention with the bright lights of the unit in the dark, or to consume less power if you want to operate the unit on a battery pack.
To help aim your antenna at the two satellites...
With the unit turned off... Press 2 0 7, and then push in the tuning wheel.
The unit will turn on, then press the DISPLAY button until the display shows BER%
Now adjust your antenna until you get the lowest reading on one or both of the satellites.
You are shooting for "0" on one of the satellites, as only one is
needed, but if you have a clear shot to both, it is possible to get low number or "0" readings on both.--------------------------------------
UPDATE: HIDE ANTENNA IN THE TRUNK!!!
--------------------------------------I have found out something very interesting that I wanted to share here. I put the tiny magnet mount antenna that comes with the Roady2 under the rear deck of the car under the back window. (The carpeted deck that the rear speakers are usually mounted in.) And as you can open the trunk and get access to and easily SEE the bottom of the rear speakers and see them hanging down from the deck, you can also stick the magnet antenna here!
Be carefull to understand that just putting any radio antenna in a trunk, where metal shields it from seeing the sky will NEVER work. NO METAL OF THE CAR CAN BE BETWEEN THE ANTENNA SO IT CAN NOT SEE THE SKY. (No damage will occur to the radio, you just won't get any reception!)
BUT.. on most rear decks of cars, there are usually lots of cut outs of the metal of the car (especially two big ones for the speakers to go through) and if you wedge this antenna and stick it on TOP of the metal, so that only the cardboard and carpet of the rear deck is between the antenna and the sky view out the rear window, this WILL WORK!!
Do not stick the antenna on the BOTTOM of the metal, but on TOP of it so that it is sandwiched between the metal and the carboard/carpet of the rear deck.
It is OK that the carpet and cardboard block it from seeing out the rear window, as radio waves can go through cardboard and carpet, just not METAL. So now, when you look at the rear deck, all you see are your two rear speakers and third brake light, you can't SEE the XM antenna, but the satellites CAN see it!
I have used it this way now for MONTHS without EVER having any reception problems. No matter which direction I am driving too, because the 2 XM sattelites are at such angles in the sky that they will always see through the windows of the car and reach the antenna under the rear deck. If the sattelites were directly straight above, then this would probably not work, since the metal ROOF of the car would block the antenna depending on which direction you were driving. I bet this trick won't work with Sirrius antennas, since their sattelites are always moving around and many times are straight above you.
But even under the hardest rain storms, I have had full strength reception with this tiny antenna hidden in the trunk! The wire I just sent under the rear seats and to the front of the car. The magnet holds it securely in place. And when the car is parked, no one can SEE the antenna, and the Roady2 goes in my shirt pocket, so no temptation for...Read more›

Yamaha TSX-130BL Desktop Audio System (Single, Black) Review

Yamaha TSX-130BL Desktop Audio System (Single, Black)
Average Reviews:

This Yamaha unit is pricey, but well worth it for us. It has outstanding sound that greatly exceeded expectations. The alarm functions are great and have several options to choose from. The alarm is also easy to use, which is a relief after some complex systems we have tried in the past (and considering all its options and functions)...we found it extremely easy to use for set up and to snooze/cancel each morning. My iPod Classic works great with the unit and keeps charging too. Unsure about whether newer iPod Touch gen2+ or iPhones will get a charge, but there are lots of adapters included to choose from.
My only minor complaint is the remote could be glow in the dark or lit a bit. The remote is easy to use and useful in a lit room, but when the lights go out, I have to turn a light on if I want to use the remote (unless I just keep my finger on a button).
I recommend this unit without reservation. Even the wood finish on top looks good.

This unit drains my ipod in about an hour. Drains it completely dead, I tried it twice. Also, despite item description, this unit has no S-video or audio/video outputs at all. Even if it worked, it's too complicated to use the alarm function on a daily basis - needs much refinement.

