Wolverine ESP 120 GB Portable Multimedia Storage Player Review

Wolverine ESP 120 GB Portable Multimedia Storage Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent a while trying to find a multimedia device that could read multiple types of flash memory cards (Compact flash cards, SD cards), read the raw files from my Canon EOS 5D camera and have at least 80 GB storage.
This device met all those requirements and also has a big vivid screen. In addition to the above, it is an mp3 player, video player and has an FM radio.
I have the 100 GB version that I purchased from costco for $ 350. I took this along on a long trip (3 weeks), along with a couple of spare batteries.
It performed wonderfully. I downloaded the pictures from my 2 GB compact flash cards at least 15 times. It stored all my RAW files without a hitch. It could also read the raw files generated from my camera and display it. The download speed was very fast.
The Canon EOS 5D generates large files at it highest resolution and fills up my 2 GB compact flash cards quickly. It is too impractical and expensive to carry too many compact flash cards. This device really helps to bridge this gap.
It also has a tetris game, music and video capability in it, to keep my kids happy during long drives.
Highly recommended for digital photographers and also for people looking for a verstile multi media device that can do more than the ipod.

Designed specifically for busy professional and amateur digital photographers, the Wolverine ESP portable multimedia storage device lets you store and view thousands of photos, songs, and video files in a single convenient device. Digital photographers typically have to purchase multiple memory cards if they want to take a ton of photos while traveling. With the ESP, however, you need only a single card, as the unit's 120 GB hard drive stores the rest. When your camera's memory card is full, simply pop it in the Wolverine ESP's built-in 7-in-1 card reader. With the press of a button, the device transfers all of your photos and digital camera video data into a portable, self-powered mass storage unit. Once the contents of your card are safely stored in the ESP's memory, you can re-fill your memory card with brand-new photos--all without going anywhere near a computer. And because the device is battery powered, you can literally save your data anywhere in the world. It's perfect for traveling, sharing data during meetings, and just about any other on-the-go situation.
The ESP also includes a razor-sharp 3.6-inch LCD screen, letting you view stored photos and videos without plugging them back into your camera. Among the compatible photo formats are JPEG, Bitmap, Tiff, Text, and RAW images, while compatible video formats include MPEG-1, MPEG-4, WMV 9, and XviD. And as with many digital cameras, the ESP prints directly to a printer to save time and energy. The device is no slouch from an audio perspective, either, with support for MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV, ACC (MP4 audio), and CDA formats. In addition, the unit's drag-and-drop functionality makes it easy to transfer music files from your computer and play them instantly. As a final bonus, the ESP includes a built-in FM radio with 18 presets that lets you listen to and record your favorite FM programs.
Other details include zoom, rotate, and slide show functions; an included A/V cable for connecting the ESP directly to any TV, projector, or stereo system; and compatibility with a separately sold cradle system that lets you record directly from a TV, DVD, VCR, camcorder, or other video source. The ESP measures 5.3 by 2.8 by 0.9 inches (W x H x D), weighs 10.2 ounces with the lithium-ion battery, and is backed by a one-year warranty.
What's in the BoxWolverine ESP (with battery), AC charger, USB cable, A/V cable, earphone, carrying case, software CD, user's manual.

HDD082 Philips 2GB MP3/WMA Player with FM Tuner Review

HDD082 Philips 2GB MP3/WMA Player with FM Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Oh boy...where to start. I received this little 2GB wonder and was immediately impressed with the look and feel of this little gadget. Already owning a Creative Zen M, 30GB, I thought this would be a nice player for my son. After reading the directions, I fully charged the battery and prepared to download songs for my son.
The connection to the computer was easy and the GoGear player was found immediately. I proceeded to download songs. After about a gigabyte worth of songs made their way down to the device, my son eagerly stated that was enough (okay, he's 8 years old). I disconnected the player and it seemed to go through an initialization.
I showed him how to use the player, which buttons do what. I played the first song and...it locked up. I looked at the troubleshooting guide and followed the reset procedure. I turned the GoGear back on and it played my first selection. I navigated around the song list, demonstrating to my son how to find the song, band, or genre (yes, he understand genre) of his choice. He went on his way and enjoyed the GoGear for the first hour or so.
After an hour of playing songs, the GoGear locked up again. My son remembered the reset feature and continued on. After a while, sometimes a song would play for 20-30 seconds and then skip. They'd do this a few times, we'd reset the player...and it would be fine again. This happened until later in the evening when the battery (understandably) died.
I placed the device on the charger again for a full charge. The 5 hours later, I took it off the charger and it no longer would function. It would power up and then shut down. I tried resetting. I tried hooking it up to my computer. Nothing worked. It was dead. I worked with Philips for about a week to get an RMA to send it back.
I received the return authorization and shipped the devices (at my expense) back to Philips for an exchange. After two weeks, I received the new device. The face was all scratched up and clearly used...and abused. I charged the device up and hooked it up to the computer. I downloaded the songs and everything seemed fine.
I turned the "new" player on and tried to play a song...it played for 10 seconds and started to fast-play; fast forwarding through the song while playing it. The volume was extremely loud. When I attempted to turn it down, I found the volume button was jammed. It was obviously stuck.
I was done with the Go Gear players and done with Philips/Magnavox (I was burned on a VCR/DVDR last year). I have been twice burned by them with no possibility of winning me back.
Philips/Magnavox's quality is clearly absent and their customer service is less than sub par.

