EOS 100T1RB Wireless Audio System with Universal iPod Docking Base and Remote Speaker (Black) Review

EOS 100T1RB Wireless Audio System with Universal iPod Docking Base and Remote Speaker (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have an older house with walls that fall apart if I start putting holes through them for moving speaker wire around. I have been waiting for worthwhile wireless speakers for some time. While EOS may not be perfect, I have been impressed with the clarity, range, and ease of use.
Pro's:
- Easy to use and very intuitive. I was playing music within 3 minutes of taking it out of the box.
- The wireless speaker worked over 100 feet away on a different floor
- Recharging the iPod Nano Gen 1(which fit just fine) was a nice, convenient feature.
- remote was handy. Ability to add up to 4 speakers is a great option
- several friends have commented on how nice it looks, sounds, and how they wish they had one in their home (we've been using ours in the kitchen)
- no skipping in any of the music; the wireless did not interfere with my 2.4 Ghz phone or wireless modem signals.
Con's:
- no off switch; there are blue lights on the base unit and antenna when it is plugged in as well as the antenna on the wireless speaker when plugged in. Seems like a waste of energy.
- the wireless speaker's volume is not controllable via the remote. Only the base unit is controlled by the remote. You can adjust volume on the top of the wireless speaker
If wireless speakers is what you are after, the EOS is a good option.

I have been an XM Radio user for years. Got the XpressRC receiver at Best Buy to replace another older receiver, and the backlight failed within 3 months. Judging from blogs and review sites, many users are having this problem. Audiovox has no solution. So I add my one-star review to the fray. Don't buy this piece of junk.

TEAC SR-L230iB HiFi Table Radio with iPod Dock (Black) Review

TEAC SR-L230iB HiFi Table Radio with iPod Dock (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This looked like a table radio that would work well as a clock radio, but it has several quirks that limit its usefulness for that. First, it has no buzzer alarm for heavy sleepers. You can only wake to radio or iPod. Second, the dual alarms (actually called "timers") work only if the power switch is off. If you turn the power switch off, however, the back light for the clock goes off and, very annoyingly, iPod charging is disabled. Finally, the buttons are a bit too similar to each other to make it easy, for example, to adjust the volume by feel. The sound is good and the external AM antenna helps reception.

Whether you place the Teac SR-L230i on your night table or on your desk, this fine radio delivers stereo sound from its integrated AM/FM stereo digitally-synthesized tuner. You can program up to 40 of your favorite stations for easy access. The iPod dock atop of the SR-L230i recharges your portable device while letting you play its music through the speakers. An auxiliary port lets you connect other audio equipment to deliver music through the radio's speakers as well. It has a selectable dual-alarm mode so you can wake to your choice of a buzzer, the radio, or your docked iPod. A remote control is included so you can control radio and iPod functions across the room. There's a built-in bass-reflex speaker chamber on both sides of the radio. They're acoustically matched to deliver rich, definitive stereo sound. This is a great antenna for indoor installations. I put mine in the attic horizontally about 20 feet from the radio. I receive really well and have made several contacts. Swr was around 2 without any tuning. It also works great as a scanner antenna, picks up VHF and UHF really well. Well-constructed with clear instructions included.

Logitech Portable Speaker S125i with Built-in iPod Dock Review

Logitech Portable Speaker S125i with Built-in iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

Ok, lets get something out of the way right off the bat: These are not big speakers. Say that to yourself before buying them. They can not compete with bigger speakers.
Now, that we have established that, My wife had been looking for something small that she could carry around the house to listen to her ipod. These are very convenient. While I would consider myself a little more of an audiophile then the average person, i have to say that these aren't bad for what they are. They aren't going to replace a bigger better choice, but they aren't meant to do that.
I like to plug my iphone in and listen to music while taking a shower. Even though these aren't officially iphone approved, they worked just fine. You get the little nag message about they aren't designed to work with the iphone (blah blah blah), just click no and then listen to your tunes. It even charged my phone while listening.
The bass buttun does add a little more punch. You can also put batteries in this to use it on the go. Since we haven't tried that I have no idea how long the batteries last nor if it charges you iphone/ipod while on batteries.
Finally, these are pretty inexpensive. So for the money they are a great option to get decent audio from your ipod.

