Sony WMFS593 Sports Walkman Review

(More customer reviews)I loved my 499 model (sold here). It had mechanical play/ff/rev buttons. This model has a knob the goes in 4 directions and down. I hate it. It is too sensitive to touch (I often hit it by accident and send the tape back or forward :( ), and is difficult to use without looking as the orientation is a bit offset. Also the engaging head is electronic and takes about 2 seconds to change from ff/rev to play. For me, it takes too long while scanning stop and go... (I tend to forward through material - like commercials taped from radio). Anyway, it makes for poor scanning speed and if you pass your point of interest, more pain to back up a bit. I have just ordered another 499 model and will get rid of this one. One last negative: The headphone jack is at the bottom! and with it clipped to a belt makes for barely any slack in the (supplied!) headphone cord! Bending a little to the side will exhaust the length... I am 5-11 and so not extremely tall. This unit is a real disappointment. Oh yeah, the buttons are SUPER stiff for the radio/menu/tuning. I understand being new, but it just is one more downer for this miss of a design.

While it lasted, the sound was good and no problems with the functions. Wish they could have developed a player that could withstand shocks. (Forget Walkman Shock players, more $$ and they're junk.) Looks like cassette players are passe. Too bad, because I listen to books-on-tape.

Sony D-NF610 ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman with Digital Tuner Review

(More customer reviews)After using this device for one month+, this is a small list I gathered here for good/bad things about this little mp3 player.
Pros:
- You set your favorite radio stations, and it is still there after you change the battery.
- Good sound output quality and can deliver high sound levels
- Two level dynamic bass (although, i dont like to use)
- Your old MP3 CD's will suddenly make sense.
- Long battery life. I bet if they put some kind of solar cell on this devices, it would run with them perfectly without battery nor main power.
- some of other sony cd mp3 players has much successful (harder to break) control buttons. But D-NF610 looks smooth and beautiful with its radio.
Cons:
- My reason to give it 4 star (canceling 1 star) is its poor quality buttons. Especially the CD OPEN button is a stiff plastic, when you bend it by pressing, CD door is open. Someday either it will loose its speciality of keeping the cd door close, or it will be broken.
- Sometimes when I try to change radio channels, CD starts playing. Because of tooo compact and joint button desings. I have small fingers.
- Poor quality radio, especially when I compare to my old sony walkman radio. Too much noise and no MONO/STEREO switch.
- There is a USA/Europe shortwave radio BW (9KHz or 10KHz) switch to make you choose. But No switch for NTSC/PAL/SECAM systems. So TV Tuner does not work in Europe. I guess, you will need to buy D-NF611 for Europe.
- You will need a cd player bag.
- Japans and I have opposite intuitive direction feeling. When I use Jog Dial button, it does the opposive of what I thought. (That had happened to me with my Sony CMD Z5, I guess this is something to do with japaness culture)
- You cannot register this item, if you are not living in USA/Canada.
- No built in battery charger. This seems a logical decision to remove such a charger, because it is a very simple and cheap circuitry to do that. Would only increase its cost of production say 1 cent for sony, but would made our life easier.

Sony D-FJ003 CD Walkman with AM/FM Tuner (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I wanted the reliability and quality of a Sony, and a CD player AND radio in one unit was very important to me, but I did not want to pay a lot as not too long ago I had purchased a Panasonic CD player/radio, and the CD player conked out on me pretty rapidly. This Walkman is durable (I have dropped it a few times, and the CD didn't even skip when dropped, and the unit still works wonderfully!). It is also relatively simple to operate. However, I do not like the buttons or display window much. The buttons are hard to press one-handed, and the display is hard to read most of the time. The buttons and display are located on the edge/circumference of the Walkman rather than on the nice, broad top, making it difficult to access them. NEVERTHELESS, if you want a quality Sony product at a good price and you aren't terribly bothered by button or display ergonomics (I am not), this is a Walkman for you. Great value for the money!

Unfortunately, the radio only pretends to be digital (the tuner display) -- it's actually an analog radio and a very poor one at that. In fact, it's effectively unusable as a radio because it won't 'lock' to a station, even when the 'digital' tuner says the correct frequency.

Although the station-lock feature is useful, the unit keeps beeping whenever the locked buttons are jostled. Finally, I wish they'd either include better earphones or leave them out and let us buy our own. On the plus side: convenient, and with good sound (using Koss portaphones!)