Speakal iPig 2.1 Stereo iPod Docking Station with 5 Speakers - Limited Edition (Black) Review

Speakal iPig 2.1 Stereo iPod Docking Station with 5 Speakers - Limited Edition (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The only drawback is the cutesy appearance which makes this unit look more like a toy than a serious compact sized all in one IPOD dock.
Having had 4 Harmon Kardon Go+Play and being very familier with the HK sound, I consider this a baby Harmon Kardon Go+Play. It doesn't have the same maximum volume but it does get respectably loud with true 24 watts and audio extension down to 60 hz. VERY clear, present and strong. A super unit that's only about 6.3 inches in diameter, making for the best sounding small all in one unit I have ever heard.
Incidentally, I travel with the highly regarded larger Boomtube unit reviewed on Amazon here:
http://www.amazon.com/Virgin-VS2100-Boomtube-Portable-Speaker/dp/B000ARIT5G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1225204410&sr=8-3
The IPIG walls ALL OVER the Boomtube. No comparison- much better frequency response, more presence, clarity, deeper bass, and louder. The only drawback is that this is too small to give stereo separation. This is going to be my new travel music unit. I tested it with wireless microphone and it works great also as an amplification system good enough for speaking to 100 people.

Sony ICF-C153V Large Display Clock Radio with FM/AM/TV/Weather Band Reception Review

Sony ICF-C153V Large Display Clock Radio with FM/AM/TV/Weather Band Reception
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall, we're happy with our purchase with one complaint. I wanted a clock radio with a weatherband, but it has nowhere that I can find to put batteries so it's worthless in event of power outage (which usually happens during a storm when I need the weatherband the most!).
We use it in the bathroom for a clock and to listen to the radio in the morning, so I can't comment on the alarm features. It's a little dim at night, but that might be desirable if it's by your bed.
I do like the daylight savings time feature and the preset buttons. It's also a very attractive clock and radio reception has been very good (with occasional adjustments to the antenna).

Philips USA AJL308 Clock Radio with 7-Inch TFT LCD Color Display and USB/SD Card Slot Review

Philips USA AJL308 Clock Radio with 7-Inch TFT LCD Color Display and USB/SD Card Slot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is a lot to love about this product. It's sleek. It's stylish. It's bright, bold and clear. (It can be dimmed!) It's a clock-radio with two independent alarms that also plays audio files (.mp3 and .wma), video (mpeg4 and divx codices) and photo slide shows (.jpg only). It has built-in "relaxation" sounds to help you fall asleep. It has so much going for it! And just when you think it can't get any better...
It doesn't get better. It slips a little. You start thinking to yourself, "If only..." and "Why didn't they just take the next step?" Why isn't there a tiny bit of built-in memory so that I don't need a SD card or USB stick to be attached to change the cute-but-becoming-annoying default photo? Why can't I select an audio file on the SD or USB as my alarm music? Why only three built-in sounds for the "relaxation" music? Why isn't there an AM tuner? Why isn't there a headphone jack? Why can I only display JPEG-format images? For a widescreen 7" LCD picture frame, why is the resolution only 480 x 234? Why isn't there a back-up battery?
This is such a near-perfect little gadget that it's painful to see how close Philips came to making the best device on the market. Yet despite these flaws, it is still so wonderful that it demands four stars. Lucky for Philips, there don't seem to be any viable alternatives with all of the features it does have at this price point... yet.
And regarding the day-of-the-week issue: Philips posted a firmware update on their Web site on September 14, 2007, that fixes this issue. Visit the Philips Web site, type in "AJL308" to find the product page, select the Support link tab (just above and to the right of the product image), and scroll down to the Software section. There is a PDF read-me file and a ZIP file with the actual firmware update. Read the PDF and carefully follow its directions to update the firmware. You'll need a USB drive to transfer the firmware update to your AJL308, and it takes several minutes to complete the update, but once it's done the day of the week should be correct.

The reception is HORRIBLE, it is even worse than horrible. I live in an area where reception is never a problem, but when on my walk, I was lucky if I had a total of 60 seconds of clear reception. There is a button for local versus further away stations, that made no difference in the reception. Maybe if you were standing in the lobby of the radio station would you be able to actually tune it in. I have had much cheaper radios that worked far better than this one. The only good thing I can say about this product is that I really l liked the armband.

