(More customer reviews)I bought the Terk antenna in an attempt to pick up some AM and FM radio stations I was struggling with on my new bookshelf stereo system. Perhpas because of my apartment building, or the quality of the stereo, the antenna didn't offer me much success in picking up stations any better than the factory-provided antenna. I did notice improvement in the static (or lack of it) on stations that were already tuning in fairly well (they went from great to excellent), but the stations that were tuning in "poorly" got no better with the Terk antenna. Overall, it was probably not worth the money paid.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this for a 96 GMC Truck. All I wanted was something I could plug an iPod into so I could listen to music and some podcasts going to and from work. I have a radio / cassette head unit with a slave(separate) single cd player.
One mistake I made when hooking the whole thing up is that the interface istalls at the head unit not at the end of the cd wiring harness... once I got the order right, it worked great.
Be aware that you have to have a cd in the player and playing for this to work. Don't ask me why. Once you have it going, you just flip the switch and you are on the iPod input. I simply plugged in a 3.5mm/split RCA cable into the headphone jack and then into the aux inputs on the pac unit and voilla. Volume was lower than either the cd or the radio, but not a ton.
Overall I am very pleased with this. I had a $25 rewards coupon so the whole thing cost me less than $25. Way better sound and way less expensive than an FM modulator.
There are additional interfaces available that plug into this unit and allow on the go charging as well.

Griffin RocketFM / FM Transmitter for Mac and PC Computers Review

(More customer reviews)Works out of the box. It draws power from the USB port and definitely gives a stronger signal when connected to a powered USB hub than an unpowered one.
The included software is very easy to use on a Mac and lets you set the broadcast frequency in increments of 0.1 MHz, which is useful if you live in an area with lots of radio stations, as I do. However, the signal strength is pretty low, so you're relying on your receiver to achieve adequate discrimination between bands.
In my area, I had to go to an in-between frequency (.4MHz) from the regular stations to cut down on interference. My two big receivers (Sony & Panasonic) can handle this. My boombox picks it up, but gets lots of interference from the neighbouring stations. My portable radio doesn't get anything. I did appreciate the fact that the frequency is selectable anywhere in the standard FM range. Something like the Line X USB FM Transmitter with four selectable frequencies would not stand a chance in my crowded area.
Placement of the unit is very critical. Reception will vary widely when moving the transmitter around (and presumably the same for the receiver). If you have the patience to tweak it, it gives good to very good reception.
It is also very important to set the computer output volume to avoid distorting the sound.
Bottom line:
It's good enough to pipe iTunes to my receiver in the living room, but I probably won't take it traveling. Not bad for $30.
I might try to take it apart and either attach a bigger antenna or try to boost the signal. Alternatively, the C Crane FM transmitter would be an option that already has instructions for boosting the signal (but doesn't use USB).

A good friend of mine had purchased several Sansa's for his kids and highly recommended them. After owning the Sansa Fuse for several months it's the best $50.00 I've spent on MP3 players. It smokes the IPOD for the money. I like the IPOD ear-buds better but that's it (and I consider that to be very minor)! The Fuse I bought came with an extra 2GB card too.

The Tunecast transmits the music from your iPod to one of four selectable frequencies, which you can then listen to by simply tuning your home or car stereo to said frequency.
The most obvious advantage of this little device is the ability to use it anywhere there's a radio. Say you wanted to play your songs on your friend's stereo, or in your friend's car, or on a boombox at the beach: it's practically effortless with the Tunecast. And it's cheap, to boot.
Of course, what you gain in ease of use compared to, say, a direct line into your home or car stereo, you lose in sound quality. The sound is basically FM radio-quailty, with a noticible hiss in the background. Now, it's still more than listenable, and most of the time the music drowns out the hiss, but audiophiles in search of crystal-clear sound quality should look elsewhere (although they probably already know that).
Overall, I would recommend it simply because of its low price and versatility.

I was also getting 60 cycle hum in the transmitted audio from the provided, poorly filtered power supply(a standard plug-in supply like you'd get with most electronic devices).