Sony 4 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player (Red) Review

(More customer reviews)The Sony NWZ-S616 has a lot of good going for it, and I'd recommend just a few improvements.
Good: Excellent battery life, beautiful screen, navigation and buttons very intuitive (dedicated volume button a HUGE plus), and really top-notch sound quality - I'd rank it right up there with iAudio/Cowon mp3 players easily. The ability to support playlists, and its wide array of music play options is a plus (play by genre, year, artist, album, etc). Big plus is drag-and-drop capability (on a PC). No proprietary software needed. Nice form factor, too - not as thin as an iPod nano (3 gen) but, not as wide either.
Lacking: Needs a firmware update so you can delete files from the player! Really, there ought to be a way to delete accidentally uploaded music that you just don't care to listen to without having to hook the player up to your PC. Not good. Another firmware update suggestion would be to make possible a way to preview the next song (correct me if I'm wrong, but I couldn't find a way to do this).
Also, it would be nice to have the option to buy some accessories for the player, but noooo...Sony's dragging its feet on getting these available to the public, and at this time, no third-party accessories to be found.
Overall, a great player with a lot of upside if you're looking for great sound quality and flexible play options.

(More customer reviews)You don't have to have a chat now to use the FM radio. But the whole thing is kind of fuzzy and there is no way to tell what radio station you are on unless you wait for the person to say what radio it is.
The piece works well with the chat now communicators but it makes your ear feel and sometimes you hear funny afterwards for about three minutes.

Panasonic RF-SW70 ShockWave Headphone Radio Review

(More customer reviews)The Panasonic RF-SW70 has a lot of bells and whistles, but the sound quality is about a "C" with the bass turned on, and unpleasantly tinny with the bass turned off. The plastic earphones were uncomfortable and kept popping out of my ears. There's an annoying beep every time one changes the station.
Of all the portable walkabout radios I've tried, this was the least intuitive/most complicated to use. I had to sit down with the instructions to figure out how to use the bass function. I worked with the instructions for 10 or 15 minutes to try to pre-set some favorite stations, and was still unable to figure out how to do this. Likewise the lap timer was confusing. It's a stop watch one can have beep every 1, 5, or 10 minutes, but I wasn't clear on how to work it. Many people will not need this feature. There's also a "city function" to receive better reception on FM broadcasts from weaker stations. Ironically, I was able to pull in these stations only when this function was turned off.
Other features include:
* a secure belt clip
* tapered shape for holding in the palm of the hand
* light-weight (3.6 ounces including headphones)
Overall I was not terribly impressed. With mediocre sound quality and confusing functions, I find other radios to be better buys.

Sony 2 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player with FM Tuner (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I've used just about every MP3 player there is and this one is right there with the best of them. It's small light and extremely easy to use. You don't need ANY software to upload songs to it. The device shows up like a drive on your PC. You have the option of using Windows Media Player 11 to upload songs, but I'd rather just drag and drop songs or use my Napster subscription to upload songs from Napster's huge library. I thought 2GB wouldn't be enough but it is so easy to upload songs when my mood changes that it's never been an issue for me. If you like to watch movies then you may want to go with the larger 4GB (NWZS616) or 8GB (NWZS618) versions of this model since a typical movie takes up ~700K memory after you compress it to QVGA. If you want a larger screen size then you can get the NWZA815. That model is basically the same player with a larger screen. It also has a heavier metal shell, but it does not have an FM tuner like the NWZS615, and I wanted the FM tuner. I typically use my player in shuffle mode in my car and if I don't want to hear a song, it is a breeze to reach down and click just to the right of the center button to skip to the next song. I honestly can't see how anyone would be disappointed with this player especially when you consider the great price.

Sony AM/FM/Weather Walkman Radio - SRF-M37V Review

(More customer reviews)The Sony SRF-M37V is a palm-sized Walkman type radio that requires headphones. It uses one AAA battery providing reasonable battery life. It is quite superior for AM listening and has become a favorite with hobby DXers. If you are trying to hear a distant talk show, this radio is a great choice. The FM section is average in both selectivity and sensitivity. Your headphone cord doubles as its FM antenna. You'll hear local stations but don't expect miracles. Weather band reception was an afterthought. Sony's engineers did not add narrowband circuitry appropriate for receiving weather band stations. By using the same broadband circuitry used for broadcast FM, you'll hear nearly all seven weather frequencies at once regardless of which channel you have chosen. Unless you are fairly close to a weather band transmitter, do not expect to hear anything on this band. The radio does include a time-of-day clock, but it can only be read when the unit is off. Finally, all the pushbuttons on the unit are quite sensitive and can be accidentally pressed especially the power on/off button. Learn to use the button lock-out switch on the top of the set. It will cure your aggravation. Instead of the SRF-M37V, I would highly recommend the very basic Sony SRF-59 all-analog Walkman radio. It's half the price, works just as well on AM and sounds better. The only thing you will lose is the convenient pushbutton presets offered on the SRF-M37V. Either way, you can't go wrong. Both Sony models are good values.