Motorola Vehicle Dock for Motorola ATRIX 4G with Rapid Car Charger (Motorola Retail Packaging) Review

Motorola Vehicle Dock for Motorola ATRIX 4G with Rapid Car Charger (Motorola Retail Packaging)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
**Edit** Just got my Otterbox commuter (2 days early, Thanks Amazon) and unfortunately it does NOT fit in the vehicle dock. I was hoping it would be close enough so I could make some "modifications" but I don't think it's possible. There are port covers for the USB + HDMI when opened, need to flip backwards. My first idea was to cut those off but then I realized how much thicker the phone really was, The back of the phone gets double protection and sets the phone way to far forward for usb connections to line up. Even though this dock is built to accommodate the Atrix + case, I can only see ultra-thin cases working with this dock.I like this dock. It's easy to use, well designed, and adds some great new features to driving. Although I have never used a high-quality GPS unit, the Dock + Atrix gives me lots of new techy tools I'm not use to having in the car. The standard driving application (launched automatically when its docked) gives all the practical features you would ever want such as access to music, maps, GPS, hands-free calling, etc. You can even add/delete apps which is a great feature since I hate devices that add a lot of bloat I would never use anyways. If you search the App store there tons of great apps for driving as well such as tracking gas mileage, cheapest gas stations, repair costs, taking pictures/video, Pandora, and the great part about it is most of these apps are FREE...Back to the dock now. I use mine windshield mounted in my Subaru Outback and its sits at just the right height/angle. The included pieces which come with this dock have a great build quality as well. The included USB+ 3.5 audio input jack (yes the usb cable AND 3.5 audio jack are built into one cable which splits out at the end) are high quality and was long enough to route down the backside of my dashboard and wrap around to the cigarette lighter which means all I see is one cable disappear into a vent (actually a small opening between the defroster vent and the dash, and then re-appear next to the cigarette lighter. This dock also includes a very high quality cigarette lighter to DUAL USB adapter. This means you have an extra USB port for charging your ______. I normally stick to HTC products but Motorola is really pulling through. Can't wait to see what else they come out with next.
Pros:
*High Quality Build
*High Quality accessories (USB cable, 12vdc to dual USB charger)
*Easy to use
*Easy to put on and take off
Cons:
*Price. To me 39.99 sounds like the target price for this thing. $50+ is a bit steep and why it only gets 4 stars.
*Doesn't look like many cases will fit with this dock. Even though it has a removable trim piece to accommodate cases, I don't think any Otterbox product will fit on this thing as well as any other cases more than 1-2mm thick. Waiting for my Commuter case to arrive this week and I'll update if it does indeed fit.

Kensington 33169 Digital FM Radio and Transmitter for iPods Review

Kensington 33169 Digital FM Radio and Transmitter for iPods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This unit does both: receives FM as a radio, and transmits FM to your radio. Just purchased this yesterday, so I don't have good numbers on how long it takes to drain the iPod's battery. I do know that you can get a solid 4 hours at least. This unit does a fantastic job of transmitting my iPod selections to my FM stereo radio. I can take the iPod 30 metres away, around the house, and the music continues without interruption. I've heard that some of the FM transmitter systems didn't have much of a range, and was pleasantly surprised to find that this one is quite good.
For FM reception - you stick your headphones into the unit itself, rather than into the iPod's headphone jack - so I presume that it is just using the iPod as a power source rather than anything particularly intelligent.
Not needing to buy two different units seems like a good idea to me.
The one downside is that there is no way to charge the iPod while the Kensington unit is connected, whereas some of the FM transmitter-only systems can be plugged into car power supplies.

