I programmed it to turn on everytime a new alert was issued for our county and the surrounding counties. I keep it plugged in on our night stand and it has batteries if I need to grab it and head for cover. We can hear it from downstairs if it goes off during the day. No complaints with this unit.

(More customer reviews)Difficult to program. Remote temperature/humidity sensor had to be within 30 feet of base otherwise had to constantly re-set to "find" signal. Wind speed virtually useless as it reads an average over a ten minute time frame. Gusts reading seemed off by 15 to 40%, as well.
One needs altitude and latitude and longitude in order to get accurate info from some of the features.
Weather prediction surprisingly accurate.

Within a week period in July 2001, all three LCDs went blank, the memory failed, and the radio went haywire. When I contacted the company about this, I received no reply. If there was trouble with a specific batch, it should have been replaced. If this is their normal quality, I would stay away.

Bushnell Onix400 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

(More customer reviews)This is one of those products that can either be a great thing or can be a great disappointment... All dependent on actual need / intended use.
For me, it has been a great product that met my needs. I like to do a lot of camping and hiking in the middle of the woods and all I need from a portable GPS is just the basics. Let me mark locations, get me from the car to the camping site or marked locations and get me back. For this, I don't really need advanced features such as street routing, a POI database filled with restaurants, gas stations, etc. For that, I use the navigation system on my car.
Having said that, pretty much, any of the portable GPS devices meet my requirements but what attracted me to the Onix 400 was the addition of the XM Weather receiver. That extra feature, for me was worth the price as it does come in handy to be able to see when storms are coming, their severity and to be able to estimate roughly when it will be on top of you and how long it will be before it passes once is on top of you.
While the GPS with the Weather feature has been great on my outings, I do have a few complaints, which I did make sure Bushnell knew so that they can improve the product.
1. While XM does seem to work during bad weather provided the device is out on the open, it is useless when one is stuck inside a tent while waiting for the rain to stop. The GPS does have a connector to allow peripheral devices to be connected, including an external antenna, but Bushnell does not offer such an antenna. The closest they have is a headset with an antenna, but is not designed to take the role of a real external antenna. Cable is short and because of it being a headset, I don't believe it will be a good idea to leave it out on the rain for any extended periods of time.
2. The cost of extra batteries. Only Bushnell batteries can be used due to their design. These batteries are not cheap to be able to buy a couple of spares, so one has to trade real time info for battery life. Pretty much, to extend battery life, once you get to where you need to be (Camping Ground),turn the unit off and if the sky shows signs of bad weather approaching, turn it on, wait for the XM signal to update the Weather info, then turn it off again.

For me, this has not been a major issue, as turning the device off is what I would have done anyway with any other portable GPS without XM and turned it back on when on the move. Just thought other users may want to be aware of this.
In summary, if you are looking for a portable GPS specific to outdoor activities and would like to keep an eye on severe weather, this is a GPS for you.
If you want to use it as an MP3 player or for urban door to door navigation...

(More customer reviews)I really like the convenience of having multiple alarm settings on this clock; it's handy for weekdays and weekends, or just random days when I need to get up at different times. The clock is also smart enough to set itself to go off only on weekdays, weekends, or every single day at the push of a button.
The nature sounds are, unsurprisingly, pretty tinny sounding and not terribly pleasant to try to fall asleep to. Waking up to them isn't bad, though. The beeping alarm is a pleasant beep, not something that'll yank you headlong out of your slumber, and the weather information is a very nice way to wake up, too, so you can know what to expect from the day.
Its compact size fits just about anywhere, and the large time display is easy to read, day or night.
If you're looking for a soothing sound machine, this may not be quite the right beast for you, but if you're looking for a hugely versatile alarm clock, this is it.

OVERALL -- after much researching of many brands, AM VERY SATISFIED!
>> I really love the clean, easy-to-read screen. Most of the other weather stations have so much information squeezed onto the screen that it is a headache to quickly find what is most important -- the time, the current day's forecast, & then what's coming up. LAYOUT is perfect.
>> The data comes from their "forecast" NOT actual reported local data. So far, on my unit, it's always been OFF by a few degrees (the real high in my town being 1-4 deg higher than what has been forecast this week).
>> Also, the color on my unit is stuck on "yellow" (70s) when it should have been orange (80s) & red (90s) for the past week. However, that is not a problem as, when I wake up to go to work, to see the HIGH TEMP & RAIN forecast so that I can dress appropriately is just a matter of looking at the numbers without worrying about the color (yellow backlight is very easy for reading the LCD data).
>> The viewing angle is rather limited. I put it up on a bookshelf next to the bed & cannot see the LCD data. Also, the A/C cord is short & you'll have to place it very close to an A/C outlet.
>> When powered in A/C mode, the backlight is always ON, VERY bright, & easy to see in the dark! LOVE THAT. However, there is no way to time a dimmer function, so you may be putting a bit of cloth over it when you sleep.
Just plug it in, pick your city, wait about 30 min (or less) & you're ready to go.
Hope this helps in your purchasing decision.