Sony Docking System for iPod with Wireless Subwoofer (Black) Review

Sony Docking System for iPod with Wireless Subwoofer (Black)
Average Reviews:

I really struggled with deciding on the "right" iPhone dock for me. I considered the Bose SoundDock II and the SoundDock 10 and yes, they have outstanding sound quality but I just wasn't ready to fork over $300 and $600 respectively. I also considered the Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin and didn't purchase for the same reason. With that being said, I continued to search and happened upon the "Sony Air" concept at Best Buy. I plugged in my iPhone and loved the sound. Since this unit has a separate wireless sub-woofer, you get the benefit of a full sound experience! The highs are very crisp and the bass provides the missing link that completes the experience. The sound quality is amazing and when compared to the SoundDock II, the Sony wins without question.
Another advantage over the Bose is the fact that you can expand this system by purchasing additional wireless speakers(up to 8) for other rooms in your home. This is a feature that's not available from the Bose offerings.
Overall, for about 1/2 the price of the entry level Bose (SoundDock II), Sony offers an outstanding package that delivers a very satisfying sound experience. Highly recommended!
Good luck with your purchase!
BTW, for those of you who have the iPhone 4, you don't have to remove your bumper to dock your phone!

Sirius XM Wireless FM Transmitter Modulator and Power Supply Review

Sirius XM Wireless FM Transmitter Modulator and Power Supply
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This FM transmitter worked exactly as described in the ADs. I've seen other FM transmitters that said they worked great, but, the reviews told a different story. I hooked this up to my XM Express in my 2000 Accord, which has no cassette player. I didn't want to get inside the dash to hook up a cable. I turned everything on, found an open FM channel and heard crystal clear music. No noise, no dropping out, no hassle.
I do suggest setting up all three channels in case you drive into an area where a station overrides your transmitter. I drive 35 miles each way to work and have not had to change the channel yet. Of course, I don't live in a metropolitan area either.
It will also connect to your iPod or other MP music player. Although the sound isn't quite as clear because it's using the headphone jack for a signal. There is a model designed specifically for MP3 players.
I bought this on Amazon for $39 and is well worth the money.

Tao xm2go Portable Satellite Radio Receiver with Home and Car Accessory Kits Review

Tao xm2go Portable Satellite Radio Receiver with Home and Car Accessory Kits

I have been having a great deal of fun with the Tao xm2go. I even look forward to the daily jog! No more horrible music from broadcast stations. No more listening to my limited library of music. Now I have the largest variety of music, news, and information that one could ever hope for. Reception is great (apparently I'm near a repeater). The unit is a little larger than a pack of smokes. Easy to carry. Don't like the earbuds.....but they do have an inline volume switch. Any other standard headphones will fit it so I'll probably use some others. Nice to have a large disply. The buttons are easy to understand. Each button nicely lights up and is easy to read in the dark. Designed very well. An amazing array of accessories (most any other company would nickle and dime you to death for these). EXCELLENT gift for joggers, bikers, fishermen, gardeners, beach-goers, etc.

XM satellite radio wherever you go, even when you're on foot -- that's what you get with the Tao TXM1020 xm2go Portable Satellite Radio Receiver. This belt-friendly, compact unit comes with everything, yes everything, you need to enjoy incredible XM content in your car, at home, or on your favorite jogging path. Add in powerful features like program recording, artist and song alerts, and a built-in FM modulator, and you've got a must-have gadget that opens up a whole new world of listening pleasure.
Design At just under three inches wide and 4.5 inches high, the TXM1020's palm-friendly size makes it great for use as a belt-mounted radio. The backlit LCD display is large enough to display the wealth of information that comes with XM radio service: Song and program titles, artist name, a playback progress bar, a clock, channel information and signal strength cover the basics. Meanwhile, the screen can also display additional information like a stock ticker and sports scores. The device's user interface offers a circular control button that controls volume and playback, while a numeric keypad lets you input stations directly. The charging and cradle interface is on the bottom of the unit. The headphone jack, antenna jack and tuning control dial are placed on the sides of the unit. There's also a wireless remote that ships with the TXM1020 that duplicates much of the controls on the unit.
Features The TXM1020's channel preset function makes it easy to quickly navigate to your favorite channels. The 30 channel preset memory, divided into three 10-channel groups, allows you to organize your favorites any way you want. Meanwhile, the channel preview function lets you use the tuning control dial to preview content playing on other channels without having to tune away from your current channel. And if you're the type who can never remember the name of that song you liked, you can save the artist and title of up to 20 songs for future reference. You can even program the TXM1020 to alert you when an artist or song is playing on another channel. To top it all off, the TXM1020 features built-in memory that can record up to five hours of XM programming. Set the TXM1020 to record what's currently playing, or schedule up to two recording sessions. These recording features are great if you often travel in areas where XM reception is spotty.
In the Car, at Home, on the Go The best feature of the TXM1020 is its astonishing flexibility, thanks to a long list of included accessories. When you're out and about on foot, you can use the TXM1020's built-in satellite antenna to tune into XM programming. A rechargeable battery offers five hours of battery life and, as mentioned, the TXM1020 ships with earbuds for private listening. An included belt clip also cleverly doubles as a table stand.
The TXM1020 has you covered when you're on the road, too. The unit ships with a vehicle docking station that provides all the necessary connections to your car audio system, as well as a magnetic roof- or hood-mount antenna, and three mounting brackets (a flat surface mount, a vent mount, and a swivel mount). Power is supplied by a 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter, and you can choose to route audio to your stereo via a direct mini-jack to RCA connection (yes, the cable is provided!), an included cassette player adapter, or via the TXM1020's built-in FM frequency transmitter, which allows you to tune into the TXM1020's signal via your car's FM tuner.
And when you're at home with the TXM1020 you can simply plug the unit into your home stereo via the mini-jack to RCA connection that's provided on the included home docking station. If you like, you could also use the FM transmitter. Power is provided by the included home AC adapter, and the home antenna (yep, included!) has a hinged base for optimal positioning. The antenna can also be mounted to any vertical surface or an exterior wall.

