I bought this clock four (this is important) months ago from a brick and mortar store (not Amazon, which is selling it for about $50 less. Darn.)
The design is very good, and the interface is intuitive. It comes with a nice remote control, which is handy, although some of the buttons could be better arranged. My only other design complaint is that the tuning/volume "slide wheels" are made from the same slick surface as the rest of the unit. This makes it harder to turn with your finger than it ought to be. But these are minor quibbles with an otherwise well designed product.
Here's my real complaint: after about two months, I wasn't able to play music from my iPhone through the iHome, which let's face it, is pretty much the reason I bought it. I already had a very nice Sony alarm clock thankyouverymuch.
I really thought the problem was my iPhone, and it took me a couple of weeks for met to get to the Apple store and have the Genius test it out. He ended up trying the phone out on an identical iHome in the store, and bingo, the phone worked fine, which means my iHome was the problem (Strike 1).
I called iHome customer service, that afternoon, and they were closed (Strike 2). Apparently their customer service people aren't interested in heard from customers in California past 4 PM eastern time. Then I emailed them, and received a prompt reply the next day (better!).
It turns out that iHome products only have a 90 day warranty! HELLO? 90 DAYS? I was 95 days in. Even though the unit clearly failed during the warranty period, I was outta luck. (Strike 3)
I was giving the option to have the unit repaired for a $30 fee, which shipping both ways at my expense. By then, I'm halfway to the cost of a whole new unit.The level of quality and warranty length are just unacceptable. I would not purchase this unit again, despite my happiness with the unit while it was working.

iHome iH6 Clock Radio for iPod (White) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this on a whim, since I've been waking up to my $5 alarm-radio recently. The build quality is excellent, and the ported chambers are good. Not anywhere like the bose wave radio, but pretty decent. I'd rate it lower than bookshelf speakers, about on par with mid-grade computer speakers, and above most clock radios.
The layout is good. It's a little funny to set the alarms; hold the "alarm 1" button, then turn the dial quickly or slowly till it's done, then press "Alarm On" to toggle alarm 1, alarm 2, alarm 1 & 2, off. Once you get used to it, everything is easy. The radio tuning is done by turning the dial, the "scan" is only on the remote. Remote works well from 10ft away.
However, on the front of the box it states "Works with all dockable iPods" with an asterisk. On the other side of the package, in tiny letters, it says "not compatible with 3G iPod". I really have a contention with the use of the word "All" when it doesn't mean "All". On picking this item up quickly, I saw the star but didn't think to check out the exception; I thought it referred to the "iPod not included" elsewhere on the package. I would never have expected "All dockable iPods" to mean the same as "All dockable iPods except the 3G dockable iPod". Other radios say "Compatible with 4G, 5g, Photo..." and so on. Much more clear. Incidentally, the iH5 (earlier version) is 3G friendly, and I'll probably be picking that up soon.
Another note: the "2 alarms" isn't as nice as I thought; 1 alarm is beeper or ipod, the 2nd is radio. I wanted 2 ipod alarms, or 2 any alarms. It puzzles me why they decided to limit each alarm. So essentially, this is a 1 1/2 alarm ipod alarm clock for me.
Overall, good design, good build, recommended product unless you have a 3G.