Atomic Clock feature works fine and the range and accuracy on the remote sensor seems fair enough -- there is often about a 1-2 degree difference between the sensor and main unit if set right next to each other, but this is minor for the uses we get out of it (a quick look at outside temps during the winter).
The only issue we ran into that was "problematic" was the Ice Alarm feature. This feature sets off the devices alarm anytime the temperature drops between 32 and 27 degrees or so to alert you to possible icy conditions. The problem is that in cold climates the temperature hovers in that range all winter long...so the alarm goes off continually every 40 seconds or so.
We just happened upon a solution that has worked perfectly. The ice alarm only works on Channel 1. So, if you set the outside sensor to Channel 2 or 3 the ice alarm is disabled and is no longer triggered. Obviously, they should have an ability to shut it off, but this is it...and even this isn't listed in the instructions.

HP DreamScreen 100 10.2-Inch Wireless Connected Screen Review

(More customer reviews)The HP DreamScreen is at its heart, a digital photo frame that's begging to be much more.
As with so many of 2009's consumer electronics, the DreamScreen is yet another example of a company trying to bolt on extended connectivity to popular sites. This time around, we have access to Facebook, Pandora, and Snapfish via built-in wired and wireless networking.
Setting up the DreamScreen is fairly painless. It quickly found and connected to my WPA2 network without any problems, and the built-in applications all ran as I had expected them to, albeit, very slowly. I thought that the slowness may be due to the product being so new, and immediately checked for a firmware update. Sure enough, there was one. However, it didn't seem to improve the response time.
The DreamScreen is quite large. Probably larger than what I'd want on my desk, and a bit too large for a normal end table. And while the back has slots to accept every type of flash media under the sun, it also makes the unit itself quite deep, making wall mounting an unattractive option.
As I had said previously, the included applications all work pretty much as I had expected them to. Facebook is a passive stream of status updates or photos. Snapfish can be pointed to someone's account, and Pandora seems to do the right thing if you already have a Pandora account with stations set up. The weather application updates quickly and often, and is visually appealing. The inherent problem with all of these, is that they aren't integrated or well executed.
So, mixing photos between any of the applications is just not possible without navigating between the different applications. On one hand, I can understand that the DreamScreen doesn't claim to do it, but if you're going to bundle multiple photo options, being able to see them all in a rotation seems like a natural function to me. And while Pandora works, the controls are not well thought out (e.g. making the music stop) and as you'd probably expect from a device like this, the audio quality is not very good.
Ultimately, you end up with a product that you'd normally "set and forget", but that really needs a lot of interaction to make any of the features work. I could see having this mounted somewhere that I could enjoy glancing at the pictures, and notice every once in a while that it's telling me what the weather's like, or that one of my friends has posted new pictures on Facebook. But in execution, I'd need to go find the remote, and navigate to each function. If I'm going to take the time to do that, why wouldn't I just grab my computer? (Or if I didn't have one, why wouldn't I spend about as much money on a netbook?)
The image quality is decent, but not nearly as good as what you'd see on the similarly sized Sony DPF-V900 9-Inch Digital Photo Frame (and a popular choice, now that I see it on another review). Again, it does what HP says it does, but it doesn't do it as well as it could, and seems almost an afterthought.
The DreamScreen really begs the question: "What need does this fulfill?"
If you're looking for a photo frame, you have better options from Sony, Kodak, and others.
If you're looking for an easy link to Facebook, the interface and one-way nature of the device puts a wet towel on that.
If you're looking for a portable media center, the audio quality is a serious barrier.
If you're looking for a "keep Grandma updated with something easy to use" device, you're hitting limitations with the interface (and wireless availability).
I just can't think of a single reason to buy this over another product, other than to say "Hey, check out this frame. Look at everything it can do."