You've never heard sound this great from an FM transmitter this small before. What's more, The Kensington 33169 Digital FM Radio and Transmitter for iPods not only plays your iPod wirelessly through any FM stereo--including a car stereo, home stereo, or clock radio--so you can listen to your favorite songs without headphones, it also lets you listen to your favorite FM radio stations through your iPod as well.
This unique 2-in-1 transmitter and radio includes such features as ClearFM circuitry for richer lows, crisper highs, and better stereo separation, and a digital display on the tuner that lets you select any available FM frequency for either reception or transmission. This unit's backlit digital display is easy to read without having to strain your eyes, while its four programmable buttons let you lock in your favorite stations with pre-sets. Best of all, the unit requires no cables, wires, or software, so playing your favorite iPod tunes on your home or car stereo, and listening to your favorite radio stations with your iPod is as easy as 1-2-3.
Compatible with any iPod with a dock connector--including the iPod nano 1G, iPod nano 2G, iPod mini, iPod 3G, iPod 4G (Click Wheel), iPod color, and iPod 5G/5.5G Video--the Kensington digital FM radio and transmitter is backed by Kensington's 1-year warranty.

JVC KT-HDP1 Universal Car and Home HD Radio Tuner (Turns any Stock Car Radio / CD Player to High Definition Radio) Review

JVC KT-HDP1 Universal Car and Home HD Radio Tuner (Turns any Stock Car Radio / CD Player to High Definition Radio)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought two of these JVC radios out of curiosity for HD Radio. I hooked it up on my 08 Taurus and connected it to the aux line in input. The JVC tuner tunes well and I got a lot of new channels/stations. Sound quality is great. I also tested it using its internal FM transmitter. It too workd well but I thought the sound quality appeared less than direct audio. I may be biased becuase I know FM is lesser in sound quality. I rate JVC tuner full 5 stars.
I do have couple of negative point to add here. This radio connects with 3 cables. A 2.5 mm Antenna stereo plug at the top, a 3.2 mm stereo plug lower down and a 12V dc power plug from the cigarette lighter. If you want to remove the radio when you leave your locked car you have to pull out these three cables one by one and replug them individually back later when you get back to your car. This is an inconvenience. JVC could do better if they change the design to have one multi-pin modular plug as in many car audio systems.
JVC does not provide an antenna with this tuner. However they have a "professional" kit if you want to use the existing car audio/antenna but install is too complicated. It took me some research to determine the pin out of antenna (I tried calling JVC help line and the girl who answered had no clue). The 2.5 mm stereo plug ring is the antenna and ground is ground. The tip of the plug should be left unconnected because it brings 12V dc out to a small relay in the professional kit. Remember to keep this isolated or else you may blow a fuse if you accidentally ground the 12 V dc line.
HD Radio is great but has limitations. Unlike satellite radio, you will get your channel only when you are within the coverage area. If you travel long distance over about 50 miles you may lose the station. this will depend on the coverage of the station, it antenna mast height, terrain you are in, etc. You will have to search for new stations and in some areas there are none. I have not had much success with BC (AM) band yet. My self made dipole resonates only for VHF FM band and I may need a better antenna for AM coverage. This is for me to work on.
Overall it is a good radio, best bang for the 30 bucks. I am happy with this toy.

Oregon Scientific RMR382-B Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Atomic Clock, Black Review

Oregon Scientific RMR382-B Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Atomic Clock, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So far the device has entirely lived up to expectations. Atomic Clock feature works fine and the range and accuracy on the remote sensor seems fair enough -- there is often about a 1-2 degree difference between the sensor and main unit if set right next to each other, but this is minor for the uses we get out of it (a quick look at outside temps during the winter).
The only issue we ran into that was "problematic" was the Ice Alarm feature. This feature sets off the devices alarm anytime the temperature drops between 32 and 27 degrees or so to alert you to possible icy conditions. The problem is that in cold climates the temperature hovers in that range all winter long...so the alarm goes off continually every 40 seconds or so.
We just happened upon a solution that has worked perfectly. The ice alarm only works on Channel 1. So, if you set the outside sensor to Channel 2 or 3 the ice alarm is disabled and is no longer triggered. Obviously, they should have an ability to shut it off, but this is it...and even this isn't listed in the instructions.

