(More customer reviews)Oh boy...where to start. I received this little 2GB wonder and was immediately impressed with the look and feel of this little gadget. Already owning a Creative Zen M, 30GB, I thought this would be a nice player for my son. After reading the directions, I fully charged the battery and prepared to download songs for my son.
The connection to the computer was easy and the GoGear player was found immediately. I proceeded to download songs. After about a gigabyte worth of songs made their way down to the device, my son eagerly stated that was enough (okay, he's 8 years old). I disconnected the player and it seemed to go through an initialization.
I showed him how to use the player, which buttons do what. I played the first song and...it locked up. I looked at the troubleshooting guide and followed the reset procedure. I turned the GoGear back on and it played my first selection. I navigated around the song list, demonstrating to my son how to find the song, band, or genre (yes, he understand genre) of his choice. He went on his way and enjoyed the GoGear for the first hour or so.
After an hour of playing songs, the GoGear locked up again. My son remembered the reset feature and continued on. After a while, sometimes a song would play for 20-30 seconds and then skip. They'd do this a few times, we'd reset the player...and it would be fine again. This happened until later in the evening when the battery (understandably) died.
I placed the device on the charger again for a full charge. The 5 hours later, I took it off the charger and it no longer would function. It would power up and then shut down. I tried resetting. I tried hooking it up to my computer. Nothing worked. It was dead. I worked with Philips for about a week to get an RMA to send it back.
I received the return authorization and shipped the devices (at my expense) back to Philips for an exchange. After two weeks, I received the new device. The face was all scratched up and clearly used...and abused. I charged the device up and hooked it up to the computer. I downloaded the songs and everything seemed fine.
I turned the "new" player on and tried to play a song...it played for 10 seconds and started to fast-play; fast forwarding through the song while playing it. The volume was extremely loud. When I attempted to turn it down, I found the volume button was jammed. It was obviously stuck.
I was done with the Go Gear players and done with Philips/Magnavox (I was burned on a VCR/DVDR last year). I have been twice burned by them with no possibility of winning me back.
Philips/Magnavox's quality is clearly absent and their customer service is less than sub par.

Radio: Maybe I'm slow or something but I've yet been able to find a great position for the FM wire antenna to get clear reception so this is why I gave 4 stars.
Remote: As the other reviewer said, my remote was also dead on delivery but I found a cheap 5 pack of the cell batteries here on Amazon so the problem was fixed soon enough.
Potential buyers should make note of the fact that this product only charges certain types and generations of iPods. It won't charge my 3rd generation 32GB iTouch...

The Delivery was pretty quick in standard shipping.
The BAD:
On the manual the word DIGITAL is spelled WRONG!!
The Manual is WAY TOO SMALL to read.
The Stylus WILL destroy the screen
The Screen is extremely un sensitive to touch, you have to press down very firmly to get what you want.
The Start Up and the Shut Down is so stupid and its ugly
The Player Display format (when you play the music, how it looks, with the artist and the song.) is ugly.
The Music list looks crappy and is loosely made to be in a list.
It looks really cheap, and it feels hollow.
It comes from a China manufacturer.(I didnt know that.)
It has NO model number or anything.
Overall:
3 out of 5
Because its a reasonable price for this piece of plastic.
And I like it, i just wish i could change the interface or customize it.
If you know where to get to customize this i would greatly appreciate it.

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-B Music System WMLS11B Review