Digital tuning PLL, non-volatile memories, ATS (auto scan and store stations), digital volume control, clock/sleep/alarm functions, mute function, backlighting when any button pressed for night time user. Another nice feature is the USB batteries recharge function that you can plug into a computer and/or a wall adapter (3 rechargeble AAA batteries provided). Easy to use and master all controls of the radio.
Sensitivity and selectivity are excellent due to the DSP chip, I have tried to auto scan stations on FM band, and this unit scanned all available stations including the weakest ones. AM DXing listening is good too, I can hear 860 AM from Toronto, Canada (broadcasting in French), 570 AM from New York, 670 AM from Chicago - which are 400-500 miles away from where I live. SW is ok, you can't expect too much on this little unit with a short 10" non-swivel antenna, but you can still get lots of strong stations.
The only draw back are the audio fidelity (it's not an iPod!) for music listening (even though FM stereo separation is good) and the digital noise at low volume.
If you interest in latest digital radio with DSP, Talk/news on FM/AM or travelling with a sleep/alarm features, this unit is the right one to get at an affordable price. With a ~$50.00 you might be able to get a Sangean DT-210/400W for music listening with DBB but without an alarm clock, a SW band, non-volatile memories and built-in auto recharge batteries. You decide.

Terk AF-9330 AM/FM Indoor Amplified Tower Antenna Review

(More customer reviews)I was hoping to improve reception on a few stations , so I decided to replace the twin lead dipole (passive) antenna that came with my new tuner with the Terk Tower. I have the AM Advantage loop and that works fairly well, so I figured this powered antenna would be a lot better.
Well, bad reasoning. On FM, it doesn't work NEARLY as well as a 32" piece of plain old wire on any of my radio recievers. In some cases, stations that could be tuned reasonably well with *nothing at all* attached to the FM inputs, and no internal antenna, could no longer be received with the Terk Tower attached.
Those that could be tuned with the antenna attached had grotesque distortion. This despite turning the gain adjustment dial in either direction. It was functioning, as at low levels of gain, the station dropped off completely, and definitely changed as you moved it. So it wasn't just broken. I could get barely acceptable reception on a few stations with micro-fine adjustments of the dial. But even at best all stations had all sorts of fuzz and dropouts. You could turn it up enough to swamp the receiver ACG circuit, but the distortion never goes away as you turn it down the point of losing lock completely.
On AM, it doesn't make it worse, but it doesn't help, either. On all the weak stations I have tried, I simply can't tell the difference in the results. Once again, fiddling with the gain control changes it, but at maximum boost, it's pretty much what I was getting with the the teeny little loop antenna that bolts to the back of the tuner. At lower gain settings you just can't hear the station at all.
For all intents and purposes, it just doesn't seem to work, I tried it on 4 different tuners/radios in 4 different places in my house, and in every case it made the FM reception MUCH worse than the stock antennas, and AM reception no better than the stock or internal antennas. I'm probably going to break it open and try attaching different lengths of wire in place of the stock antenna, and see if that helps. But I get the impression that the booster amplifer just isn't up to the task of passing 107.7 MHz., and introduces too much distortion at FM freqencies. It almost has to be - because a plain old wire that length is MUCH better.
Even though it was pretty inexpensive, I was very disappointed with this antenna. You'll get FAR better reception with a bent coat hanger. And that's free with your dry cleaning.
(addendum - I finally broke my antenna open, and now it's clear why it doesn't work on AM any better than a stock antenna. It's because inside the tower, for AM, is a small, unamplified, loop antenna! It's not even connected to the circuitry. Which begs the question of why turning the dial affects the AM performance. I speculate that the AM loop and the FM amplifier are interfering with each other - and that the AM is getting into the FM amp, causing modulation at the FM subcarrier frequency, hence, really fuzzy FM reception - and also dragging energy out of the AM loop more or less depending on the FM amp setting. BTW, the FM antenna is a piece of bare copper wire running the length of the antenna. Short answer is still the same - it's junk, don't waste your money)

(More customer reviews)This thing has a range of about a foot, with really poor quality sound. It may be as good or better than other transmitters that are available, but it's still pretty lousy. Not really as good as standard FM, probably halfway between AM and FM, and interrupted by the occasional static. I modified it as described in the websites that describe how to do such things, but the sound is so crappy, that it's hardly worth the price. The modified range is about 50 feet.
I realize that it solves a problem of allowing an MP3 player to work in your car, and there aren't any good alternatives, but but this isn't going to make anyone really happy. It's just a barely passable solution. It does what it's supposed to, and if you modify it, it has much better range, but it's really not a great result.
UPDATE: I really wanted a product like this, so I bought the "whole house transmitter" right on Amazon and it works. Near FM quality sound, decent range (about 40 feet). It only broadcasts on one of 6 channels, but at least the quality is acceptable if you can find an open one, and it punches through weak stations so the channel doesn't really have to be completely clear. It's 3X the price, but that seems to be what it takes to get decent quality sound.