Sony NWZB105FBLK 2GB Walkman MP3 Player (Black) Review

Sony NWZB105FBLK 2GB Walkman MP3 Player (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a complete novice to MP3 players, and only a little computer savvy. I have resisted the MP3 craze for a long time now because I am an old school audiophile and prefer "albums" to "tunes". But when my FM headphone unit I used for workouts at the gym crapped out on me, I decided to take the plunge, assuming they could be had with FM capability for the option of watching the TVs at the gym.
I have to say I am pleasantly surprised at how easy this Sony is to use, and how good it sounds. I did have to download an updated version of Windows Media Player, but once I did that even a tech dummy like me easily ripped my favorite CDs to my computer, and "sync-ed" the songs to the MP3 player.
And the sound is pretty good for a relatively cheap set of earbuds, with actual bass and good clarity. I'm not going to give up my multi-thousand dollar stereo anytime soon, but for car and gym use, it will do very well.
My only problem is finding an armband for it, seems any elastic armband with a small sleeve would work but I'm haven't found one yet.
[EDIT]I did find a cheap armband that looks promising, a Nextar MA-ASAB01. The Sony fits pretty snugly and is still accessible due to the clear plastic pouch of the Nextar.

Sony D-NF340 CD Walkman & MP3 Player w/FM Tuner Review

Sony D-NF340 CD Walkman and MP3 Player w/FM Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After searching the net for a day, this was the best CD player I could find. I bought the unit as a backup for my (still functioning well) Sony DNF-430, a unit I'm in love with but I am concerned that when it eventually dies (as we all must), there will no longer be a decent standard CD player at all.
This unit seems to be the successor to the 430. Several improvements have been made over the 430:
It uses 2 batteries instead of 1 for longer play between battery swaps
The controls are much better -- transport function controls that were twitchy on the 430 are larger and better laid out
The remote is easier to use, and the controls are laid out identically to those on the top of the player
It "remembers" where you left off playing a CD and starts from there after being stopped OR (new) even after the door has been opened
The display is much easier to read, especially from an angle
The case seems more solid
The price has been substantially reduced
On the downside vs 430:
Maximum volume not quite as loud as the 430, and very high or very low frequencies are not rendered quite as well
The weather, AM radio, and analog TV receivers have been dropped (doubt many used these functions)
The LCD readout of song titles and artists on regular CDs is gone
No ATRACS (Sony's old compression scheme that had no real advantage over MP3s)
The parametric equalizer is gone (really only useful with low quality headphones)
The body is noticably heavier and larger both in thickness and diameter
The transport buttons are much easier to accidentally press when carrying it about as a portable (use the "hold" button underneath to prevent this).
The remote connector has changed, so only the remote that comes with the unit may be used
Cheezy earbuds and a car cassette adaptor are no longer included
Like the DNF430, the transport mechanism is a bit noisy, although no louder than the sound leakage you would get with good open-air headphones (recommended). No AC power adaptor is included, but there is provision for plugging in separately purchased 4.5 volt AC or car DC adaptor. And opening the lid to change CDs is still a bit awkward. The anti-skip mechanism still works flawlessly.
The important thing, the reason for the five stars, is the sound quality. While sonically not quite up to the DNF430, you still can plug in a pair of good headphones like the Grado SR80 and you've got yourself a personal sound system that rivals a good home theater setup. Other reviewers have spoken of "muddy sound" and "hiss"; I can detect none such. The low distortion and high frequency range does reveal flaws in source material that are not evident when that material is played on a lesser unit. On the other hand, I have heard distinct background playing (eg., a trumpet way down in the mix of a Grateful Dead song, the sound of a pick against guitar strings) I'd never heard on lesser players. When playing big band or orchestra CDs, it individuates instruments so you hear each distinctly instead of a single smear of orchesteral sound. This all refers to standard CD's. I do not use the FM or MP3 features. If you care about good sound, you realize that MP3 compression degrades sound.
Bottom line: for car or personal listening of standard or burned CDs while not too active, this is a wonderful device. While the size, weight, and easily triggered controls make it less than ideal for physically active listening (I still listen to my hearty old Panasonic while working in the garden), it is still quite serviceable in that mode.
I think Sony made a lot of sensible design decisions here, and I hope they sell enough of these to make it worthwhile to keep manufacturing them.

