(More customer reviews)When I first hooked this up to my iPod, it worked as expected...the first time. I used it for about 20 minutes. The second time, about 10 minutes into using it the FM transmitter seemed to stop transmitting. I made sure it was completely in the 12V outlet and all the connections were secure, and it was on the right FM frequency. Even without the iPod attached, there should be silence on the frequency on which it's transmitting, but it was just static. The charging part of it still works fine. The FM transmitter works off and on for apparently no reason. Even when it is transmitting, the cord that goes to the headphone jack is very spotty - you have to turn it around in the jack just right or you only get sound to one side of the car or there's a lot of static. My headphones work just fine, so it's not the jack on the iPod. When it's actually transmitting and everything is adjusted just right, it sounds great. I'd return it, but for $9 it's not even worth paying the return shipping. So, if you're looking for a charger, it works fine. If you're looking for an FM transmitter, I'd look elsewhere.

Griffin NA22041 iTrip Auto Pilot FM Transmitter with App Integration for iPod and iPhone Review

(More customer reviews)This review refers to the 4046-TRPAUTOC model # just released the end of May 2008. This particular model does, in fact, support the iPhone.
OK, let's start out with the good news. Finally there is an FM transmitter on the market that supports the iPhone without triggering the Airplane Mode prompt. It uses the dock connector and will output audio from the unit even with videos. This gets it an extra star.
That's it. That's the good news. Everything else about it is garbage.
Frequency range - This unit will not tune to any stations below 88.1. This leaves out prime territory on most American vehicles' radios below this point were no real U.S. radio stations broadcast.
SmartScan - Supposedly this will scan the radio signals in your area and find the 3 frequencies with the least interference from terrestrial radio. Put simply, it doesn't work. The device will find a new set of 3 stations every time I run the scan mode, sitting in the same place geographically. Nine out of ten times the supposedly radio-free frequencies it finds are actually full-blown radio stations, and they're pretty strong ones. It has yet to find a frequency that is weak enough for the built-in FM transmitter to overpower. This despite the fact that there are a few genuinely free frequencies in this area.
SmartSound - Supposed to improve sound quality. Seems to turn the volume up a hair (kind of like the old "loudness" setting on some CD players of a decade or two ago). Yay! Louder static!
Radio Data System (RDS) - Supposed to broadcast the track and artist name along side the music to radios equipped with such capabilities. Doesn't work. Generally sends gibberish even when the audio signal can get through.
FM Transmitter - The weakest part of the whole package. If this part worked, the rest would be forgivable. It doesn't. It can't even overpower dead/empty frequencies consistently. This is the weakest iPod-style FM transmitter I have ever used. This is unacceptable, and I'm not even sure how this got out of the development lab. You'd figure it should be able to do what it was designed to do, but I guess not.
Bear in mind, I live in a city of less than 100k and there aren't that many powerful stations in this area. I was hoping to be able to retire my old iPod and use my iPhone exclusively. Unfortunately, this unit is not capable of performing as advertised. This is the third piece of Griffin Technology that has failed. I will never invest in their brand again.
Update 6/15/08:
I've tried this unit a few more times after seeing several "B" level reviews, and after discovering an "Easter Egg" hidden feature of the transmitter. Though I wouldn't say this makes me want to give it any more stars (I'm sticking with 1/5), it may make some difference to someone. More importantly, it may help those of us who were foolish enough to purchase this unit.
You can make this unit tune to 87.9 FM to broadcast. This is a "hidden" feature (a.k.a. Easter Egg) of the device. If you go into the settings menu under "Mode" you have the option to do Stereo/Mono on the right and to enable/disable "SmartSound" on the left. In the middle there is simply the logo for "Griffin" displayed on the screen. Normally it's at the bottom of the screen (bottom center). If you press and hold the center button under it for about 10 seconds, it will jump to the top-center position. This will open the transmitter up to transmit on frequencies less than 88.1 FM.
Why is this important? Legally, radio stations in the U.S. are restricted from broadcasting lower than 88.1 or so (there are exceptions), so it's almost always a fairly open frequency anywhere you go in the U.S. (not necessarily true in other countries). Most car radios can tune that low as well (for use in other countries).
I found that using that trick, the unit seems to be in a stronger broadcast mode. I'm not sure if it is a power boost or if it's just due to less interference from terrestrial radio. Either way, it's a huge improvement over the out-of-the-box settings but still barely average for an FM transmitter in my early testing so far. The AutoScan still doesn't work (in a semi-rural area with only a few moderately strong radio signals). The RDS doesn't work consistently. Still a huge disappointment vs. my Kensington.

Pros:
- Good sound quality
- Sleek and attractive looking
- Pretty easy to use
- It will override a station with a slight signal, such as my 87.9 FM which in NYC has some interference on it when the ipod is not playing.
Cons:
- Signal distance is very short. This thing tops out at a distance of like 1-2 feet max. I ended up putting it on top of my radio where it worked fine.
- My biggest beef is that it will not fit into my ipod with the case (Capdase silicone) still on. If it fit in with the case on, I would probably give it 4 stars.