Celestron 47005 Deluxe Compact Weather Station (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I was really looking forward to an accurate, easy to use weather forecast unit; unfortunately this Celestron unit is not it. It did not provide reliable outside information. The documentation said it would send from the outside unit to the receiver (inside unit) up to 100 feet. I had this positioned less than 20 feet from the transmitter (one window in the way). Sometimes we'd get the temp & humidity o/s, sometimes not. I replaced the batteries twice - the second time with newly purchased batteries that had a shelf life of 2016, obviously pretty newly stocked in the store. The backlight is awful; you can actually see the eight LED's that provide the backlight rather than a nice smooth backlight. There is no LCD contrast adjustment, which makes for poor reading. Last, but certainly not least, the outside unit & inside unit varied in both temperature & humidity when placed side by side. The outside unit read three degrees warmer & seven percent higher humidity. VERY, Very, very disappointed in this unit. Thank goodness Amazon offers free return shipping and backs their products.

(More customer reviews)I purchased one of these for my bedroom after having good luck with a 7-day unit that I keep in the main room of my house. This one didn't work right out of the box. It might get the time on the display, and part of the forecast - then it would reset, lose all data, and start over.
It's going to cost 1/4 of the price to send it back. I'm still debating...
Update:
I did send it back, and received another unit doing the same thing. Ambient tech support suggested that some 3-day units in the supply chains were "problematic." That one goes back as well.

It is not at all intuitive as to how to change settings, and if you hit the wrong button when an alarm goes off, it puts you into reset mode and you have to reset everything. Temp changed reading from F to C and will not go back to read in Farenheit, and it often has false readings on the outside sensor, showing sun or partial sun with 98% humidity and rain going off. Overall, I rate this honeywell product as a lemon and would send it back if I had not thrown away the mandatory packaging and original info that came with it. Maybe honeywell needs to go back to made in USA for quality, instead of following suit with everyone who is getting their products made in China.I would gladly pay more for something if it was user friendly and it worked! This thing is junk and I will be looking for a replacement.

Oregon Scientific WMR100N Professional Wireless Weather Station, Silver Review

(More customer reviews)Was in the market for a basic wireless WX station and after reading the many reviews for both WMR100 (1st gen) and WMR100N (2nd gen) here and elsewhere, I pulled the trigger. For a buck fiddie, I figured it was worth the gamble.
I like to keep my expectation bar low so based on the reviews squared with law of averages multiplied by Murphy's I figured the station would:
1. Show up in a week to 10 days
2. Have at least 2 dead sensors
3. Be extremely frustrating to set up
4. Not interface with Weather Display
5. Be impossible to remedy with OS customer service
Boy was I surprised. First the station shows up a mere day and a half after the cha-ching mouse click. I open it up and confirm all the parts and pieces are there and begin to install the batteries in the sensors per the very easy to follow 'Quick Start Guide'. Plug in the console and it's reading wind and rain. No joy on the temp/humidity though so I go through the steps of verifying good battery, reset buttons etc but still no joy. So OK, the temp/humidity sensor is DOA. But I'm batting .666 at this point so not really that bummed.
Plug in USB cable and switch Weather Display from my old Davis unit to the new OS WMR100N and boom, it's got it. That was easy.
Now it's time to verify data. I stick the anemometer out the window and console registers 34.9 MPH. Dang, way high I think. So I check a NOAA station a couple miles down my beach (same fetch - the Pacific ocean!) and sure enough it's 28-37. Ok, cool.
Test the rain gauge and it reports dead on.
So now to deal with the temp/humidity. I could care less about humidity but temp is important. I figure I'll just pony up for a new sensor given the customer support horror stories but decide to give them a call for giggles.
Call the 1-800 number listed in another review and after navigating the one menu option (Press 9) I get the ubiquitous 'All representatives are busy now...' Here we go I think and put the phone on speaker while I head off to do some laundry. Take one step and I hear, "Hi, my name is Michelle, how can I help you?" Another WOW, ok, I 'splain the problem and expect the usual did you do this? did you do that? rube goldberg reply but she asks a couple basic questions then promptly issues an RNA and says a new unit will be sent out as soon as I email her the receipt. Dang! That was too easy.
Alright, so we will see how long it takes to receive the replacement but so far, I'm impressed especially vis a vis all the negative feedback on this station. Interesting the previous gen (WMR100 not 'N') received much better reviews when the 'N' actually uses redesigned sensors to correct some of the first gen bugs. So that is not squaring. Nor is the 'customer service' complaints. Just saying.
Ok, on to the review. Instructions + manual were very easy to follow, well written and accurate. Console is very easy to use, mostly intuitive and smart looking. My clock didn't sync but then I'm prolly violating the no-interference rule by having my base station too close to other 'electrical appliances'.
Installed wind sensor this morning on my roof. Fit perfect on an old windsurfing mast. It's approximately 25' directly above the base unit sending / receiving fine. Ditto for the rain gauge.
Bottom line: SURPRISE. Surprised about the quality given cost is 1/4 a Davis station with similar features. Surprised customer service was so responsive and accommodating. Surprised the thing showed up 36 hours after I pulled the sale trigger. Surprised how easy it was to get operational. Surprised how easy it interfaced with Weather Display software. And surprised that for the most part, experience DID NOT conform to the average negative review.
That said, fingers crossed on sensor replacement I'll post an update when temp sensor arrives or if something anomalous occurs.