I have always been an ardent musicphile and have subsequently grown a respectable collection of music. With a little less than 1000 CDs, physically finding the music you feel like listening to was always a chore (although there is much to be said for spending some quality time rediscovering that CD that you forgot you had). SO, I jumped on the MP3 bandwagon a couple of years ago, ripping my entire collection (up yours RIAA) onto my server. Having them on my server has made it easy to listen to whatever I like pretty much anywhere in the house where there's a computer (both son's rooms, living room, my office). I converted to iTunes recently when it became available for the PC (much nicer to synch the iPod with than MusicMatch ). BTW, I'm a software engineer and gadget freak, which explains why my house is wired with CAT6 cabling and why even my 3 year old son's computer is running at Gigabit speeds on our home network. :-)
Okay, enough babbling, onto the review:
WHY I BOUGHT IT-
I'd been toying with the idea of picking up one of the portable media players ever since they came out a year or so ago. I couldn't justify spending the cash on the designs that were out there until I found the Linksys WMLS11B. It is very aesthetically pleasing, but more importantly, it has a very nice (and large for the form factor) LCD screen and looks basically like a boombox that can play all your MP3s. Whenever I can (when the weather and family allow) I try to work from my deck or screened-in porch. I'm somewhat tired of having the iPod earbuds sticking in my ears and plugging a pair of powered computer speakers into the iPod is a hassle.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS-
For $180 ($250+ MSRP) I expected something a bit more substantial. It's not badly constructed, but seems too 'plasticky' and lightweight for the cost. Anyway, after about ten minutes, I had it configured and working on my wireless network (Linksys 802.11g). Incidentally, you need to set it up with an ethernet connection to set it up initially, but I could not get it to connect to any of my computers directly and had to finally just plug it into a router. The very first impression was that I had messed something up with the wiring because I had to have the volume all the way up to hear the music. After goofing around with everything, I decided that it was set up correctly, but just lacked the power to play adequately in anything else except an absolutely quiet room (with the sound level at MEDIUM, you can barely hear noise coming from the speakers).
PROS -
-Nice to look at
-Sound quality is pretty good once you hook up some nicer powered speakers
-Easy to set up
-Fairly compact
-Fair selection of internet radio stations
CONS -
-The included speakers leave a lot to be desired
-Must use MusicMatch (it sucks!!) or Rhapsody (a RealOne company, which if you didn't know, is run by Satan)
-For some reason, I can't get it to play more than ten songs from a playlist.
-The interface is HORRIBLE! Very non-intuitive and I spend more time scrolling through my collection than actually listenting to music. Most frustrating is that after you scroll down for a couple of MINUTES and find 'Modest Mouse', if you change your mind and decide you want to listen to 'Menomena' instead, the interface tosses you back to the top-most menu, meaning that you have to select 'BROWSE' then select 'ARTIST/ALBUM' then scroll down for several more minutes to get back to the M's.... Even a submenu that allowed you to scroll through the alphabet and select, say, 'M' and then browse all the M's would be VERY nice. If the playlist function worked properly, then you could invest some time and set up your favorite songs and/or artists, but for spontaneously searching through your catalog... uhh, you won't.
-For some reason, I occasionally lose signal with my network and it can't find the server (even though I have my laptop receiving 54Mbps with excellent signal strength right next to it). Not a frequent occurence, just puzzling.
-Being 802.11b based, it only supports WEP and not WPA.:-(
-No carry handle
-The remote is pretty good, but doesn't work unless pointed directly at the unit and from within a very shallow angle from center.
-No headphone jack on the front
-Too many cables sticking out of the back. Cable management is so easy, yet apparently an alien concept to most manufacturers.
CONCLUSIONS:
It's just frustrating to have something soooo close to being good, but having some poor design muck it up. I really wish they'd assign it a more iPod-like interface (where you can use the back button to go to your previous menu level and selection). I also wish they'd find some way to tap into iTunes as a server or roll their own (okay, I can dream). I believe that if Linksys were to revamp the interface firmware and take care of some of the problems with the 'music server', it would be worthwhile. Unfortunately, I've dealt with Linksys for too long to even hope that they'd bother to update this version. They will instead release a newer, improved version which will make this model the MP3 Edsel.
I'm going to return this to the store today as I have a 10 day 'remorse period' that expires on Monday.
Nice try Linksys, better luck next time. :-(

The sound's not bad, if you can stand the frequent switching of stations.

In my car and on my boat, the Airplay works very well, even here in Southern California where there really aren't any completely clear FM frequencies. The Airplay seems to have much more power than at least two other FM transmitters I have tried, which enable it to function very well.
Setting up the Airplay is simplicity itself; one simply plugs it into the top of the Ipod and dial in the desired FM frequency. No software to deal with. Make sure that the volume control of the Ipod is at about 60-70%--this is the only critical setting. The Airplay has greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the Ipod by enabling me to use the Ipod anywhere I have an FM radio, thereby letting me use the nice speaker systems in my boat and car. Great! One day, of course, car and marine stereos will have Ipod docks. But until that happy day, the Airplay will be there for us.

These days, people shopping for a cassette Walkman probably listen to audiobooks or have a boxful of old tapes they think they'll get around to playing. Neither customer likely expects Dolby noise reduction or the ability to play CrO2 or metal tapes. Also, in case you were planning to dictate notes to self, note now that this unit does NOT record.
The pleasant surprise is what you DON'T expect to find at this price: Attractive styling, digital tuning with presets, comfortable headphones, exceptional battery life (from one AA battery!), and a "hold" button that prevents unintended station changes when the unit is stuffed in a pocket.
What isn't so hot? Well, weather band has weak reception even in areas with usable signal, the "bass boost" function produces a sonic mudslide that will alarm even "boom car" afficionados, and the nearly opaque clamshell makes you eject to read the tape label or see how much tape remains on a side (yikes).
At this humble price point, the presence of a few nice touches -- and lack of jarring penalties -- spells an easy five stars.

