(More customer reviews)I put a Visor in my car as a replacement for my other Xact receiver, which was moved inside permanently after I got the boombox for it.
It's a cool little unit that has a bright, readable, flippable display and it takes about 4-5 minutes to set it up in your car. I went with the cassette adapter instead of using the built in FM transmitter, due to volume levels as well as the chance for interference from other vehicles. The transmitter worked well when I had it turned on, and gives you the bonus of being able to broadcast the signal to second car (as long as it stays close). It's perfect for road trips, and can be easily hidden or taken along if you're in an area that you don't want it showing. The only reason I took off one star is the display is pretty small, and, even though I can see why they did this, having only one knob to set everything up is a bit of a pain in the [..]. Otherwise, this is a great starter satellite radio if you want to get the feel of what all Sirius has to offer. Dropouts are few and far between, but you can't go crazy with it and park under a bridge for any length of time, but driving under one isn't a problem for me at all.
I absolutely LOVE Sirius and will not go back to terrestrial radio even if you paid me Howard Sterns' money.

After a little over a year(one year warrenty)it burnt out.
I replaced the receiver and after a little over another year, the sheild around the connection point for the antenna broke away. It could not see the antenna anymore.I then replaced the received a third time. It only worked for 3.5 hours,then went silent,it would not re-activate after that.
I have now returned it and bought the Stiletto 100 from Sirius. IT IS AWSOME!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!! Stay away from all X-act products.The service at X-act is even worse then their products.

XAct XTR1UK Sirius Satellite Receiver with Universal Kit Review

(More customer reviews)Sirius Satellite Radio is an excellent service, with extraordinarily rich and varied content, and therefore worthy of much more than XACT Communications offers in this "universal" kit. This review is ONLY related to XACT's equipment, and NOT to the Sirius service.
I've owned the receiver and kit for three months and I am now in the market for a replacement. Here's why:
1. The keypad interface is the least intuitive of any I've ever encountered. Although I pride myself on being something of a technophile, I must contstantly refer to the user's guide to figure how how to accomplish things with this keypad. You can't even enter a station by number directly! (You must select each of the 3 digits from a displayed list of digits using arrow keys and the enter button). Although the receiver boasts storing 18 "favorites," you can not get to any directly via the keypad; in all cases you must scroll through groupings (A through F) or lists first.
2. The user's guide has a few significant errors, such as how to store favorites channels.
3. The "universal" mount for vehicles comes with one small plastic disk with two-sided tape that adheres to the dashboard. The base unit easily detaches from this disk for use in the home. However, if you want to use it in a second VEHICLE, you need another of these little disks. XACT absolutely refuses to sell the disk alone, and insists that you spend another $50 (!) for another complete kit if you want to move the unit from car to car.
4. The display is too small, and often gets "stuck" with info from prior selections, requiring a reset.
5. Mobile reception is spotty, even in clear, unobstructed areas. I'm in the NYC suburban area, and lose the signal every ten minutes or so when on the road. A friend with an in-dash receiver for Sirius experiences no such problems.
6. In order to power this unit by batteries (for use like a walkman), you must purchase a huge, clunky wrap-around battery kit for $100 (!).
I recommend you definitely consider the Sirius service, but look for an alternative to any XACT hardware.
P.S. Since first writing this review, my XACT unit failed completely due to overheating, which I discovered is a very common problem with XACT equipment. Although the store where I purchased it provided a replacement, I fear the problem recurring after the warrantee has expired.

(More customer reviews)My new car came with s Sirius radio. I liked it so much I wanted the same programming at home. I'm in Maine and was not sure I could get consistent reception.
Installation was without muss or fuss. It took all of ten minutes to hook up the receiver to my sound system and find a spot for the antenna on my deck where reception was good. The built-in signal strength indicator helped a lot. The system has worked dependably since. I did pull in the antenna during a major snowstorm so I'm not sure it works when buried in snow.
The remote is small so you have to be careful not to lose it. Apart from that, no negatives.