iHome iH5 Clock Radio and Speaker System for iPod (White) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been long needing a new alarm clock/radio for my bedroom now and luck has it that SDI Tech just put out on the market something that I was looking for. The iHome is essentially an alarm clock radio with a docking station for the iPod. The unit is no bigger than a regular clock radio, measuring 9.2 in [234mm] width, 2.7in [69mm] height and 5.5in [141mm] depth so it can comfortably fit even on a small nightstand. Packaging contains the unit itself, instructions manual, removable docking station to fit the different kinds of iPods, back-up batteries for when power goes out [we all hate to see the flashing 12:00 when this happens], power adapter and an external radio antenna. No remote control though! You have to purchase it separately and it comes free if you buy one of their hard iPod cases for around $40 if I remember right. A smart marketing move, but deplorable. Just include the remote!
Sound quality is what to be expected of speakers of that size. SDI claims to be using an innovative "tunnel sound" system called Reason8 [resonate, how cool :/]. They're pretty loud at full blast but I was hoping they would offer a deeper, stronger sounding bass. I have a similar sized pair of computer desktop speakers that came with one of my old Hewlett Packard computers that offer better sounding bass. For those that don't listen to a lot of techno, I suppose it's no biggie. Reason8 does sound better than most other competitors out there tough, but doesn't quite touch Bose or Altec Lansing.
The iHome has some very cool features. Even without a docked iPod it can still offer quite good functionality: alarm clock, radio. On the back of the unit there is aline in on the back so you can connect pretty much any audio device and listen through the speakers. The Snooze button also adjusts the display brightness, offering 3 different settings. Also found on the back of the unit there is a small button for daylight savings time, sleep volume adjustment and clock set-up.
Dock an iPod and things get interesting. While charging it, you can listen to music directly through it, you can set it so it automatically shuts off at intervals ranging from 120 minutes to 60 to 30 to 15. As the timer approaches zero, volume slowly and subtly turns itself down.
You can set it so when it's time to wake up, you will be awaken to the sound of music coming from your little mp3 player.
Gripes:
Remote control not included. What gives? Smart marketing move, as I've mentioned above, but it would have been nice to have it included, given the unit's price.
Even on the lowest brightness setting I still find the unit too bright for my taste. The blue hue lights up my whole room. I sent an e-mail to SDI tech support inquiring about ways to make it dimmer, no response yet. If this is to be an alarm clock radio, why didn't they offer more than just 3 brightness settings? If nothing else, I think I'll find some translucent duct tape and put it over the front display, trying my best to make it blend with the design.
Buttons on the top have a different color than the front display. The front is a warm blue, the buttons are orange. I personally think from a design standpoint the unit would have looked more ballanced if it was in a single color.
Speaking of buttons, they seem rigid to the touch, giving off a loud click when pressed. The round turn buttons for volume and settings are a bit tricky to use. It may be just my unit but I found both to be sometimes unresponsive and when they finally do work, they are too touchy. I think it would have been a very nice feature if, for the price claimed on such a unit, the buttons would have been replaced with tactile wheels, just like the iPod.
Radio antenna cable has a plug that's actually in the middle of the cable itself. It would have been nice if the thing actually plugged in the very back of the unit, so if it wasn't needed [like in my case], one wouldn't have to worry about ducking away 3 inches of useless tangle.
Another nice feature would be the ability to select exactly what song on the iPod to wake up to. Presently, the thing just picks up where it left off playing the night before.
My Samsung cellphone is at fault for the following gripe, having spoiled me rotten. My phone has 3 settings for alarms: daily, Monday through Friday or Saturday and Sunday. Would be nice if the iHome had a similar feature, so if you go to bed late on a Friday and forget to turn off the alarm, you won't be awaken Saturday morning.
Final Thoughts:
I purchased this unit primarily because I wanted a system that allowed me to listen to my tunes as I read a book before going to sleep. I also needed a new, functional alarm clock. The SDI iHome paired these two needs into one nice option. I had $100 worth of gift certificates at Best Buy so I figured why not. If it wasn't for my abovementioned "overdue" needs, I probably would have waited. Wait and see what the competition comes out with. Wait for the price to go down a bit because as it stands right now, it's a bit high. If you end up purchasing it, rest assured that it's a nice gadget that will surely serve you well. Nice features, good sound quality, best suited to be used in a bedroom.

(More customer reviews)I bought this for my wife and haven't played with it too much but will pass on her comments. The unit is small and easy to use. Overall pleased with only two comments.
The volume is incremental and only adjusts from the unit itself and ignores any changes made on the iPod. The problem with this is that if you want to fall asleep to some 'gentle and soothing' sounds/music the difference between no sound and the first step is too pronounced.
The only other item to note is that the dimmer also has steps and if you like your room very dark at night the lowest setting visible is just a bit too bright. However, you can completely turn the light off which is nice and all you have to do is hit a button to turn it on -- then step thru all the settings to turn it off...but that's not too bad.

