The megabass option fills in the low frequencies and makes the sound more natural (however, if you're looking for a bass monster, this isn't it). FM performance is decent and there is a fully retractible antenna that can be hidden away in the body of the unit. The FM tuner presets can be set by an easy automatic scan, or you can set specific stations manually. The unit is approx. 20"W x 10"D x 6"H, due mostly to the twin passive radiators which provide the bass frequencies. This unit will spend most of its time in the bedroom on a dresser but it is highly portable with an integrated carrying handle. CD performance is excellent, with fast spin-up/spin-down times and quick seek and fast-forward functions. The overall design is clean and futuristic - definitely not your average box - and overall build quality seems first-rate. I am 100% pleased with this purchase!

(More customer reviews)I already have a quality 800 watt, 7.1 surround sound system via digital optical cable directly from my Macintosh computer, which produces GREAT powerful sound. So I've learned one really can't combine a whole lot of quality, power and portability in one easy to use stereo.
The iPod doesn't have the ability to transfer good sound to begin with, one can add better speakers and all, but that only goes so far.
What I needed was something to take and play in different locations without headphones, the design and price of this iLive stereo attracted me, as well as a lot of features and power input options.
The sound quality of this iLive unit is ok, much like a pair of iPod headphones is ok.
My opinion of decent sound would be something like a Bose Wave Radio or a iPod HiFi, but these items cost over 3x the amount of this iLive stereo and not suitable or lack a lot of features, power input options etc.
The iLive is priced very reasonable and makes a great general purpose iPod player, it's certainly attractive in black, which makes the black iPod w/video sort of blend right in with it like a perfect match. There is a tiny bit of background noise coming from somewhere and the bass isn't as deep as I would like (spoiled on my 200 watt sub woofer I guess), but hey it's only $79 and can play cd's, radio and iPods and charge them up too.
There is a few things I've found lacking, a handle for instance. But the strap could be made shorter. There doesn't seem to be a way to lock a iPod into place so it doesn't accidentally pop out, perhaps a piece of velcro in the right location will do the job. There is no cover either, but I guess one can be modified to protect the iPod from scratches and dirt, paint, wind blown sand and other nasties.
Overall I'm very pleased with this unit, I know it's not a kick [...] system like my expensive home stereo, but it will allow me to watch movies, TV shows (with video iPod), listen to music etc. with complete portability if the power goes out or at the gym or at the beach or campsite etc. without paying a lot.
In places like college dorms and such where thieves abound, this makes a great unit because the expensive iPod part can be taken out and the cheaper bulkier part left behind.

(More customer reviews)I purchased one of these thinking it would be a great gift for my niece. She loves listening to music while she is playing. I wanted something portable, around US$60-$80 and adequate sound quality. I believed I had found it in this product.
Once I got it I immediately tried it out and found that although the radio had good reception and the remote control was better than expected, this unit could not read ANY CD I attempted. It would try to read and respond with NO DISK. I was a bit angry, but not willing to give up just yet. I returned the item to get an identical one.
My second one had the exact same issue! Sony used to be a great consumer electronics company, but their current manufacturing only produces junk like this boombox.
I have a two Sony TVs, both great. Two Sony DVD players, both exceptional (however the most recent purchase died after 60 days, but the Sony replacement has worked great in the last 18 months), and another Sony boombox (which was junk, that is why I was going to purchase this item). I have witnessed a slow but sure downward spiral of quality in items produced for Sony. I believe this is my final Sony product.
Now I have to find a similiar item here in Amazon.com that I will purchase. Thanks in advance for your reviews that you may post, I use them to guide many of my purchases!

(More customer reviews)It's not a bad package all in all -- lightweight, runs off C batteries or an AC power adapter, charges your iPod when docked, and has dock adapters for all but the newest iPod nano models. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the box also included a 1/8" phone plug cable for connecting non-iPod devices and a 12V car power adapter.
My iPod mini and 5G iPod fit snugly into the dock, and the secure fit makes it much easier to use the click wheel than on competing products where the iPod can wobble a bit.
The sound quality is merely adequate and bass is nonexistent. You just can't expect very much from such a small unit. So much for the "Rich full sound" promised by the advertising copy.
I'm rating it only 2 stars because it's not worth the MSRP. I was able to pick one up for a good deal less than list price because of a sale at the local electronics superstore, but with the normal pricing it just doesn't offer a whole lot for the money.

