2. Waaaaaay too complicated to set things. This is one of those, "We're only going to give you 10 buttons, so to set an alarm, you have to hit this button, then hit that button 4 times, then hit a third button. Complete pain in the neck to get to simple features. I might put up with that, but if you're the sort of person who is frustrated by utterly mysterious ergonomics, be aware, this unit is the anti-iPhone.
3. The system uses an automated CD insert -- you slide the CD into the front of the unit and a little motorized gripper pulls it in or pushes it out when you hit eject. After two weeks, mine stopped working. If I want to hear The Goldberg Variations, it's great, but I was sort of thinking that it would play lots of DIFFERENT CDs, not just the one I put in a week ago!
Bottom line: I'm returning the unit with my CD of the Goldberg Variations still inside it, because I can't get the furshlugginer thing out. I figure if it starts eating CDs in 2 weeks, there's not much hope for this as a long term addition to the house.

Sony MHC-GX45 3-CD Shelf System with Game Sync (TM) Mixing Review

(More customer reviews)With a budget of $300, I shopped around for minisystems, listening to products from Panasonic, JVC, and Sony. Panasonic systems tend to have a muffled sound. I quickly ruled them out. The JVC GT88 has a slightly tinny sound, but the JVC Z10 is better and has excellent bass. However, this Sony really has the best overall sound. JVC just had good bass - the sound from above seemed to get lost. The Sony has the best quality sound and costs $100 less than the JVC. Music lovers, this is your system. Rap/Metal Listeners or anyone who just wants bass, go for the JVC GT88.
Additionally, out of all the systems I looked at, the Sonys have the best overall appearance. The rest are way too gaudy. This unit is simple yet attractive.
Sony MHC-GX45 - A great deal for $200.

Sony MHC-EC99i Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Integrated iPod Dock 530W Review

(More customer reviews)After I came home from 5 months in Australia to find my Aiwa stereo not working I knew it was time to buy new audio equipment for my room. I like the idea of a shelf system so I began looking for one that was 10 years newer and fit my preferences. I went the stereo route because I wanted a radio and CD player and ultimately a tape deck, although this unit does not have one. I had read several reviews of this model and went into the store (BJ's Wholesale Club of all places) to test it out. Bringing my iPod, I was thoroughly impressed. I went back the next day and purchased this bad boy.
The stereo comes in a huge box but is managable. I was surprised to find the unit overall is very light-weight and set up is easy. Once I finally had it set up, I was immediately impressed with the stellar sound. This thing is LOUD. You get crisp highs, balanced mids, and thumping lows thanks to the additional subwoofer it comes with. I don't think I've heard an iPod sound as good as it does with this unit. As I have read previously, the speaker cords are a bit short. The satellite speakers are fine, but how is a subwoofer expected to be placed on the floor as I want it with such relatively short cords? I'm planning to get some additional cord so I can place the speakers where I want.
I'm very happy with this system and being a bit picky about my audio sound has proven to help me find a great stereo. All kinds of music sound great, from thumping hip hop to reggae to accoustic rock.
This thing is also pretty sleek looking, being a metallic black, modern looking, and light blue accents in the speakers.
Why not a 5?
-Short cord length
-Small display which is hard to see from far away
-No custom EQ, although "rock" mode sounds best
-No tape deck. I admit tapes are out-dated but it would be nice to have the capability to play them
Overall VERY happy with my purchase and definitely recommend this system to and audiophile who wants to pack some punch into his/her audio system.