Pioneer Airware MyFi XM Portable Satellite Radio Review

(More customer reviews)I don't normally submit "product opinions" (I know, shame on me) but this portable XM radio from Pioneer is so good that I felt that I had to. I had been considering getting some kind of a satellite radio for my car for more than 6 months and when I found out that a friend of mine had a Delphi XM unit in his car I knew that the time had come to finally make a move :-)
I was thinking of getting a Delphi MyFi but then discovered that the Pioneer AirWare had recently hit the store shelves. I like the Pioneer brand and also liked the looks (and controls) of the Pioneer unit more than those of the MyFi .. so I picked up an AirWare at the local Circuit City (can get it cheaper elsewhere for sure). I have had it for 3 weeks now and during this time have used it EXTENSIVELY in the car, in my home office and also on business trips. It works great !
I am especially impressed by the effectiveness of the built-in FM transmitter ... I have used a few built-in and external FM transmitters in my time over the past few years but haven't had much luck with them (too much interference from other radio stations). I was pleasantly surprised (and relieved) to discover that the AirWare's transmitter is VERY effective ... I have been driving around the Connecticut/ Westchester County/NYC/Long Island region quite a bit since I got it, without having to switch FM frequencies at all !
The features and sound quality of the unit are great. It is very useful that you can record up to 5 hours of audio (via a "scheduled record" function) that you can then listen to offline when the satellite reception is not up to snuff. Another neat feature is that if you hear a song or artist that you like, you can press a button and from then on whenever that same song or artist is playing on any of the 150+ channels the unit beeps and displays a message so that, if you want, you can press the same button and the unit automatically switches to the relevant channel.
The AirWare comes with everything that you neeed to set it up at home or in a car. When using the AirWare in my car I use the "vent mount" to secure it (in its cradle) to an air vent. I have the antenna magnetically-mounted outside on the front part of the car roof. On some of the more tree-lined roads of Connecticut, satellite reception can sometimes be spotty ... you need to have line-of-sight to the XM satellites which are positioned in the southern sky .. but generally reception is very good. All-in-all I am very happy that I got it ... it is a very, very well designed and executed product ... plus the breadth and quality of the XM programming is great.
In summary I can heartily recommend both the Pioneer AirWare and the XM service !

Sirius S50-EX1 S50 Executive System Review

(More customer reviews)Having owned my S50 portable unit since December 2005, I have waited a long time until the S50 Executive Systems arrived at my local electronics store. They had just put them out on display and I was the first to buy one yesterday - not that I've been hanging out at the electronics store waiting this entire time.
I was so starved for the unit, I bought one without hesitation. I didn't even look at the $218.89 price sticker, or give price a second thought.
Today, I got the unit setup at the office and it looks great - very executive. The design and look is as elegant as the portable unit, but that is where the buck stops.
The sound is uninspiring and I was surprised to discover that there is no tone control for the device. You are stuck with the flat output of the speakers.
The volume dial is unresponsive and frustrating. You have to dial it a full rotation to get the sound to go up or down. To turn the volume up to an enjoyable level, I have to rotate the dial 3-4 full turns to the right. When someone comes into my office, or the phone rings, I have to turn the dial back the same amount. It is the only volume dial that I've experienced that requires you to do so much work to hear your music.
I had some difficulty getting a good signal from the Satellite, but it wasn't bad and it works great now.
If I wasn't such a big fan of Sirius Satellite radio, I would have purchased a different unit months ago.
I'm happy that the unit is finally available, but I expected much more.

The base allows easy attachment to the included AC charger and antenna as well as your stereo speakers. The external indoor/outdoor antenna with 21' cable costs $34.99 by itself. So you are getting the dock, charger and remote control for only $15. This is great value from my perspective.
My particular application is the recording of various CNBC programs both in the morning and in the evening. This allows me to listen to the programs during my urban commute and fast forward through the commercials. This content is extremely valuable as I work in the financial services industry and need to absorb as much news as possible before the stock market opens. The dock and its external antenna allows me to listen to the radio where is it most convenient for listening but not necessarily the best location for reception. My urban commute is generally on a bicycle, in a taxi or on a bus/subway, so having a robust method of listening to programs like CNBC Squawk Box for 30 minutes that would be otherwise be wasted is a big productivity gain.
As reception deep inside my thick-walled prewar high rise is limited, the remote antenna dramatically improves the quality of the recordings and the overall user experience. Before purchasing this dock, I would place the Stiletto 2 on the window ledge so I could record key programs. This made listening to recorded programs while it was still recording not feasible. Now, I have the Stiletto 2 on my dresser plugged into a surplus pair of computer speakers. This allows for uninterrupted recording while I am listening to recently recorded or live programs. When I am ready to leave, I quickly remove the Stiletto 2, plug in the headphones and head out the door. My one issue with the dock is that it does not accommodate the case that Sirius itself sells. So, I have to spend a few extra seconds placing the Stiletto 2 in its case. This is very minor issue, however.
One other change I would suggest to Sirius engineers is that they provide a slightly more flexible antenna mounting mechanism. For those using the antenna indoors, it would be helpful to have suction cups or adhesive mounts so it could be affixed directly to glass. While the current antenna pivots on a base, there is a limited range of motion. So even if the user wanted to use double-sided tape to attach the base to the window pane, the actual antenna would be facing into the room. In my application, I used double sided tape to attach the base to a relatively narrow window ledge. This has worked fine and I am very happy with the reception.
In summary, this home dock is an excellent value. It improves reception and make access to the radio more convenient. I would especially recommend this product for anyone who wants to record important programs and/or listen to the radio while the recording is in progress.