First, let me say that this item works mostly as advertised. It hooks up fine with my ipod 5th generation and plays over the FM radio without much static as long as I choose an unused station. It also remains in place fairly well in the lighter socket.
My big problems with this product are:
1) Each time you turn off the car and turn it back on, you have to reset the transmitting frequency (station) on the unit. It resets to 88.1 every time power is removed.
2) Each time you turn off the car you have to also turn off (or pause) the ipod or else the ipod will keep playing. Likewise, each time you turn on the car, you have to press play on the ipod to start playing.
In my other car I have an old product (no longer available) that has neither of these problems. I don't need to touch it when turning off or on the car and it continues right where it left off.

SIRIUS ST4-TK1 Starmate 4 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit Review

SIRIUS ST4-TK1 Starmate 4 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall, the Starmate 4 is OK, but it has some significant design flaws that some thoughtful engineering could have easily fixed. I wish I had bought the Sportster 4. First, unlike the Sportster 4, this model does NOT incorporate the Auxillary Input feature for plugging in your MP3 player or other audio devices. Many of the online merchants advertise this, but it is not present on the Starmate 4 car dock. The addition of the Starmate 4 dock increases the size of the Starmate, which is thinner than previous models, but is now functionally larger in size because of the addition of the dock. A major design flaw (in my opinion) is that the antenna, power and auxillary output from the car dock are located on the back of the unit, rather than the bottom or sides. So, although the unit is physically thinner than previous models, by the time you install it, it is functionally thicker than previous models. In short, the footprint of the new Starmate is larger than previous models when you factor in the docking cradle and the location of the antenna, power, and audio connections. Since I bought this unit for a smaller footprint than the Sportster 4, I am dissappointed. I had hoped to install it flush with my dashboard by attaching velcro to the back of the unit similar to the way you could with the Starmate Replay.
The positive is that it DOES have a docking cradle which makes it much easier to move from the car to the home. If you don't need to move the unit around, then the Starmate 4 does not have any functionality that doesn't exist in the Starmate Replay. The addition on an auxillary input jack similar to the Sportster 4 would have offered a significant upgrade. If the designers for the next generation of radios are listening, I'd suggest spending time thinking about how people actually have to install these devices. Place the connectors on the bottom or sides of the docking cradle or provide a method of giving the user options. My 2006 Prius does not have any smooth surfaces for using the suction cup except for the windshield which slopes too much to allow convenient installation. Likewise the air conditioning vents don't work well in my vehicle for installation. Frankly, I'm sorry I spent the extra money for this unit. But, if you want a unit that can be moved easily from car to home, this is a good option. For flexibility, the Sportster 4 might be a better option since it does supply additional functionality for the same price.
Update: I've had this for 9-months now and it has worked flawlessly. However, I stand by my human factors design concerns stated in the initial review and think that a dock design could be created to give the user options for where the wires plug into the dock. We all jury-rig these radios into our cars, regardless of our personal preferences. The design of the radio, combined with the configuration of my car (Prius), required that I purchase an aftermarket windshield mount since the one that came with the radio would not work in my car.