Sirius S50-EX1 S50 Executive System Review

(More customer reviews)Having owned my S50 portable unit since December 2005, I have waited a long time until the S50 Executive Systems arrived at my local electronics store. They had just put them out on display and I was the first to buy one yesterday - not that I've been hanging out at the electronics store waiting this entire time.
I was so starved for the unit, I bought one without hesitation. I didn't even look at the $218.89 price sticker, or give price a second thought.
Today, I got the unit setup at the office and it looks great - very executive. The design and look is as elegant as the portable unit, but that is where the buck stops.
The sound is uninspiring and I was surprised to discover that there is no tone control for the device. You are stuck with the flat output of the speakers.
The volume dial is unresponsive and frustrating. You have to dial it a full rotation to get the sound to go up or down. To turn the volume up to an enjoyable level, I have to rotate the dial 3-4 full turns to the right. When someone comes into my office, or the phone rings, I have to turn the dial back the same amount. It is the only volume dial that I've experienced that requires you to do so much work to hear your music.
I had some difficulty getting a good signal from the Satellite, but it wasn't bad and it works great now.
If I wasn't such a big fan of Sirius Satellite radio, I would have purchased a different unit months ago.
I'm happy that the unit is finally available, but I expected much more.

Unfortunately NOT ONE of the radio stations would tune in. Tried at work and at home and couldn't get a single station. Very disappointing. Also, the sound was not too great either. But I have to say, this is first return I have ever made thru Amazon and returning so far has been painless. Makes me like and trust shopping at Amazon even more.

Old School Style High Performance Portable Music System with Ipod Slot Review

(More customer reviews)I will share Gizmodo's sentiment about this product 100%. This booooombox doesn't have to sound like a Harmon Kardon system. All it has to do is look good next to cardboard and play N.W.A., Nolan Thomas, Warren G and Kenny Loggins the way they were meant to be heard. That, it does.
It does take 10 "D" cell batteries, and I found that you can find a pack of 10 at Target for about $9 if you hunt around, AND you can prolong the life of the batteries if you make sure to switch the AC/DC switch on the back to AC when you are not using it. Otherwise the clock (any "sleep mode" functions) will suck the battery life down. That or it all transferred to the iPod. I'm not sure - just make sure to flip that switch.
It even comes in a huge box you could cut up and breakdance on.

Pros:
-cage allows it to be chained down with ladders and job box.
-cord wrap keeps cable tidy when not in use.
-light weight.
-square shape lets you stack it on a two wheeler (unlike the DW & Mil).
-snap-down CD tray keeps discs from jamming if you tip it or crash into it with a skyjack.
-EQ was designed to be LOUD and fill a room with sound (see cons).
-on-board GFCI cleans up cable clutter.
-12v output and mini-jack input lets me tie in an i-pod or other gear.
-battery charger cabinet holds 8-9 CD jewel cases for safe transport!
CONS:
-EQ was not designed for the audiophile carpenter. If you want booming lows and tight high-end, buy a Bose Wave Radio and hope you don't trash it.
-no line out jack for sending to a transmitter or other device.
-FM reception is garbage, I use CDs and MP3s unless we are listening to AM.
-backlit display is not designed for viewing above horizontal. If you have the box setting on the ground, you must tip it back (or lay on the floor) to read the display. From above you see all possible icons.
-volume control doesn't give you much room for subtle music. I normally keep it on 1 or 2. Volume is electronic with a momentary up-down control via a shuttle knob (on the left)
-GFCI doors flip up, so you have to tip the unit to the side to see the plugs for mating. I just tore the doors off after a while. I figured, why have rain lids? I work indoors well after the job has been dry.
-all of the nooks and crannies on the molded case collect a LOT of dust and debris.
HINT!
The antenna is discretely hidden in the round top handle. I disassembled the unit, cut the antenna lead to the handle and soldered it to a retractable antenna (from my local RadioShack) that I attached easily to the top of the main shell. I do not reccomend this procedure, but I can tell you, it SIGNIFICANTLY increased my FM reception.