Belkin F8Z498 Tunecast Auto Live FM Transmitter and Charger for iPod/iPhone Review

(More customer reviews)The Belkin Tunecast Auto Live is different from other FM Transmitters on the market because, through a special iPhone app, it can use GPS to determine the best frequency for you to use. After testing this transmitter with the app on my iPhone 3GS, I have the following opinions:
-You can only use the GPS function when the App is open, which means you can't run other apps when using the Belkin app. So if you're listening to Pandora when you suddenly need to change the frequency, you'll have to close Pandora in order to open the Belkin app. (EDIT: Apple's iOS 4 now allows for multi-tasking, so this particular point of mine is no longer valid, although you still have to go through the hassle of changing apps to change a frequency)
-The GPS function is useless. It kept telling me to use a particular frequency which did not work well. I could press the button on the iPhone app to cycle through frequencies, but the same useless frequencies would keep repeating.
-The Clearscan function (the button on the transmitter itself) is also useless, for pretty much the same reasons as above.
-Try to use the app to change the frequency of the Belkin transmitter while in rush-hour traffic. Yup, another driving distraction. (Memo to Belkin's lawyers: sooner or later, you'll need a warning in the manual along the lines of "do not use the app while driving")
-If I listened to Heavy Metal or loud Hip-Hop music, I might be ok with the sound quality from this transmitter. But since I listen to softer music, I find the constant background hissing and static to be very very annoying.
-I do LIKE the display though, the amber color is very pleasing and is easily visible both day and night. (hey, I'm trying hard to find some positives too!)
Overall, I don't recommend this transmitter. In fact, I've gone through many of the different transmitters from the different brands and the only one that worked perfectly and which I recommend is Griffin's iTrip. The reason is that the Griffins all have a hidden feature called "International" mode which allow the use of the 87.7 and 87.9 frequencies, as they are open frequencies in the United States (meaning there isn't a single U.S. radio station on those frequencies). But only the Griffins can use those frequencies, all other transmitters (including this very Belkin model) can go as low as 88.1 only. The Griffins also have a feature to boost transmitting power by setting the output to Mono, rather than the default Stereo which seems to produce a weaker signal. ETON S350 AM/FM Shortwave Radio Review

(More customer reviews)This radio is of excellent quality and the receive on AM, FM and shortwave is very good. Being a ham radio operator I really appreciate the rotary tuning knob that has a fine tuning adjustment knob built in. I just can't see myself buying an expensive shortwave radio with no tuning knob. Half the fun of radio is being able to play with a VFO!
I also own the GE superadio that other reviewers have commented on. The Grundig does not feel and look cheap like the GE superadio but the GE superadio will outperform the Grundig in a side by side comparison. The superadio has two speakers that are designed for better fidelity and louder audio than the smaller Grundigs single speaker can achieve. When listening to weak stations in heavy static on the AM band the superadio did a better job of pulling out the audio.
The shortwave reception is the best part of the radio however and this radio is a real jewel for shortwave use! The selectivity is great, no overlapping of stations that is found on cheaper shortwave radios like the Sangean SG 622. The radios sensitivity is excellent also, I could not ask for better performane from a shortwave radio. I know I made the correct decision passing up some of the more expensive Sony and Grundig shortwave radios that look so tempting to buy but lack a knob to tune with.

I found this GSI model to be the best one I have ever used. It can be set to a range of anywhere between 87.50 and 108MHz. It has an auto shut-off if there is no sound input. It can be plugged into the cigarette lighter which saves the batteries.Most of all, it has the best sound that I have ever gotten from an FM transmitter.