(More customer reviews)I love Sirius in my car for its niche channels like jazz, Folk Town and Bluegrass so I bought the Tivoli table model. On the positive side the sound is GREAT -- right up there with Bose, but the design leaves some things to be desired. 1. It won't work without external antennas for AM, FM or Sirius. 2. It does not have an internal power supply. 3. To get stereo or CD you have to buy additional boxes. 4. You really do have to have a clear view of the sky where the satelite is located. Trees and buildings block the signal. 5. You might as well order the third party signal booster and antenna extension because it only comes with a 30 foot cable to the antenna which will probably not get it to your roof. 6. There is not an easy way to feed additional stereo equipment to take advantage of a home sound system. 7. There is no way to cut off the big blue info screen which is really BIG and Blue. When installed this thing has as many wires and connections as a lobbyist in Washington. But if you can put up with the clunky design it is wonderful.

The PNP3 is the 3rd generation of this Audiovox Sirius "shuttle" receiver, and SIRIUS and Audiovox have hit a grand slam home run with the PNP3. The display on the PNP3 is the brightest and clearest of any SIRIUS (or XM receiver) that I've seen. I haven't listened to AM or FM at all since I started my SIRIUS subscription. I use the Audiovox SIR-PNP3 both in the car and the home. The wireless FM transmitter is of high quality and mighty: You can set up the PNP3 in one room, and simultaneously listen to SIRIUS through any and all of your FM radio receivers located in nearby rooms, (at broadcast distances of upwards of 100 feet in my experience.) And, if you are someone who doesn't yet know much about satellite radio: SIRIUS is better than XM: Absolutely True!

Designed for use in the car, through your home stereo, and even in Audiovox's compatible boombox, the SIR-PNP3 Sirius plug-and-play tuner receives more than 120 streaming satellite radio stations, including stations with commercial-free music, talk, sports, and children's programming. Listeners will need an Audiovox home or car kit to use the tuner, but once equipped, they can transfer the tuner between the house and the car stereo as often as they like, negating the need to buy second and third receivers. The tuner is remarkably easy to use, with a large 2.5-by-1.38-inch amber backlit LCD screen that displays the artist info, song title, category, and time, along with a 0-9 number pad and a wireless remote that allow for direct channel access. Users can manually adjust the contrast and dimming level for better viewing, or they can set the display to Auto Dimmer so that it instinctively adjusts to the ambient light level. The receiver also includes a built-in FM transmitter that broadcasts satellite tunes through any FM radio--a bonus for people whose car stereos don't come with auxiliary inputs. (More customer reviews)I purchased this unit for my wife's birthday, she had asked for the home kit for her starmate but I ended up spending the few extra dollars and getting the boomcube and I am glad I did. The unit is built well and has very good sound for such a small, portable unit. There are the same issues with this as any home satellite unit, you need to be able to place the antenna somewhere that is can get a good signal and I have found the antenna on this unit to be quite good, most times we get reception in our house without having to unhook the antenna from the unit, but when we are getting interference it is nice to have the 25 foot cord to place the antenna in a window or such. If you are interested in a home unit for Sirius I would highly recommend this unit.

At the office I have the boom box set up, and at home have a docking cradle and have it connected to my home stereo system. That way, as an auxilary input, I can use my cassette recorder and tape content I may like to keep. Sound is clear and good, mostly just going back and forth between comedy channels and Howard Stern stuff. Mostly very pleased with this purchase...here in LA reception is fine. Setting it up with the fm modulator, I have been able to send the signal to other fm radio's set to the same unused frequency to hear satellite broadcasts away from the unit. Distance only 15-20 ft, which I am working on. May wire the house so I have speakers throughout so I can hear it in every room. What? Yea, I know...
