Delphi Boom Box Audio System for SkyFi/SkyFi2/RoadyXT Review

Delphi Boom Box Audio System for SkyFi/SkyFi2/RoadyXT
Average Reviews:

I was somewhat apprehensive ordering this considering some of the bad reviews the SA10001 had. This unit must be its successor. Worked great right out of the box. Even though I live in a rural area I had no problem picking up a good signal. Sound quality is good and the bass/treble controls (selected on XM receiver and not on boombox) seem to have good range. Only problem I have with the unit is no where to store the power adapter. So far happy with the purchase and a good way to utilize my SkyFi 2 as a portable unit.

ETON YB300PE AM/FM Shortwave Radio Review

ETON YB300PE AM/FM Shortwave Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I might have only given this radio three stars, but I think it gets a fourth for the performance it delievers at it price level.
AM and FM reception are quite good for a little radio like this. Shortwave reception is mixed. On one hand, you can pick up many stations, not just the big high-powered broadcasters that you get on low priced radios (BBC, CBC, etc.). On the other hand, they come with a lot of noise and fading distortion, and you get nothing but a local/DX switch to try to improve the situation. There's no ability to micro-tune, switchable audio or bandwidth filters, etc. I therefore feel that this is definintely an above-average radio on SW for its price, but that enthusiasts should spend more money and get something that will make distant or weak stations more pleasant to listen to. (Then again, I have come to believe that internet broadcasting is going to render SW obsolete in the U.S. and similarly developed countries, so maybe a mega-buck radio is just an unncessary expense.)
Sound quality through the internal speaker is poor. I assume this is because Grundig made a design decision to minimize battery consumption, size and weight, but that comes at the expense of a decent audio section. The sound is adequate for desktop or bedside listening of voice broadcasts. But music is tinny and the radio doesn't have enough juice to play across a mid-sized domestic room without distorting. Headphone listening is significantly better. If you think of it more as a walkman-type radio with a courtesy speaker for when the phones are inconvenient, you'll probably be pretty satisfied.
The radio is pretty easy to operate, looks good, and doesn't feel cheap. The sleep timer is a nice convenience. There are a couple things that bugged me though. One is that you have to shift between high and low shortwave bands, and cycle through FM and AM to get from SW2 down to SW1. Annoying and anachronistic. The second is that you lose your presets and clock time when your batteries go dead. I wouldn't have minded some more presets either, since I like to set favorite short-wave braodcasters on several of their frequencies to pick the clearest signal at any given time.
The radio is a good value, especially when it is discounted. With the "PE" version, not only do you get an above-average radio for the money, you get the ac adaptor, headphones, wire antenna, cheesy case, and a booklet, too. Some of their competitors make you buy this stuff separately for a good $20 or so.
Finally, a word of warning. There is some older stock of this radio floating around that appears identical to current production but has less frequency coverage than the current model (and may lack some other electronic impovements too). I actually got stuck with one of the older ones.

If you love to hear broadcasts from around the world, here's a tool that makes it fun and easy. The Grundig Yacht Boy 300PE features precise AM, FM, and shortwave tuning via a digital PLL system. Plus, because it weighs in at 13 ounces and measures less than six inches across, this radio is easy to take along wherever your travels take you.
Design and Controls The 300PE's integrated speaker offers pleasing sound while a built-in antenna on the top of the device handles FM and shortwave reception. The front of the unit features a large LCD display that shows frequency, time, sleep time, and symbols for the sleep timer and alarm activation. The display can be temporarily illuminated for night viewing. A keypad below the screen allows illustrious shortwave listeners to directly enter their shortwave band of choice, giving instant access to known broadcasts. Other controls on the front panel include band selection, clock settings, push-button up/down tuning, and scanning. Meanwhile, the back of the radio sports a flip-out tilt stand.
Tuning and Bands With support for AM (520-1710 kHz) and FM-stereo (via the headphone jack) plus shortwave from 2.3-7.8 and 9.1-26.1 MHz, the 300PE's digital tuner offers exceptional tuning accuracy. AM band tuning is in 9 or 10 kHz steps, which is selectable via a switch inside the battery compartment, while shortwave tuning is in 5 kHz steps. A DX/local switch lets you switch between short and long range AM broadcasts. In addition to the direct frequency entry method, rapid tuning is possible with the quick station scanning function. You can also store up to 24 memories so you can access your favorite stations with ease.
Connections and Power The 300PE operates on three "AA" batteries, or via AC power. A 3.5 millimeter headset jack is provided, as is an external antenna jack for enhancing shortwave and FM reception.
Extras The radio's built-in 24 hour clock features an adjustable sleep timer that turns the radio off after a set interval. In addition to an AC adapter, the radio ships with a handsome vinyl carrying case, batteries, a pair of stereo earphones, and an external wire antenna.
What's in the Box YB300PE radio, 3 AA batteries, AC adapter, portable wire antenna, stereo earphones, carrying pouch, carrying strap, and owner's manual.

NFL Chicago Bears Dual Alarm Clock Radio/Ipod Dock Review

NFL Chicago Bears Dual Alarm Clock Radio/Ipod Dock
Average Reviews:

This product seems to have it all, combining an iPod dock, alarm clock and your favorite NFL team in a stylish package. Too bad the quality is poor and the item just doesn't deliver. The dock speakers emitted static and an audible hiss at all but the highest volume levels. The manufacturer failed to respond to support inquiries so the item is being returned.