Just purchased this yesterday, so I don't have good numbers on how long it takes to drain the iPod's battery. I do know that you can get a solid 4 hours at least. This unit does a fantastic job of transmitting my iPod selections to my FM stereo radio. I can take the iPod 30 metres away, around the house, and the music continues without interruption. I've heard that some of the FM transmitter systems didn't have much of a range, and was pleasantly surprised to find that this one is quite good.
For FM reception - you stick your headphones into the unit itself, rather than into the iPod's headphone jack - so I presume that it is just using the iPod as a power source rather than anything particularly intelligent.
Not needing to buy two different units seems like a good idea to me.
The one downside is that there is no way to charge the iPod while the Kensington unit is connected, whereas some of the FM transmitter-only systems can be plugged into car power supplies.

(More customer reviews)I bought this item because I wanted all of the items included in the package (cover, & speakers). It seemed like a good value and Pyles website listed it for well over $200 and I thought I was getting a good price from the amazon seller AntOnline.
Well the unit arrived and was miserably disappointed because the unit felt cheap, flea market made in China cheap. Actually I never really hooked it up to hear the sound or CD quality or functionality - The radio faceplate would not close properly, and if I tried really hard and pressed on the left edge it sorta closed, but then it popped open as soon as you started manipulating buttons. Im not sure if this was a product defect or a security measure to deter thieves from deciding that this piece of #$%^& was not worth stealing.
The "waterproof" feature is actually black tape covering all the vent holes in the chassis and I'm not too confident that this unit would actually hold up a marine environment. The splashproof housing cover had weak/worn springs and would not stay open - thus was useless. Speakers were tiny with tiny magnets - I did not test them.
All in all I would say a big thumbs down - I think I'm going

PYLE PRO PT260A 200 Watt 2 Channel Home Stereo Receiver w/AM FM Tuner Review

(More customer reviews)I am writing this review in response to an earlier reviewer's comment about the hiss problem with this receiver.
I purchased this unit 6 months ago because I needed a receiver for under $700 that could handle a pair of 4ohm speakers. I was a bit skeptical about just how well this would work, but for less than $100 I believed it would be worth a shot.
Initially, I encountered a similar difficulty with the hiss (as well as some clipping and distortion).
However, as soon as I switched out the 4ohm speakers for an 8ohm Bose set, the receiver sang just fine. A keeper!
(Note that some minor amp hum is to be expected with *any* receiver. The only time I can hear it on this model is when I place my ear directly in front of the speakers. That said, I have noticed over the years that some reviewers can be quick to growl at equipment when the real problem is poor speaker placement. There are several good articles on the web that provide details on how to avoid the audible consequences of positioning speakers too high or at incorrect angles.)
That aside, here are a few other perks of the Pyle PT-260-A:
- At level 10 (out of 40) it provides good background sound. At 20, it can fill a large room and be heard clearly in the next room. At 30, it becomes uncomfortable to the ears.
- The EQ controls are programmed to handle a significant range, with the bass creeping as low as 40Hz (not always the case in cheaper model receivers, which usually only stretch to 60-80Hz). Meantime, the treble only reaches as far as 15kHz, which is actually a strength considering the depth of the bass (cheaper models tend to exaggerate the high end, which is why they tend to be characterized as sounding tinny). All that said, one slight twist of the EQ knobs can make quite a difference. Be sure to play around with different combinations until you land on just the right sound for your speakers and your setting.
- The mic inputs work great for karaoke. Not my cup of tea, per se, but wonderful for children who want to sing along with a CD. (They also will have a lot of fun with the echo control!)
And of course all equipment has quirks:
- For my needs (with only one component connected), the PT-260-A serves its purpose quite well. However, if you intend to input more than one component, there is only one selector switch on the unit itself (though there is a separate button for CD, Aux, Tuner, etc. on the remote). In addition, the unit sets to Tuner each time it powers up (which then blasts the room with radio static if you don't have the antenna connected).
- If you plan to use a turntable with this receiver, you will need to pick up a phono preamp (there is no powered input).
- The display is a bit cheesy. The EQ meter simply dances a preset light pattern that has nothing to do with the music being pushed through. (Though it can be amusing to watch it bounce out of rhythm with the music!)
So the verdict:
This receiver costs less than $100. For a model that operates on par with more expensive models, it is worth learning to live with a couple of minor bugs.
If you are on a budget, or have children who express an interest in listening to music, this is *the* way to go. If only a receiver of this quality had been available at this price when I was in high school! (In the early 1990s, the cheapest comparable model would have cost $250-350.)