Memorex Home Audio System with iPod Dock and CD Player (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)My dad's entertainment center takes up almost an entire wall of our house. The stereo system alone consists of about 3/4 of the space. Two huge speakers flank the TV; an entertainment rack has a turntable (aka record player, if anyone even knows what those are anymore), an old CD player from the late 90's (will not recognize CD-RWs or mp3 CDs), a tuner, an amplifier, and a cassette deck (another obsolete piece of equipment).
Why am I bringing this up? Well, Memorex realizes that the times have changed and have changed to bring you all that equipment in a much smaller package: meet the Memorex Home Speaker System for Ipod. This handy dock has not only an iPod dock (and charging station!) but AM/FM radio and a CD-RW/mp3 CD changer (nice addition, may I add!).
Firstly, I really enjoyed the price. Bose docks cost almost triple of the Memorex price, and I think while the quality of the Memorex is no where near the Bose, I find that it is adequate for my purposes. The unit is pretty compact and doesn't stick out, which is great as I stick it directly on the floor. I haven't quite gotten the FM radio to sound as good as I would like, but there is a cord for FM radio reception and I'm sure if I play with it, I can get better quality. Also, the remote takes some getting used to, but it is sure nice to be able to remotely access music, switch from iPod to radio or CD or change the volume. What is also nice is this unit comes with a bass and treble modifier, which seems to work rather nicely. Also, there is a clock (nice feature!), a sleep (great for going to bed to!), and a timer, which I haven't used yet.
Overall, I am very pleased with the Memorex. It has provided what I needed (i.e. iPod dock with CD changer and radio) at a fairly low cost. I would recommend.
NOTE (7/13/09): I recently moved the unit to the counter in the kitchen of my apartment and it works amazingly! The unit is loud enough to carry into the living room, dining room and even slightly into the bedroom. The only problem I still have is the remote, which requires to be pointed very particularly at the unit in order to work.

(More customer reviews)This is the best sounding Boombox that has come out for Sirius or XM. I had this delivered to my work and five people have complement this unit on its looks and quality of sound.
As the reviewer stated below this looks much better sitting in front of you than in pictures. I like all the storage offered, you can hide the remote in the battery compartment, along with the lead for the built in antenna. The front volume and earphone jacks are rubber seals...good stuff, goes alone with the waterproof claim. The built in antenna is also rubber sealed around the base.
The sound output is very good, it has good bass with no distortion, it also has two tweeters that deliver nice highs. I have not had the hiss at low volume some other reviewers experienced, it sounds good with the volume set at 2 or 15.
Yeah it doesn't have a CD player, or even a FM, radio built in but that is not the reason I bought it. I have had XM for 9 months and not listened to regular radio once in 9 months, and maybe only 3 CD's in that time. So...I dont care about these omissions, if I wanted these functions I would have bought a regular Boombox. I have yet not been able to get a signal, and I work in a 100 year old building surrounded by brick and concrete. As a matter of fact the home antenna supplied points at a wall and I get three bars on the XT's signal meter
The remote is basic and missing some of the functions of the Delphi remote, but that is a small trade-off. Over all this is a well built Boombox, sounds better than any of the other satellite boxes out there. So in the end if you have XM you will not be disappointed if you make the purchase.

Even though I live in a rural area I had no problem picking up a good signal. Sound quality is good and the bass/treble controls (selected on XM receiver and not on boombox) seem to have good range. Only problem I have with the unit is no where to store the power adapter. So far happy with the purchase and a good way to utilize my SkyFi 2 as a portable unit.