Sirius SL-EX1 Stiletto Executive Speaker System Review

Sirius SL-EX1 Stiletto Executive Speaker System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have owned this unit for about 3 months now. Very happy with it. It's a nice looking unit and the sound is decent. Couldn't give it 5 stars and here's why: I took it to an outside party, and didn't bring the external antenna that's included with the unit. I thought, "The Stiletto has an antenna built in and since I will be outdoors it shouldn't be a problem." Wrong. You MUST hook up the external antenna. I wish the unit had the capability of detecting that no external antenna is connected, and in that case, switching to the antenna that's integrated with the Stiletto. Not a big deal though, the lack of that feature would not have kept me from purchasing it.

CableJive dockStubz Charge Converter and 30-pin Pass Through Adapter for iPhone, iPod, and iPad Review

CableJive dockStubz Charge Converter and 30-pin Pass Through Adapter for iPhone, iPod, and iPad
Average Reviews:

The Dock Stubz converter works just as it said it would. It allows my iPhone 4 to dock to any device without the necessity to remove my OtterBox Defender series case. It was a little difficult finding this handy little device, but I'm glad I did. I could not find a docking station radio labeled iPhone 4 compatible that would work with the case on. I even considered giving up my defender series case and using the very thin silicone cases that are popular and still, the iPhone 4 would not fit in any of the radio docking devices, it was just too wide to get a proper connection. The Dock Stubz eliminated that problem right out of the box.

Pioneer VSX-1020-K 7.1 Home Theater Receiver Review

Pioneer VSX-1020-K 7.1 Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tend to do a lot of research before making large purchasing decisions and so far this receiver is receiving a pretty rosy reception! Its predecessor, the 1019, was CNET's and Gizmodo's top mid-range receiver. Both reviewers had just as high hopes for the 1020, and Gizmodo already called it the best receiver $550 can buy, saying the 1020 "hit the sweet spot" that gave the most bang for buyer's buck.
The critics I read all raved about the excellent sound quality, but the 1020 brings some new offerings to the table for a mid-range receiver.
In short, the most valuable features you get with this model that you don't get with the next step down are:
1. A fifth HDMI port in back, an extra sixth in front (for digital cameras, computers, etc.).
2. Analog video upscaling (which I don't care too much about since most of my content is HD already or played through an upscaling player).
3. The iContolAV iPhone app. Very cool for controlling volume and switching inputs. Works simply by having your receiver connected to ethernet and your iPhone connected to the network via WiFi. A few times the app has had trouble properly connecting, but it usually works well.
4. Internet radio with programmable stations, which is cool, though you can't currently control the station selections from the iPhone App, unfortunately.
5. A color configuration interface output to your TV via the HDMI output. I can't imagine trying to configure all my speakers without seeing a graphical representation of their location on screen.
That last feature feature, the HDMI 1.4 ports that support 3D, the 7.1 surround capabilities, excellent sound quality and the iPhone App are what made the VSX-1020 the clear choice for me. I also appreciated the automatic calibration with the included microphone and the included iPod cable/compatibility, but those weren't as strong of selling points.
The only negatives of note for me is that the little front port cover is a little cheap. It's not even a door, simply a little plastic piece that pops out if you push one side. I, like others, have also experienced the issue where the receiver switches to TV/Sat when first turned on, but I've yet to determine whether that's a problem with the receiver itself or my Harmony universal remote (I'll update the review as I get more information).
One last tip to buyers, however. If you're considering listening to your phone's music over Bluetooth by buying the $99 AS-BT100 adapter, I'd consider buying a $99 Apple Airport Express instead (assuming your music is managed through iTunes). It lets you stream music from your computer to the receiver over WiFi and control what's playing via iTunes or Apple's robust "Remote" iPhone app, but more importantly the Airport Express acts as a USB print server and a one port wireless bridge (something that lets you connect wired devices to a wireless network).
That wireless bridge capability is especially valuable, since you'll need it or something similar for internet radio and iControlAV iPhone app support if your VSX-1020 receiver isn't close to your wireless router (mine isn't). Buying the Airport Express kills two birds with one stone.
UPDATE:
A few ideas have been thrown out by other Amazon posters to help alleviate the issue with the receiver switching to TV/Sat when it first turns on. The first idea is to change the receiver's settings thusly:
"1 Press Receiver , then press Home Menu.
2 Select `System Setup', then press ENTER.
3 Select `Other Setup', then press ENTER.
4 Select `HDMI Setup', then press ENTER.
5. Set Control to 'Off'."
The second idea is to adjust your TV settings like so.
"Go into Menu under HDMI-CEC and turn it Off. If the set is a Samsung look for AnyNet+ (default is normally On) and turn it Off."
I'm still having issues going directly to a given HDMI input when the unit first power on (going to "HDMI Input 1" simply toggles the current HDMI input instead of going directly to the one you want), but I've made the quirk tolerable by programming one of the buttons on my universal remote to toggle inputs, so it's easy to fix.

Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver Review

Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This receiver replaced a Sony STR 397 that had a continuous static problem that was never fixed. I gave up on the Sony and bought the Onkyo. I use it to power two Polk tower speakers hooked up to my HDTV and DVD player.
The receiver is basic, no frills. Bass, treble and balance controls are on the front panel. There is no loudness control. There are multiple memory settings for music stations. All the standard connections are in the back including an input for an iPod (docking station extra). The tuner works well and has standard scanning for stations.
The receiver is rated at 50W per channel. It is plenty adequate for the Polks. The sound is clear and unvarnished. It produces a crisper, cleaner sound than the Sony.
For sound reproduction without lots of frills and buttons, this has proved an excellent choice. I am very pleased with the item.
Once again, I have to complement Amazon for having excellent pricing and incredible free shipping that is fast.