Another surprise > Just got a call from Michelle at OS with tracking number and ETA! New sensor should be hear early next week. Now THAT is customer service! BTW, station is online here:[...]

Replacement temp/humidity sensor arrived this morning as promised and works fine. Kudos OS for the excellent and expedited service.
Note: I found the base unit will not receive a signal if it is within close proximity (a few inches) of my laptops transformer. Similarly you could probably extrapolate to similar electron sinks.

This grid makes it impossible to read the display at night unless you are less than a foot away and directly at eye level. This was so irritating I returned the product back to Amazon. The alarm clock feature had no volume control. This was also very annoying. So sad since everything else was so perfect.

Philips AJ260 Weather Station Clock Radio Review

(More customer reviews)After reading all the other reviews I wasn't too sure. But reading between the lines I decided to take a chance. I bit the bullet and bought it and so far I am happy I did. I did find one thing I would like changed, one thing I would like enhanced.
The negative and needing changed is that the dual alarms will both sound by the same method. Either both by buzzer or both by radio. I personally like to use one alarm by radio, one by buzzer. That gives me a gentle wake up and then a reminder alert a little later.
To make the clock better, it would be nice if you could dim the weather LED. It is bright, no doubt about it. You can set it so that it only comes on for 10 seconds when you press a button, but I'd still like to see it dimmable.
As far as the other complaints... almost all the bad reviews could be corrected and attributed to user error. If people would RTFM before moaning, life would be easier.
Time resets to central but you live in the west, well read the manual. Not getting the auto time update, RTFM. Weather indicator light stays lit and keeps you up at night, read the manual. Outside temperature sensor giving inaccurate readings, read the flipping manual and mount the sensor in an appropriate place. As far as the sensor only measuring barometric pressure indoors and not outside, well unless you live in a submarine or a minute-man missile silo and use the airlock, the pressure inside and outside your house are the same. Humidity might be different, but pressure is the same, and that is what gives the clock its rudimentary weather predictions. Yes, it is really basic weather predictions, but what do you expect. It's a clock radio, not a meteorologist. Turn on the radio if you want more details.
I'd buy one again, but I would prefer separate buzz/radio selections for each alarm.

MIDLAND WR300 Weather Radio Review

(More customer reviews)After having tried just about every SAME technology weatheradio out there, I found the WR-300 to be one of the better ones, and definitely the best of the Midland weatheradios to date.
One of the best features it has is that it allows you to disable the audiable alerts for every watch/warning except life threatening ones like tornado warning, or biological hazard warning, etc. Other brands and models will only allow you to disable the most harmless events. I do not wish to be alerted at 3am because of a severe thunderstorm warning, or tornado watch. With the WR-300, I won't be alerted unless there is actually a tornado warning.
The blue LED backlit LCD display is pretty sharp looking, too! There is a menu feature that allows you to continuously keep the blue backlighting on, although I think it would be too bright in a bedroom at night, especially if the WR-300 is right next to the bed on a nightstand.
Some people have complained about the beeps for every keypress, and I did not find that to bother me. Maybe a softer "click" sound for every keypress would be better. Also, others have reported that their WR-300 leaked audio when the WX is muted. I did not have this problem at all; it worked fine for me.
Things I really liked about the WR-300:
1) Extensive audiable alert disable ability
2) Form factor and relatively small size
3) Blue backlit display
4) 4-AA battery backup (instead of 9v transistor batt)
5) Am/Fm/clock/alarm features
6) Menu flexibility (although not that intuitive)
I gave the WR-300 a 4 instead of 5 star rating because of the following minor issues:
1) No display of event(s) remaining time(s)
2) Menu navigation and master alert disable/enable operation was not intuitive.
3) No visual indication as to whether or not the master audible alert is enabled or disabled.