Philips DC1010 CD Sound Machine with iPod Dock (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)There are no other reviews for this "sound machine" yet, so I thought I would share my experience. I wanted a portable speaker unit with a CD player for my ipod, since I use both CDs and my ipod for my work.
This "sound machine" does have the ipod dock, CD player and AM/FM radio. It also has a bass-boost button (which sounds like it "boosts" the bass a little).
It also has a decent volume level.
First problem, this ipod dock did NOT come with the adapter for the most recent Nano (4th generation). Therefore, the Nano just kind of looks silly sitting in the large opening in the front of the player. Because of this fact, I was concerned that it would be easy to bump the Nano around and potentially cause damage to the connector. (I do not know if this can actually happen, I am just assuming that it could, since the Nano does not appear to be properly secured.)
Secondly, the sound quality is only fair. It sounds tinny (if that's a word) and almost a bit fuzzy, like a radio station that's not perfectly tuned-in(that's the best way I can describe it). It's not static, but it was noticeable enough that I instinctivly rechecked my power cord connection and ipod placement.
I have a less expensive, but comparable CD player (without ipod dock) that has MUCH better and clearer sound than this.
No, the price of this player/ipod dock is not high, I still expected a bit more.
Third, the "sound machine" just looks cheap. It's just the first impression I got when I opened the box. Again, my cheaper CD player looks nicer and sturdier than this one.
We are sending our machine back and have decided that, for this price, maybe we will just buy a dock/speakers without the additional CD player.
Good luck, maybe I am just super picky.

(More customer reviews)I had my eye on a Sony Boombox with I-Pod dock for some time. I went into Bestbuy to check them out and I found this little gem for $60. I have Insignia cpu speakers and they sound great, but I didn't know they were in the boombox biz. There were 2 different Sony models next to it on the display shelf, one was $80 and the other was $120. This Insignia's sound blew both Sony's away! I couldn't believe it. Both Sony's sounded like my clock radio was going off, terrible, hollow sound. The Insignia has 5 different equalizer modes: Rock, Pop, Jazz, Classical & Flat. The I-pod dock plays my 5th Gen. Nano just fine. It has a CD player and 10 FM/ 10 AM presets. For those of you that have Sony Boomboxes, you need to check out the sound on this Insignia. You won't believe your ears. It also comes with a remote control.

(More customer reviews)The Memorex Party Cube is a docking boombox designed to pair up with a range of Apple iPod and iPhone products. It also offers its own built-in CD and AM/FM tuner sources. Its compact design, sturdy build and rechargeable battery make it a great option for bringing your music on-the-go. It also provides lots of sound thanks to its multi-directional speaker array, although the range of frequencies (especially low-end) is limited.
The Party Cube is roughly the size of a four-slice toaster and easy to carry thanks to its folding handle. It is made from heavy-duty plastic that feels like it would stand up to lots of jostling with minimal scratches and scuffs. The bottom of the unit is slightly rubberized for some grip - this would be useful for keeping it in place while in motion on boats and RVs. A very nice feature is that it carries its own built-in rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries, which means that it should hold a charge even if it's been shelved for some time. This feature further suits the Party Cube for on-the-fly use whenever you're heading out to the park or the beach.
The controls are simple and straightforward (play/pause/stop/track/skip/etc.), but in order to accommodate the variety of Apple products that it can dock with, there are some clear omissions. For example, when docking my iPod, I was surprised to see that there is no means for navigating the menus or selecting albums/playlists. In order to do so, you have to use the actual controls on the face of the iPod. The Party Cube does come with an adjustable backing behind the dock so that you can press the portable's buttons without worrying about bending the connection pins. I was surprised to see that the Party Cube did not come with any sort of remote control, which should have been included in order to get the most utility out of its strengths.
Soundwise, the Party Cube provided a mixed bag: it is plenty loud and easy to hear in all directions, but sound quality was not terribly impressive. The omnidirectional array of speakers makes it great for picnics or grilling on the deck - wherever you place it, everyone is hearing the same sound. Treble was not quite tinny but definitely a bit flat; bass was virtually non-existent due to the small size of the speaker cones. However, the Party Cube does provide a lot of amplification power, making it very well-suited to outdoor use. Assuming that you're not looking for perfect fidelity when using the Party Cube, the deficiencies in sound quality are an acceptable trade-off for the size of the unit.

(More customer reviews)Purchased it to use on job sites; didn't need anything too fancy, the smaller size is what attracted me. The cassette feature along with CD seemed like a nice bonus.
However, after one week the CD Player would not play a disc, instead read "no disc" even when one was inserted. I later have read where this is a common failure with this unit. I returned it and tried another, but this one gave the "no disc" error right out of the box. Very disappointing product from Sony.
I ended up returning it and got something else entirely. Don't waste your time on this product.