Keep informed of current temperatures with this wireless indoor/outdoor thermometer. From Oregon Scientific, the thermometer allows users to plan appropriately for weather conditions while monitoring the indoor climate for maximum comfort. The thermometer's clock also self-sets via radio communication with the US atomic clock for precise time.
The sleek black thermometer is designed to stand upright on a tabletop or shelf. On the easy-to-read LCD screen, the thermometer displays the time, time zone, date, radio signal, indoor and outdoor temperatures, and temperature trends icons. A green LED ice alert light blinks when the outdoor temperature dips below 37 degrees F. Equipped with five language settings (English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German), the thermometer also provides an alarm clock function with an 8 minute snooze. The thermometer comes with one THN132N wireless temperature sensor to monitor outdoor temperatures, conveying data to the base unit from up to 100 feet away at a 433 MHz frequency. For more accurate readings, shelter the sensor from direct rain and sun exposure. The thermometer measures indoor temperatures ranging from 23 to 122 degrees F, and outdoor temperatures from –4 to 140 degrees F. Celsius display is also available. For thorough weather data, the thermometer accommodates up to three remote sensors, and records minimum and maximum temperatures. Low battery indicators for the base unit and the sensor appear on the display screen. The thermometer requires the separate purchase of two AAA batteries and one AA battery. To disable ice alert, visit the Oregon Scientific web page. A limited one-year guarantee covers this item. The base unit measures 3-3/4 inches wide by 2 inches deep by 4-3/5 inches high.
Manufacturer's note: Must press reset button on both sensor and thermometer unit after inserting batteries.

Bose Wave Music System - Graphite Gray Review

Bose Wave Music System - Graphite Gray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my Bose for about two years. I'm very glad to have received it as a present because, despite some of its fine features, it certainly does not merit the hefty, comparable-to-a-small-home-stereo price tag.
I like its design and its sound.
I don't like the following "features":
1) It is the most sensitive CD player I have. It will not properly play a number of CDs, especially CD-Rs. If a disc is slightly thin, the unit will either not accept it (you have to give it a push) or not eject it (you have to open up the unit, turn it on, hit "eject," and pull the disc out). This is especially annoying when my $70 boombox plays them without a problem. Refurbishing by Bose did nothing to change my unit's sensitivity.
2) It is not programmable! It doesn't program songs at all. The best it can do is "shuffle," "shuffle repeat," "repeat track," and "repeat disc." The cheapest boombox these days is programmable.
3) The lack of buttons is annoying: I found I had to order a second remote ($10) and keep it by the box. When I called Bose about this problem, the tech suggested getting the second remote and added that a lot of people had done that. My boombox is more user-friendly (it has buttons as well as a remote).
One can argue about the merits of elegance vs. user-friendliness. But the lack of programmability and the oversensitivity of this box make it a poor buy, in my opinion.