Yamaha CRX-330BL Micro Component Receiver CD Player Unit Review

(More customer reviews)Lovely piece of gear. Superior for a secondary system in the study, dorm, etc.. The milled aluminum front and rich feel of the volume control makes it feel more like a fine audio system component than an all-in-one cheapie.
Audio quality is excellent. You can go to full volume with very little distortion. Check the specs on the comparable Onkyo and you'll see why the extra money. FM is competent, but CDs are stronger. Ipod dock not tested. Couple this with Polk Atrium 45s as I did and you have a great patio system for $300. Or, a bookshelf system with Axiom M3s for $500 would give you better sound than any one-piece ipod dock--Axiom M2s or Polk TSi100s if your budget requires. Note that speakers must be 6 ohm or better. Some, like one of the small klipsh speakers is 4 ohm, so check first. Trust speaker-only companies to make better speakers. Leave the electronics people to make the electronics and you come out ahead. The front controls are minimal. You really run this by the supplied remote.
Drawbacks: yes it is deep. The small facia disguises its size. It has TIM in the slightly pronounced high treble that reminds you it is a transistor device, and Japanese at that, but no one outside of a live acoustic musician like me is ever going to notice. It doesn't have HD FM or the ability to read high def DVD-Audio, SACD or even just HDCD, unfortunately. But, all that would add to cost and complexity. The sub-woofer out is a nice touch if you want to upgrade. The design goal of this unit was good sound and basic features, and for that it succeeds.
In short, a micro component that won't make an audiophile cringe, when carefully combined with the right bookshelf speakers.

(More customer reviews)I researched a lot to replace my old system and selected this one based on my requirement for MP3 and radio. I discovered that Hi-Fi shelf systems are not popular any more and # of models is very limited if you do not want to spend over $100.
I have it for a couple days and generally like it:
- it is a new one (Jan 2011);
- relatively cheap ($88, Walmart online);
- equalizer has about 6 options (3 on earlier model);
- sound is not bad for small size unit from CD and FM (loud enough for 300 sq feet room with 25 people).
- I think it has no more than 30 W per channel (not 50 W as advertised). There is a cooling fan inside, it kicks on when you use on high output power over 15 units on volume;
- headphone jack;
- long range remote control (up to 20 feet as tested).
What I do not like:
- a bit akward and looks cheap design;
- no input from other sources (line in or USB);
- very weak AM radio reception (needed to open its case to retune to improve to acceptable level);
- display is too small;
- it does not remember last song on CD if you switch to other modes like FM and return back to CD, you have to start from beginning.
With over 200 songs on MP3 CD it is very inconvient.

(More customer reviews)This unit is compact and has a great sound that is crisp and clear. I bought it mainly to use with my iPod. It also plays CDs; has a radio and a USB port. There's a huge, retro silver volume control in the middle. Every function can be controlled with the remote. After comparing this unit with the Sony at a comparable price, I decided to go with the Sharp because I thought the sound was better. There is ample bass and an equalizer with different settings. It's designed for a smaller room, but you can still crank up the volume to 30 and it's loud and distortion-free. Highly recommended.

Sharp 200 Watt iPod® Docking Station - Black/Silver (CDDH899N) Review

(More customer reviews)The Sharp CD-DH899N has ok functionality but the speakers that come with it are terrible. They had high-end distortion even at low-moderate volume. This was the case with all the functions - CD, radio, tape, line-in and iPod. Thank goodness the speakers are not hard-wired in! I swapped them out with various other old speakers, and my best set was 15-year old Sony speakers with good speaker wire, which were 8 Ohm and had plenty of power handling. (The original speakers were 4 Ohm with thin wires.) That cleared up the distortion, although I have not tried cranking it yet. Why did Sharp design speakers that can't handle the signal??? The stereo itself works as advertised. Note that the cassette deck does not have a record function, only play. Also, there are no audio inputs to the stereo except a line-in. No audio outputs either, only the speakers. The CD tray is very flimsy, the tape deck is a little clunky, I kinda wish an extended warranty was available. I got this new on e-bay for a great prices, so it's an ok unit for a bedroom for the price, but do not buy this unless you have some good speakers to swap out!

JVC UX-PL5 CD Micro Component System Review

(More customer reviews)I had a JVC boombox once, and it was the best sounding radio/cassette boombox I ever had. Therefore, I wanted another JVC product. I was disappointed that it wasn't as great-sounding as I had anticipated. However, it plays nicely. In retrospect, I would have bought the other JVC compact stereo with 100 watts of power. I didn't see the other one until I had already ordered this one. If you're reading this, I would recommend going with the 100-watt JVC instead of this one, which is only 70 watts. They're about the same price. I also just bought a Sony boombox, and it sounds much better than this JVC stereo.
