Sony WMFS593 Sports Walkman Review

Sony WMFS593 Sports Walkman

I loved my 499 model (sold here). It had mechanical play/ff/rev buttons. This model has a knob the goes in 4 directions and down. I hate it. It is too sensitive to touch (I often hit it by accident and send the tape back or forward :( ), and is difficult to use without looking as the orientation is a bit offset. Also the engaging head is electronic and takes about 2 seconds to change from ff/rev to play. For me, it takes too long while scanning stop and go... (I tend to forward through material - like commercials taped from radio). Anyway, it makes for poor scanning speed and if you pass your point of interest, more pain to back up a bit. I have just ordered another 499 model and will get rid of this one. One last negative: The headphone jack is at the bottom! and with it clipped to a belt makes for barely any slack in the (supplied!) headphone cord! Bending a little to the side will exhaust the length... I am 5-11 and so not extremely tall. This unit is a real disappointment. Oh yeah, the buttons are SUPER stiff for the radio/menu/tuning. I understand being new, but it just is one more downer for this miss of a design.

Sony WM-FS221 Sports Walkman Cassette Player Review

Sony WM-FS221 Sports Walkman Cassette Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Learn from my mistakes. Don't buy this product!
The name "sports" walkman is tantamount to false advertising for this unit. Each one of these lasts appoximately 2 months . . . if you drop it even once from belt-high -- and it is likely that you will, because the belt clip breaks very easily -- it is finished.
The plastic shell does not protect the mechanism from impact any more than the shell of a [less expensive] model. I've now bought three of these for use while lifting weights at the gym. Because they break so quickly, I've returned all three under warranty, and never heard ANYTHING from SONY. That's three walkmans, within the past year. Three strikes, and it is out.
The design of the product is also poor: the headphone outlet is positioned such that the wire plugs into the bottom of the unit. That means that you lose about 4 inches from an already short headphone cord. Any kind of stretching (such as when doing pull-ups), and the headphones either unplug, or pull the unit off your belt. And when it hits the ground . . . it's finished. Here's another example of a design snafu: the nylon wrist strap is positioned in such a way that it interferes with your use of the belt clip. This configuration means that you must make a choice as soon as you buy the unit: either commit to strapping the device to your arm or wrist with the belt-clip bulge on your skin, or cut the nylon strap off and wear it on your belt. Yet another example of poor layout: the battery door opens counter-intuitively: unlike other walkman-like devices I've used, you must push the clip toward the direction of the door hinge. This wouldn't be a problem, except that Sony chose to also put the battery compartment inside the cassette player itself. Accordingly, removing the cassette often results in opening the battery compartment (and dropping the batteries).
The bottom line is this: if you buy this product expecting "sport" to equate to "durable" (as I did), you are kidding yourself. If you buy it for listening to music while safely cradled in a nest of pillows, you're wasting your money: units half the price that do not hold themselves out to be "sports" anything will deliver the same sound quality.

CDs are wonderful, but most people still have boxes of cassettes full of great music, much of it not out--or not owned--on CD. Sony's WM-FS221 Sports Walkman stereo cassette player lets you relive your cassette music when on the go. Its rugged Sports design is both stylish and durable, and the unit includes drift-free, digitally synthesized FM stereo--as well as wideband AM, TV (channels 2 to 13), and weather band (channels 1 to 7) reception.
The player's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) maintains an even volume level, guarding against unintended level increases and evening the output of musical passages that vary widely in level. Mega Bass produces deep, rich bass tones. Finally, an anti-rolling mechanism maintains stable tape speed to minimize music-distorting "wow and flutter" while the player is in motion.
For the radio, 40-station preset tuning (with auto scan tuning) offers one-button tuning to your choice of seven TV stations, four weather-band stations, 24 FM stations, and five AM stations. An FM local/distant (DX) switch improves reception of fuzzy stations. Two AA batteries (not supplied) provide up to 32 hours (maximum) of continuous tape playback, or up to 40 hours of FM radio reception.
An action grip with reflective cushion provides comfort and safety, while an included belt clip lets you wear the Walkman, freeing your hands for other activities. The player's water-resistant seals help keep out water, moisture, and dirt.

I had this personal cassette player for little over a year. Unfortunately, after dropping it the headphone connection shorts (even though I bought new earbuds). While it lasted, the sound was good and no problems with the functions. Wish they could have developed a player that could withstand shocks. (Forget Walkman Shock players, more $$ and they're junk.) Looks like cassette players are passe. Too bad, because I listen to books-on-tape.

Don't be fooled by the word "Sports" in the name. This is an unwieldy item not suitable for use during running or walking. I was particularly disappointed because my last Sony Sports model was small, lightwieght, and survived my less than gentle handling for 5 years. Too bad they broke the mold.

SONY CFD-S200 CD Radio Cassette Recorder Boombox

I am amazed at how good this small boom box sounds. I bought it to use in my office and here's a few reasons I love it:
-volume control is highly incremental so you can always find the right volume.
-Looks sleek and sophisticated.
-Has a remote control.
-Does not blare when volume is turned up.
-Sounds better than any of another 5 products I tested in this category/price at a store.
-CD motor is very quiet.