Sony D-FJ041 CD Walkman Portable CD Player with AM/FM Tuner Review

Sony D-FJ041 CD Walkman Portable CD Player with AM/FM Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Walkman by Sony offers music lovers the opportunity to listen to music files stored on a CD-R, a regular CD (of course), a CD-RW--AND there's even a digital AM and FM radio tuner! While this lacks certain features that a music aficionado might want (like the ATRAC system that some CD players have), this Walkman is really a very good choice for most people including myself. I have more than one Walkman but this is the one I use most often for when I am "on the go;" it's the one I don't mind if it accidentally gets a little bit banged up over time.
You can preset up to twenty FM stations and you can preset up to 10 AM stations--but this won't pick up AM stations very well unless they're located relatively close to where you are. However, that's still good for this price range. This Walkman uses two AA batteries and you get a good amount of play time out of the batteries if you pick good ones. It weighs barely more than seven ounces--great!
At first glance the controls on the Walkman itself appear slightly confusing but after about five minutes tops you learn all the important and most commonly used functions. The controls also make it easy to do basic things such as adjusting the sound, starting a CD and stopping it. The instruction manual is fairly clear as well. The Walkman does have "playback modes" but I rarely use them so I can't comment on that.
Unfortunately, I noticed some disappointments. The controls are rather small so you need to be careful of how you touch them with your fingers. Finally, this type of ear phone set hurts my ears almost from the very start of listening to a CD on this Walkman. I strongly suggest you purchase a better quality headset or earphones that will be more comfortable. (I have to take off one star for that--sorry!)
Overall, music lovers will be very pleased with this affordable Walkman. The features work reliably. The quality of the sound is excellent; and it can handle quite a few presets for different radio stations.

Philips MC235B Flat Wall Mountable Micro Shelf System (Black) Review

Philips MC235B Flat Wall Mountable Micro Shelf System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just picked this up and it's a very nice shelf system. It's not going to shake the walls at high volume, but if you were looking for that much power, you wouldn't be looking at a shelf system to begin with. The true test of quality sound comes at the lower end of the volume knob. Here is where this unit excels. No hissing or crackling noise and the bass is rich and pure and sounds dynamite. I played a burn job from mp3 files and I was stunned at just how good this unit really does sound! Mind you, this system does have a wee bit more power than comparable units, so you can crank the volume up loud enough for most people's tastes and there is no sound distortion at the high end, either. It's also pretty easy to mount on the wall, if so desired. It does come with a stand, which suffices well enough, if you don't feel like drilling into your walls. I only have one complaint and it's a minor one. While the speakers attach to the unit as seen in the pic, Philips should have also enabled you to be able to mount the speakers onto a wall, apart from the unit, to achieve a much better stereo sound. I have a speaker on the nightstand on each side of the bed and when I lie down to relax with some good tunes, it sounds simply fantastic. So, sound like a good deal? It is, and for a great price, too! Just make sure you have some extra speaker wire handy, as there's not that much attached to each speaker to begin with. Trust me on this. For the price being asked, in my opinion, sound byte for sound byte, this is one of the best shelf units out there. I listened to a lot of small systems in the up to and a little above the one hundred and fifty level and this system won hands down every time. A nice added bonus feature is that it was also the most eye appealing, too!

I bought this for my Hyundai Sonata. The price was great given the built in features. So many decks come with "ready" and "compatible" features--which is fancy for "buy them separately."
I installed this myself and couldn't believe how easy it was, however....
You will more than likely need to custom trim the dask kit. This deck face slides out and needs clearance. I had to trim about an 8th of an inch at the top and sides. It came out great with my dremmel tool.
I did another goofy thing and bought the wrong wire harness. I didn't need one for "premium sound" system. I just had to cut the electronic instrument and simply crimped the wires together.
So, for the price, I'd say this is well worth it.
Keep in mind that I have only had it installed and working since Christmas day. Hopefully it will last long. I bought the square-deal three-year warranty just in case!