After using this device for about a month now, I am extremely pleased with its performance. The audio coming through my vehicle's radio using this device with my Ipod is outstanding, with no hiss or other interferences. 1)Sleek design that matches exactly the style of my ipod touch
What I didn't like about it:
1)Slips out of the ipod rather easily because it lacks the little clips on the sides that some of these connectors have--very annoying.
2)The shaft of this connector that goes into the ipod wasn't long enough to connect properly after I put a rubber case protector on it. Not really the fault of this unit, but the reality is that most people will probably have a similar experience given that you buy this to use with your ipod in the car.
3)Not all channels are available, so if you find a clear channel on your car radio, it might not be available on this unit.
4)Does not scan automatically to find the next clear channel like some of the more expensive models do, so trying to get to a clear channel between this and your car stereo is at least as involved as texting while you drive. I don't recommend doing either. It's a royal pain when you're driving and you start getting interference.
To sum up, I decided to use an old cassette tape converter / connector instead. It makes a little noise due to the plastic gears spinning which is not ideal, but I usually only hear it between songs when no music is playing. (Maybe by now they've improved these and you can get one that doesn't have moving parts that make noise). That said, much better sound quality and not losing your signal and having to adjust your radio station and the station on the FM Transmitter while driving make it a much better option in my opinion.

So I looked for the one with the best reviews and it was the one from GSI. It worked easily and flawlessly right out of the box. The sound quality is good especially for fm quality. It does sound a little heavy on the bass for some reason, but that can be adjusted through your stereo equalizer or your iPhone equalizer. The docking mount is sturdy and charges your iPhone while also functioning as an fm transmitter. And it was only $14 while qualifying for Amazon free shipping. I would highly recommend this product.

When I pressed the autoscan button, it would scan to stations that were already in use, or partially in use. It rarely scanned to empty stations. I used to have a Kensington digital FM transmitter, and when I tuned to my go-to station, it would work no problem, no static at all. When I tried that same station with the Belkin, I heard static non-stop, along with my music. The only time I heard no static was when I went through a tunnel (obviously, since there's no radio station to interfere). I'm going back to my Kensington - very disappointed with this Belkin model. Note: I live in Fairfield County, and used this on the way to NYC. Maybe it would work better in other areas, but around here, it was terrible.

Belkin TuneCast II FM Transmitter for MP3 Players (White) Review

(More customer reviews)This thing has a range of about a foot, with really poor quality sound. It may be as good or better than other transmitters that are available, but it's still pretty lousy. Not really as good as standard FM, probably halfway between AM and FM, and interrupted by the occasional static. I modified it as described in the websites that describe how to do such things, but the sound is so crappy, that it's hardly worth the price. The modified range is about 50 feet.
I realize that it solves a problem of allowing an MP3 player to work in your car, and there aren't any good alternatives, but but this isn't going to make anyone really happy. It's just a barely passable solution. It does what it's supposed to, and if you modify it, it has much better range, but it's really not a great result.
UPDATE: I really wanted a product like this, so I bought the "whole house transmitter" right on Amazon and it works. Near FM quality sound, decent range (about 40 feet). It only broadcasts on one of 6 channels, but at least the quality is acceptable if you can find an open one, and it punches through weak stations so the channel doesn't really have to be completely clear. It's 3X the price, but that seems to be what it takes to get decent quality sound.

-You can only use the GPS function when the App is open, which means you can't run other apps when using the Belkin app. So if you're listening to Pandora when you suddenly need to change the frequency, you'll have to close Pandora in order to open the Belkin app. (EDIT: Apple's iOS 4 now allows for multi-tasking, so this particular point of mine is no longer valid, although you still have to go through the hassle of changing apps to change a frequency)
-The GPS function is useless. It kept telling me to use a particular frequency which did not work well. I could press the button on the iPhone app to cycle through frequencies, but the same useless frequencies would keep repeating.
-The Clearscan function (the button on the transmitter itself) is also useless, for pretty much the same reasons as above.
-Try to use the app to change the frequency of the Belkin transmitter while in rush-hour traffic. Yup, another driving distraction. (Memo to Belkin's lawyers: sooner or later, you'll need a warning in the manual along the lines of "do not use the app while driving")
-If I listened to Heavy Metal or loud Hip-Hop music, I might be ok with the sound quality from this transmitter. But since I listen to softer music, I find the constant background hissing and static to be very very annoying.
-I do LIKE the display though, the amber color is very pleasing and is easily visible both day and night. (hey, I'm trying hard to find some positives too!)
Overall, I don't recommend this transmitter. In fact, I've gone through many of the different transmitters from the different brands and the only one that worked perfectly and which I recommend is Griffin's iTrip. The reason is that the Griffins all have a hidden feature called "International" mode which allow the use of the 87.7 and 87.9 frequencies, as they are open frequencies in the United States (meaning there isn't a single U.S. radio station on those frequencies). But only the Griffins can use those frequencies, all other transmitters (including this very Belkin model) can go as low as 88.1 only. The Griffins also have a feature to boost transmitting power by setting the output to Mono, rather than the default Stereo which seems to produce a weaker signal. What it doesn't say is that it that you will get a message stating that it will only work in AIRPLANE MODE. Click "NO" to NOT go into AIRPLANE mode and it wil work fine anyway.
Also, you can skip connecting the charging piece and only connect the sound/headphone output to the FM transmitter -- it works fine as well.

(More customer reviews)After using it twice, the scroll wheel no longer works, meaning I can't tune it manually, and rely on the InteliSense to find a station for me. Fine, except it's terrible. Two blocks after selecting a station, the radio starts overriding the signal again. The broken wheel also means I can't control any of the settings, whatever they may be. The only thing this is good for now is charging my iPhone in the car.