Sony WM-FX290 Stereo Cassette Player with FM/AM/TV/Weather Tuning Review

Sony WM-FX290 Stereo Cassette Player with FM/AM/TV/Weather Tuning
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The WM-FX290 plays tapes clearly without the warbly speed changes (known as "wow and flutter") that render piano music unbearable. At this price point, competency is the key; anything better is icing on the cake.
These days, people shopping for a cassette Walkman probably listen to audiobooks or have a boxful of old tapes they think they'll get around to playing. Neither customer likely expects Dolby noise reduction or the ability to play CrO2 or metal tapes. Also, in case you were planning to dictate notes to self, note now that this unit does NOT record.
The pleasant surprise is what you DON'T expect to find at this price: Attractive styling, digital tuning with presets, comfortable headphones, exceptional battery life (from one AA battery!), and a "hold" button that prevents unintended station changes when the unit is stuffed in a pocket.
What isn't so hot? Well, weather band has weak reception even in areas with usable signal, the "bass boost" function produces a sonic mudslide that will alarm even "boom car" afficionados, and the nearly opaque clamshell makes you eject to read the tape label or see how much tape remains on a side (yikes).
At this humble price point, the presence of a few nice touches -- and lack of jarring penalties -- spells an easy five stars.

A battery-level indicator on the LCD provides visible indication of when you may need to carry replacements, and the unit's Automatic Volume Limiter System (AVLS) automatically adjusts music passages that vary widely, improving your comfort. An FM Local/Distant (DX) switch provides optimal reception of both near and distant stations and the device comes with headphones, a carry case, and a belt clip. What's in the Box Cassette player, stereo headphones (MDR-023) a carry case, a belt clip, and a user's manual.

Sony CFD-E90 CD Radio Cassette Recorder (White) Review

Sony CFD-E90 CD Radio Cassette Recorder (White)
Average Reviews:

Purchased it to use on job sites; didn't need anything too fancy, the smaller size is what attracted me. The cassette feature along with CD seemed like a nice bonus.
However, after one week the CD Player would not play a disc, instead read "no disc" even when one was inserted. I later have read where this is a common failure with this unit. I returned it and tried another, but this one gave the "no disc" error right out of the box. Very disappointing product from Sony.
I ended up returning it and got something else entirely. Don't waste your time on this product.

Coby CX-49 AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player Review

Coby CX-49 AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My Sony Walkman finally stopped playing tapes, although the radio still works, after many months of books on tape and radio that gets me through housework, gardening and other chores. But, the only cassette recorder I could find when I went to replace it was this Coby CX-49. Halfway through a book and desperate to keep going, I bought it. The radio never gets in my favorite station without static (the old half-dead Sony is about a billion times clearer) and after owning the Coby for six days, I was sitting still in a chair when suddenly the tape starts distorting - turns out that, despite fresh batteries, one of the spindles has stopped turning. And it never started again. Don't waste your money like I wasted mine. I am now scouring the web for a stash of Sony Walkman cassette players I can buy up and hoard, because Coby is no substitute.

Coby's CX-49 Personal AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player provides convenient, no-frills, cassette playback, for a price it'd be difficult to complain about. Its lightweight, compact design features a built-in belt clip for portable use. Enjoy auto stop at the tape's end and a fully functional AM/FM tuner.

Stereo Cassette Playback Enjoy all your favorite cassettes at home or on the go, whether you're addicted to books on tape, picking up the latest underground cassette releases, or looking to revisit a box full of dusty mix tapes. The CX-49 features an auto-stop function, so it'll turn off at the end of each cassette rather than sit there wasting batteries.

AM/FM Tuner It's always nice to have options--tune into your favorite radio station when the tape's over with the built-in AM/FM radio tuner.

Belt Clip If you're doing some gardening, cleaning, or anything requiring two hands, just use the built-in belt clip to keep the CX-49 at your side.

Powering Options The CX-49 runs on two AA batteries (not included) for portable use, or you can pick up a 3V adapter to power it from a wall socket.

Headphones and Earbuds Included A pair of lightweight basic headphones are included, along with some earbuds for those who prefer in-ear listening. You can, of course, opt for your own favorites with the standard 3.5-mm output, or even take a line to your stereo's aux input.

Sony ZS-S2iP CD Boombox with iPod Dock, Black Review

Sony ZS-S2iP CD Boombox with iPod Dock, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Almost did not buy this little gem after reading the rather luke-warm reviews about the sound quality and other nit-picking items. Found this on clearance at a local box store and for the price took a flyer that it would serve for picnics and other outdoor music uses. This little box is GREAT for the use I wanted it for! It is NOT a replacement for my two home theater systems sound systems. It DOES NOT have a permanent hearing loss creating bass presence. But, it DOES run anywhere off of "C" cell batteries. It DOES play almost any variety of CD media. It DOES have a decent FM and AM tuning engine, and even more interesting...although it is not indicated anywhere on the box or in the advertising....the thing allows for my new 160 Gig iPod Classic to be plugged right into the front of it (even nicer with the little docking adapter that comes with the iPod) and the Sony remote actually operates the Generation 6.5 iPod perfectly! Operates all the iPod wheel functions, skips songs, THE WORKS! If there has to be a negative, the plastic carrying handle seems a little lightweight, but time will tell how it stands up to use. Nice product!!