Update after 30 months of (frequent) use:
Just to let you know: it's still going strong. Since my initial review, I've gone through 3 CD players I bought as kinda disposable units for "in the trenches"; gardening and other activities where I did not want to subject my "good" player to all the banging about that heavy physical activity may cause. My rugged old Panasonic the cat killed by knocking it off of a table (not as rugged as I thought). A new RCA unit had poor skip protection. An older Sony model my wife had never used died after less than 100 hrs of use. And the 340 remains the only unit I've ever owned (8 in 12 years) whose controls are laid out so I can operate the unit in total darkness. Enough! For the $15 difference between the DNF340 and the aforementioned cheapos, why mess around? I'm getting another 340. Maybe I should get 2?
BTW, for you who complain about the battery being hard to get at: That's Not A Bug, It's A Feature (as we old computer programmers used to say). The tiny door that accesses the batteries tends to be frail, and with it on the outside, much more prone to breaking during a mishap. If you change batteries in mid-CD, it STILL remembers where you were and resumes play from there. Cool, huh?
For you who find the unit "noisy", I've figured out that it is probably because the unit keeps starting and stopping the CD. Apparently it fills the read-ahead buffer (used for skip protection) and stops until the music in the buffer is played, then restarts. A little annoying under some circumstances, but it does prolong battery life by not spinning the CD until it needs to.

what you see is what you get. The product has a universal AUX cable coming out from the bottem of the dock which can be used in any cellphone with a headphone jack. The USB port on the right side facing you is for charging your device. It comes with both Micro and Mini USB cables but you can use whatever cable you have in your possession. Depending on were your cigarette lighter is located in your car you can't really have this device point straight up. If you take a turn and the dock is vertical it will tip left or right, however this is if your lighter is on your dash instead of your console. Audio is alright depending on if you find that sweet spot in the FM dial. It's big enough for the Epic 4g however EVO owners shouldn't gamble on this. For all other phone owners this is a nice Car dock in a iphone run market. If you want anything close to this it will be in peaces instead of one unit.
PROS: All in one design, universal, stylish
Cons: Will tip if vertical depending on location of lighter plugin. FM tuners need a sit down session to find the right station to sync.
I rate it 5 stars because it's the best a non iphone user can get depending on the phone and the accessory support from the main company and other companies. The tip is a problem, but I can't blame the product when it's just were the lighter is in my car. My friend has the same model, but he owns a VW were the lighter is were the emergency brake is so he have it vertical with no problems.
UPDATE***
Well mine just broke. I have theory as to why, but I wont list them because while mine broke my friend's is still working. I'll strongly recommend you to logically look at were your cigarette port is located because this thing is very top heavy.

After much, and I mean MUCH, reviewing of FM transmitters for my Sansa I decided on Eforcity because of the price and features. What I see as a necessity in an FM transmitter is this: First, the ability to choose any station - a must especially if you live in the city so you can choose a station that is not being used. Some of the other more expensive transmitters gave you the option of only choosing 6 frequencies. If they're occupied or even slightly occupied you will not get a very clear signal and your FM transmitter will have to compete with that signal already being broadcast. This model has the ability to search up or down to find a frequency that works best. Second, multiple power sources - This model came with both a car power adapter and will also run on one AAA battery. What I like about this is that I can broadcast my mp3 signal over any digital radio anywhere. This comes in handy at home or when I'm at a friend's house and want them to listen to a cool new song on my mp3 player. It has a pretty decent range also. I tried it at home from about 20 feet away from the radio and had no problems. What's cool about this is that you could have a radio tuned to your frequency in different rooms and walk around your house and hear your music from your mp3 player. Yeah, I know I'm getting off track. Anyway, it's a great find at a great price. I didn't have any problems with Eforcity either. It took about a week and a half to ship however. But worth the wait.
