Pros: Relatively easy to install, good space utilization, good functionality (probably too much for this application), decent picture quality and sound
Cons: Will not process cable tv signal, strange signal delay when using the remote, magnetic remote isn't strong enough to stay on the fridge
THIS UNIT WILL ONLY PROCESS BROADCAST HDTV SIGNALS. It will NOT process a cable tv signal so don't even bother trying.
Summary: I bought the unit and started to install it. But the included "spacers" and mounting bolts were not sufficient to clear the underside lip of my kitchen cabinets. So after cobbling together some 1x2 rails, I finally had everything in place.
If you have average depth cabinets, there's not much space between the back of the unit and the wall. You'll want a $5 right-angle (90-deg) coax adapter to make hooking up the coax cable easier.
Once installed, and power on, we put in a DVD - all was well - and played the radio - all was well. Then came installing the cable. I ran a new cable from the middle of my attic to the kitchen - drilling several holes in walls to get there. It took about 2 hours. When I hooked up the cable, I got the dreaded "No Signal" message. Hmmm - okay, probably my DIY cable ends. I replaced both coax ends, and switched the cables around on the splitter. "No Signal." I completely removed the unit and hooked it directly up to the cable from my main TV which I knew worked. "No Signal." So I guess the unit is bad - which is really bad becuase we already threw away all the packing and can't find the reciept!
So I get online. Low and behold, EVERYONE who bought this unit has the same problem: This stupid thing doesn't process a cable TV signal.
Well I can't take it back so i'm determined to get something out of it. I run down to RS and buy a small, amplified HDTV antenna. I install it high in the attic and hook everything back up. The TV works fine. So now I have one TV with broadcast HDTV, which is probably a good thing in case our cable goes out and we need to know what's going on.
Apart from all that, my only complaint (so far) is the 1-2 second delay between pushing a button on the remote and anything happening on the unit. Irritating yes, but not a deal killer in itself.
So if you don't have cable (or don't mind not using cable if you do have it) and want HDTV in your kitchen, this unit my suit your needs.

Sony ICF-CD553 - CD clock radio - radio / CD - silver Review

(More customer reviews)First I owned the earlier LIV radio. It was only a C-note to buy, but it had a cheap plastic look about it. Most importantly, any radio is only as good as it's reception. That old one could not pull in many stations including my favorite most listened to one. The new LIV was pricier and I thought I'd try it to see if Sony improved it, or just introduced a costlier gimmick. The appearance is first rate that looks like a high-end stereo component and compliments my stainless steel appliances. The antenna is in the power cord like the old one and this cord was noticably shorter. They did something right as this unit pulled in more stations with clear reception, including my favorite station. The CD section works fine, but I use this mainly for the radio now. It sees daily usage in my kitchen and I'd recommend it highly.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this radio less than a year ago. Upon bringing the camper home from indoor storage the unit will turn on but nothing else on it works. I have tried resetting the unit, unplugging the power, and anything else I can think of and it will not work. I am very disappointed.

Sony ICF-CD543RM Kitchen CD Clock Radio (Silver) Review

(More customer reviews)I tried other radios in the kitchen, but none could compare to the sound of this unit. FM reception's pretty good too. The "kitchen friendly" controls are easy to clean. Mounting is done by drilling three holes, for which it has a paper template, and it has adjustable spacers to accommodate cabinets with recessed bottoms. It's about 11-1/2 inches deep and just an inch or two wider.
I don't seem to get any weather band channels, and the TV channels I get are very quiet so I have to remember to turn the sound down before switching to FM or CD. The timer's a nice feature for the kitchen but seconds can't be set and it takes a lot of turning to get to longer bake times, like an hour or more. The magnetic remote's also nice but you have to be able to see the sensor and stay within about 45 degrees for it to work.
Overall I'm very happy with it. The sound is great and makes spending all day around the kitchen less lonely, plus it doesn't take up any counter space. I do feel like I paid a small premium for the name Sony though.

This under the cabinet ipod dock, besides the obvious reasons, that it saves counter space and keeps clean because it is not ON the counter, it also has all the features that can be found on any other ipod dock, and some that you can't find on any ipod dock, including the many preset stations that is very convenient when I'm busy in the kitchen. The sound is great and you can adjust the sound many different ways. This kitchen clock ipod dock is a definite winner. " 2 Thumbs Up " I recommend this to everyone.

(More customer reviews)Looks nice coming out of the package. Five stars for appearance. No idea about battery life, durability, all that other jazz. I mean, how durable does an under-cabinet radio need to be? You're not going to put it over your stove are you? You didn't, did you? Oh my. Either way, the first thing we did was install it. Probably should've tested it first. Hindsight. It's 20/20. Plugged in my IPod to the "docking station" which is really just a simple output to the receiver, and it sounded like one of those track and field P.A. speakers from back in the olden days. The ones that make everyone sound like a Charlie Brown teacher if you're over ten feet away. All tin and treble, no bass. Thought perhaps after a while that it's just that auxiliary input... I'll try a CD. Err. Wrong. Didn't even try the FM receiver capability. This thing was installed yesterday and is going back today. Boo hiss, RCA. I am greatly disappointed. Especially now that I have four holes in my cabinet and nothing to show for it.