It's hard to review the Squeezebox Duet without comparing it to the Sonos system, current ruler of this class of products.
Since there are already many excellent reviews, I thought I would focus on a comparison of the two, to help you decide which system best fits your needs.
Controller
----------
Both controllers are responsive, pleasant to hold and operate. They are well built, and their LCD screen of excellent quality and easy to read.
Squeezebox: thin, light, easy to operate with one hand, excellent battery life, battery is user-replaceable, comes with charging stand. It also features an infrared blaster and a headphones port, which will be supported at some point in the future (although Logitech makes no promises there have been demonstrations of prototype firmware using both features), as well as a 3D accelerometer (yes, like a Wii remote).
Sonos: bulkier, designed for two-handed operation, battery life could be better, battery is not user-replaceable, charging stand optional.
Networking
----------
I did not compare the two systems in the same location, but they both operate well with a range sufficient for most medium-size houses.
Sonos: uses proprietary mesh networking that requires to plug one of the players into the wired LAN. Other players act as repeaters.
Squeezebox: uses standard 802.11g networking. Can hook up to an existing wireless network, or the player can be used as an access point for the remote.
Players
-------
Sonos offers two players: the ZP100 has a built-in amplifier and the ZP80 doesn't (but it offers a digital output missing from the ZP100). Both players feature an Ethernet hub and an audio input.
Squeezebox: on top of the inexpensive player bundled with the Duet, the Squeezebox system is also capable of controlling all other Squeezebox devices (excluding the first generation models).
Audio quality is comparable, although audiophiles may be attracted by the compatibility with the Squeezebox Transporter.
Server
------
This is where both systems differ radically. Sonos connects to existing SMB shares whereas Squeezebox requires that you install and run the SqueezeCenter server on your computer. SqueezeCenter is open source and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.
Sonos: less intrusive, no software to install, works happily off a lowly NAS. But: if your music collection is larger than 30,000 tracks, you may hit the limit of the indexing capabilities, a problem with no easy workaround.
Squeezebox: requires simple installation of server software, so you have to have a computer always on. Server is too CPU-intensive to run properly on a low-power NAS such as the D-Link DNS-323
Internet radio
--------------
Sonos: Napster, Rhapsody, Audible, eMusic, Zune Marketplace, Sirius, Pandora, all configurable from the controller
Squeezebox: Rhapsody, MP3Tunes Locker, Radio IO, RadioTime, Slacker, Live365, SHOUTcast, Sirius, most must be configured and authorized from a computer using the SqueezeCenter web interface.
Support
-------
Both companies offer spectacular support through their on-line forums.
Summary
----------
Price: Squeezebox. A three-zone Sonos system will cost you about twice as much as a three zone Squeezebox system.
Capabilities: tie
Ease of setup: Sonos
Ease of use/WAF: Sonos. The Squeezebox interface is beautiful, but Sonos is more logically organized and simpler.
So, should you get Sonos or Squeezebox? It depends. Both systems are excellent.
If you're a tinkerer and want a solid, inexpensive system, the Squeezebox is for you. If you don't mind the added cost, want the best, simplest, friendliest user interface around, Sonos is still the ticket.
One thing is for sure: Sonos finally has some serious competition.

Honeywell TE242ELW Personal Weather Station with Atomic Clock and Dual Alarm Review

Honeywell TE242ELW Personal Weather Station with Atomic Clock and Dual Alarm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The weather around here has gotten colder, and out of curiosity I've always wanted to know how cold it was outside at any given moment. It helps especially when I'm getting dressed so I know how much I have to bundle (in the winter).
I got the TE242 as a gift. After looking at the picture on the packaging, the device is deceptively larger than I would imagine. With nothing to compare it to, I imagined it to be very compact and small. It's larger, about the height and thickness of a paperback book. The styling is nice, and the readout is decently-sized and very legible.
The device shows the outside temperature, the inside temperature, the time, and the date. It comes with a smaller remote temperature probe about the size of an altoids tin that you put outside. I hung mine up by the outside door. It receives this signal wirelessly, and also syncs the time up with the US atomic clock for accurate time. I had to set the timezone on mine (press mode until the date abbreviation is next to the time, hold up till the timezone changes).
The only problem I've had is that the unit sometimes loses the signal from the remote temp sensor, which means the outside temperature is blank. Holding up for a few seconds makes the unit search and find the signal again. A minor inconvenience, but annoying. However, it may have been due to interference since I haven't had any signal loss since moving. The remote temp sensor may have a channel selector that would help, I haven't looked at it in a while.
The main Honeywell site is hard to navigate, but finally I found the site for these devices: [...] I was able to find the manual there.
I do wish it had a humidity feature and that it didn't lose signal, but overall I'm pleased with the device. I might shop around next time, but I like this one.