(More customer reviews)I bought this alarm clock for it's ease of operation and dimmer for the clock, I like almost everything about it except for one not so small thing...the alarm volume. It is NOT adjustable (at least as far as I can tell). It starts out at 20% of max volume for about 30 seconds, then goes to 70% max volume and stays that way! I'm going to try and contact the company to see if there's any way this can be fixed. I like to lay in bed and listen to music for a little while before I get up for the day, but NOT at 70% volume...if not for this "flaw" I would have given it 5 stars.

iDesign Cube Clock Radio for iPod Review

(More customer reviews)I'm legally, though not totally, blind. Consequently, I tend to look for products that really stand out visually. Though this display generates from behind a screen, it's the easiest to see, find or focus on that I've ever seen. I think that the screen may also serve to "soften" what might otherwise be a rather harsh LED glow.
The sound from this device is suprisingly deep and rich and, though I hate to say it, surpasses that of my walnut encased VERS dock. I really was taken aback by the range this little cube could generate.
On the down side, if you don't like using printed instructions or prefer to simply dive into setup as I do, this is not an intuitively designed product. While navigating music and volume are straightforward (though I really would have liked a remote with this device) setting time and alarm are not. DON'T LOSE THE INSTRUCTIONS.
Is it worth the $99 price tag? Well, I'd like to say no, but I've purchased two; one for myeself and one for a friend as a housewarming gift. I really do like it and know that my friend does, as well. I'd like to see a lower price, particularly with no remote, but it's afine product, and you know that adage about a product being worth what people are willing to pay for it.

Here's the problem. If you have an ipod in the unit you cannot wake up to the buzzer, only the ipod. If you go to sleep with the ipod on, playing some mellow music at low volume, this is what you will hear for your morning alarm. It's not going to wake you. You cannot use the buzzer for an alarm unless you take the ipod out. What's the point of having it?
Mine is going back.

(More customer reviews)I have a couple minor complaints with the iHome IH9, let's get those out of the way. First complaint: the AM reception, even with the external antenna isn't great. With the antenna it is "OK" but without the antenna it is non-existent. My previous inexpensive AM/FM clock radio (with digital tuner) did a much better job with AM. Second complaint: I wish the volume wheel & adjustment wheel (top left, top right) were "grippy-er". Laying in bed they are kind of hard to turn. Finally, with the iPod sitting above the clock it seems a touch funky and fragile, but I think it is probably fine - almost all the iPod clocks have this EXACT same design, so, I am just paranoid.
Now, for the things I like. The sound is really good. I don't think it is an "auto-set" clock, but it came from the factory already set. Keeps good time (so far). Readout is super easy to read. There are 7 brightness settings to the display, including OFF, and it fast and easy to switch between them. The fall asleep to (radio/ipod/line-in) is great, the dual alarms to (buzzer/radio/ipod/ipod-playlist/line-in) is great. The fact that either alarm can be 7-day, 5-day (weekday), or 2-day (weekend) is fantastic. The remove is somewhat useful, I guess - haven't used it much.
It is a touch pricey, I paid $90 - but I really love the features and sound. No plans to return it.

(More customer reviews)This is a fun little device - the perfect size with plenty of features. It fits on my nightstand in place of your typical alarm clock, not taking up any extra room. It easily packs up to go on the road with you. It has custom adapters included for every size of docking iPod, as well as a connector for non-docking iPods. Great sound, great control of sleep vs. wake volumes, and a nice dimming feature with 4 settings to it, so that the light of the clock doesn't keep you awake. And if you forget to dock your iPod, the buzzer alarm will still sound (actually it's a beeping alarm).
If you are a heavy sleeper, or like 90 minutes of sleep music in addition to your wake music, I recommend putting your iPod on shuffle all songs before docking it on this station so that you won't get to the end of your playlist and run out of music.
I only have two complaints about the iHome 2 Go travel alarm clock. One is that my clock seems to gain a few minutes every day, so it ends up being very fast. I reset the time once a week. The other is that I have to remove my iSkin to dock my iPod. I was sure when I bought the skin that it said I wouldn't have to remove it to dock the iPod, but because of how the docking works on this station, I do.