Memorex Mi4004BLK iWake Clock Radio for iPod (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)This unit was my second try at an ipod clock radio. My first, the iHome, turned out to only have 1 alarm. This one has two, so far so good. And, I think the iWake sounds better, too. So much for the good stuff.
When you read the comment from an earlier reviewer about the volume going up, you have no idea how bad it is. It is NOT gradual awakening over 60 seconds, it is the volume going up a notch every 5 seconds to MAX. So unless you put this right next to you, expect to be scrambling so the entire neighborhood isn't calling the cops. Memorex calls this a feature in their manual ("no need to set the alarm volume"). Haha, very funny.
Next, don't plan on putting the unit above eye level, or you won't be able to see anything but a nice lit rectangle instead of the time. The display is like the old black and grey LCD's that were very directional (although this one is well lit). Trouble is, there's no adjustment for the viewing angle.
My third gripe is the remote. It's much better than the iHome remote (which was WAY too directional), but let's say you want to raise or lower the volume. To do so, you have to press the up or down volume button repeatedly as each press only changes the volume 1 bar (out of 12). In retrospect, a pretty silly thing if you try to use the remote to keep from blasting the neighbors when the alarm goes off, because the volume keeps going up every 5 seconds while you're trying to wake up and repeatedly press the correct button in the dark. Hope nobody got that on tape, I could be a hit on youtube :)
Surely a remote that can smoothly raise/lower the volume like any $5 all-in-one can't be that hard to engineer.
If you are going to have this right close by, you can probably overcome the annoying alarm, assuming you can move it so you can read the time. For me, too many compromises.

Delphi SkyFi2 XM Satellite Radio Receiver and Car Kit Review

(More customer reviews)After much research, I finally decided that this was the receiver for me! So far, so good.
I am primarily using this in the car, so I grabbed this version that included the car kit. If you only want one receiver but want to use it in two cars, you will need an extra car kit. It's too annoying to try to move the antenna between cars. I had looked at a few portable units, but I chose this one since it was designed primarily for those in the car, and I wanted the a unit that was going to be easy to use when I'm in the car.
Installation was very easy. I did it myself, and my antenna is on top of my roof near the front. The antenna cord is about 24 feet long, so there is plenty of extra cord if you are in a sedan like me. I ran my cord right under the weatherstripping on the front windsheild as was suggested at cruchfield.com, then through the door and around the door jam. The kit also includes one of those little tubes that you can fit around your cords, as you will have three: antenna, power and the cassette. All cords plug into the base.
I used the air vent base installation instructions (the kit also comes with dashboard mount and a swivel mount, but both can damage your car when you're ready to remove the mounts). The only thing is that I wish it were a little more steady from side to side when I am pushing the buttons. It takes some playing around with to get just right.
The receiver itself has been pretty easy to use. I definitely recommend actually reading the instructions on how to use all of the different buttons. There are 30 memory buttons available. There is also a neat feature that will alert you to when your favorite artist or song is playing, and the alert will allow you to go straight to that channel if you so desire.
One downside is that only the buttons have a backlight. The labels above them do not have these lights. So, until I get to remember exactly where the "jump," "memory" and "menu" buttons are, it's going to be to difficult to use them in the dark.
There is also a 30 minute record/replay function on this receiver. However, anything you save is erased when the unit is turned off.
I tracked this item for a few weeks before I bought it, as I noticed that the price occasionally would change from day to day. Amazon's price when I bought this three days ago was $93.99, and today it is listed about $3 less. Some third party merchants have dropped the price below the Amazon price from time to time, but generally, the Amazon price has been the lowest.
If you buy this item before the end of April 2006, there is also a $30 rebate available from XM.
Although I have not actually been a Sirius subscriber, I took advantage of the online trials with Sirius and XM. I also read some reviews of both and examined their channel guide. Their offerings are very similar. If you are interested in sports, XM has great college ACC/Pac 10/Big 10 channels (I am a UNC grad, so I have to have my ACC sports!), NASCAR and MLB. Sirius offerings are more towards NFL/MLH fans. One review I read said that the music on Sirius tended to be what he phrased as "riskier," which the reviewer defined as playing more deep cuts, etc. I have been very, very pleased with the XM offerings, playlist, variety, talk, etc. No complaints with XM here!