New Tecsun Radio Pl-380 DSP Fm Am Stereo World Band Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)Tecsun definitely has a winner with with the new DSP (Digital signal processing) third generation (see below) Tecsun PL-380 radio! I am extremely impressed right out of the box with how well it performs on its own attached whip telescopic antenna and its large internal ferrite rod antenna even for quite weak signals with both very good sensitivity as well as selectivity on ALL bands. The current price of about $45 on Amazon (including FREE shipping) is a fantastic value and should be a great bargain for many avid radio listeners.
PROS:
1) A double conversion, PLL (Phase-locked loop), fully digital portable radio that that comes with a USB cable for providing power or charging capability from a PC and a readable and quite useful English manual.
2) Excellent weak signal reception on ALL bands (LW/AM/FM/SW) using three separate band selector switches with LW and AM band selection toggled on the same switch. It really performs very well!
3) It has fm stereo available through earphones (supplied) that can be turned off for the reliable detection of weaker fm signals.
4) There is a separate switch that provides backlight control and that nicely illuminates the display as well as an alarm for wake-up/snooze,etc with either a buzzer or radio setting.
5) A dedicated set of wide/narrow bandwidth controls using a switch that toggles through a series of bandwidths from 1 to 6 KHz (with 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 KHz bandwidth settings).
6) Numerous tuning methods are available including a fine as well as a coarse tuning setting button for ALL bands and including an ATS (Automatic tuning and storage) storage system for 550 presets, direct keyboard frequency entry without hitting an "ENTER" key, up/down scanning keys, a fine and smooth, manual tuning knob, etc.
7) It also has a separate ETM tuning system (tuned with a dial and not a knob as on the PL-310 radio) for storing a set of weak signals while traveling to another location. The nice idea about this system is that the standard ATS presets are NOT modified at all and do not have to be reset when returning to your home location (but limited by a total maximum of 550 presets).
8) Very high quality and very readable display with many many icons for indicating battery life, wide/narrow bandwidth filter setting choice, fm stereo setting, etc. Clock time and station frequency are displayed simultaneously. The display also has a new and fully digital readout of both the signal strength and of the signal to noise ratio which are continuously updated at quite frequent intervals.
9) Good battery life is available using 3 rechargeable AA batteries (supplied) and the unit can be separately powered by the included USB cable as well.
10) Easy channel memory presetting and automatic preset recall of the 550 preset memory locations.
11) It also has a digital volume control with a side-mounted wheel with 30 available steps.
12) Finally, but not least of all, we note that this is Tecsun's third generation development of utilizing the recent DSP internal chip (from the USA). In this radio they have now developed a better system for reception of weak am signals that prevents the drop-out signal behavior that has been found by many to be more common on the Grundig G8 (Tecsun) clone and on the Tecsun PL-310 for example. As with all technical developments this is by necessity a compromise solution which will probably be further enhanced overall in the near future.
13) I personally actually prefer the Tecsun PL-310 overall as a useful lw/am/fm/sw radio, but the PL-380 does have some very nice enhanced features that are now incorporated as noted in 12) just above. There is also now an even newer Tecsun, the PL-360, a quite small, vertically oriented DSP receiver that also seems to be a fine quality radio product as well.

CONS:
1) Smallish speaker, but the sound quality is very good for its size.
2) There is no external antenna port on the PL-380 which is surprising since the internal ferrite rod antenna is shorter on this unit in comparison to the Tecsun PL-310 for example. It is also somewhat surprising since the Tecsun PL-380 is also slightly longer overall that the Tecsun PL-310. An clip-on external antenna is also provided with the unit however.
3) No synchronous detection circuit (for controling of fading due to interference) is available which is present on the SONY ICF-7600GR for example.

The 'snake arm' adjusts to fit the power outlet in my car, and there is a tilt ability for the actual holder. This fits my iPhone 3G with a thick case on. It can also adjust smaller than that for a regular iPod. The sound quality is near perfect - you just have to turn up the radio a little higher than normal. The FM transmitter adjusts to any FM channel.
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone. This isn't a name brand product, but I would consider it comparable to one. I've been looking to buy one for a little while now, and have seen them going for $70 and up. This is a steal at $22!