It will still charge the iPod, but it won't play the iPod, the clock, radio, alarm, etc. all don't work. Tried the company's "trouble shooting" method of unplugging and removing batteries, and when I plug it back in, the screen flickers to life, then dies. Amazon should really stop carrying this product - complete crap. I expect better from you Amazon...

The information in the ad stated that it was compatible with all IPODS. When we put the Ipod on the clock radio it says the it does not charge this Ipod! That was very frustrating. I called the manufacturer and they told me it doesn't charge the 5th generation Ipod!

I have A 4TH GENERATION NANO- and yes there is an adapter for it. We listen to it everyday. IT CHARGES YOUR IPOD WHILE DOCKED. The sound is great. The color change is cool. I wanted something small that sounded great. I use it in every room of the house, especially the kitchen while I am preparing meals. The sound is great for such a small cube. I would recommend this to anyone of any age. In a day where most things don't do what they say in the advertisement, finally something that exceeds those promises. You won't go wrong with this one.

iHome iH16 Portable Speaker System for iPod (Gray) Review

1. Alarm clock must work with iPod so I could set what song I woke up to
2. Clock must have bearable alarm sound just in case iPod is not available.
3. Clock must increase sound from silence incrementally so I'm not jarred out of sleep.
4. Clock must be small and portable so I can pick it up and walk with it while I get ready in the AM w/o waking hubby
5. Clock must work on batteries and wall plug that detaches
6. Clock must be white or silver
And with that said, this clock was so perfect it's like I imagined it! Not only that it's an travel clock so it's portable enough for trips. It does not have all the wiz bang of some of the other clocks but I really didn't need all of that. The unit is much smaller than it looks on the site and the speakers pack a serious punch (they are on the sides). I would buy this again and I've been recommending it to all my friends. Perfect!

Ottavo OT1010 Speaker Docking Station with Alarm Clock for All Generation iPods and iPod Touch - White Review

(More customer reviews)I researched iPod Docking Stations/Alarm Clocks for a couple of days. I narrowed it down between the iHome and this Ottavo brand. Both were roughly in the same price range $30-$50. The criteria/features that I was looking for were
1.) iPod Touch Docking/Charging Station compatible with the iPhone is a plug
2.) Dual alarm clock allows you to wake to either radio, iPod or beeping
3.) Speakers to play iPod or radio
4.) AUX input so that I can connect with my computer even better
5.) Ease of Use.
Here is what I found when I opened the box:
1.) When I received the Ottavo OT1010, the box stated that it was only compatible with iPod. iPod Touch. I contacted Ottavo before taking it out of the box to find out if the listing was incorrect and to find out it if would harm my iPhone 4. It took a little while, but they did contact me back and said that it would not harm the iPhone 4. All in all, not only my iTouch buy my iPhone DOES work on this Ottavo. The connector is very snug, but it works beautifully and it charges my iTouch/iPhone very well.
2.) This docking station has 2 alarm clock settings. You can set them for separate times and you can turn them both on or one or the other. The alarm clock feature works very well and will wake you to either your iPod, FM clock radio and beeps that start off quietly as to not jolt you out of bed and then increases in loudness until a certain volumn which feels comforatble to me. This is a very nice feature.
3.) The speakers surprisingly sound very good for an alarm clock. I wouldn't use it if I was throwing a party but it is very clear and has a good range in volume. The radio is digital, easy to tune, clear and has 20 presets!!
4.) The unit is a nice size, has a nice clean look to it and seems sturdy and nicely built. The unit also comes in other colors as well. The display, however, is bright buy can be adjusted. The lowest setting is more than sufficient. If you like your room to be completely dark than you would want to turn the display off at night.
5.) The docking station has quick start instructions and I found it easy to set up. I can set mostly without seeing the manual
Overall, I give the Ottavo iPod Docking station/Alarm Clock 5 out of 5 stars for the reasons stated above. iHome is a famous brand name but I would recommend this item to a friend next time, and I would recommend Ottavo docking stations.
