Vers 2X iPod Sound System (Cherry Wood) Review

(More customer reviews)My wife and I purchased this as a music player for our baby's room. When we first got it, as we imagined, it looked beautiful and for sometime, it worked well.
The problem (as best as I can describe it) started happening about a week after use. When we turn on the unit, the music will play but only for a while before going quiet - no sound. The time it takes to go quiet varies. Sometimes, it's very gradual, over several minutes it will just start getting quieter and quieter until we can't hear it anymore. Sometimes, it's almost instantaneous - we can hear one or two words of the song before it goes quiet. Once quiet (or effectively mute) the only way we can get it play music again or hear sound is to power off and power on the device to start it again. We would have to do this about 10-12 times before the until will play music at the desired volume for any amount of extended play and even then, the volume will very slowly decrease over time.
I've sent the above description to the manufacturers as per their instructions and I may be able to recommend the product depending on their actions so we'll see yet.
(Update)
Since posting this, I've contacted Vers directly. They have shipped a new unit with a return label. Upon receipt of the new unit, I will ship them back the defective unit. Hopefully, this solves my problem BUT nonetheless, I'm very happy with the customer service from Vers. I have no problems recommending their product now.
(Update 2 - Had to delete my review and repost it with the appropriate star/product rating)
It's been about 2 weeks now that we've received our new Vers 2x direct from the manufacturer and so far so good. One thing that is for sure, their customer support is the best I've ever received for any product. Return shipping of the defective unit was covered and I'm in Canada! They have identified the issue and indicated it as a known defect but all new units no longer have this problem. It was an issue on older units and only ~5% of them had this problem...so if after a week or so of use, you don't have the sound fade issue, you should be good to go. As indicated, this product (and product support) deserves 5 stars.

(More customer reviews)If you are going to spend big bucks on a large screen TV, why not get a good quality audio system too. Any of them will beat TV speakers. Given the amount of time most people use their TV, would encourage others to get a good audio system if they can afford it. This thing brings a whole new dimension to movies as well as other programming.
So far, have the center and front speakers hooked up along with the sub woofer. Like the adjustable active sub woofer volume knob. Have more speaker wire on the way for the long wire runs on my side and rear speakers. Am not using HDMI cables on my standard definition system yet. Next, will begin mounting more speakers with the Sanus mount system.
The clear and deep sound quality of this powerful 1200 watt system is great for the money- as many reputable online review sources said. The powered (110 volt) 290 watt subwoofer will make the floor shake, windows rattle and my cat head for cover. One can crank up the volume to the point where the house is vibrating but it still maintains clarity and quality sound. They include cheap little plastic protective pads to keep the sub woofer from marking floors. After watching a James Bond movie with it, believe the 10" sub woofer, that is pointed straight down, was designed so viewers could feel explosions and such for it sure shakes the floorboards. It gives one a sense of being right in the action scenes when you can actually feel the movie. All of the wires are fully color coded making it easy to hook up with no mistakes. It would be hard to be unable to get this system up and running properly if you pay attention to the easy set up guide.
Consumer Reports rated the Onkyo 5100 model that this system recently replaced their highest rated choice for a home theater system. It was the only model that they rated "very good" for sound quality. All of the rest only rated "good" per their opinion. This 5200 model is a new release to replace their 5100 system. Wonder just how many systems CR tested total.
You can't go too far wrong here for high sound quality at a budget price. One review source said Onkyo consistently beats other brands.
My goal was high quality sound and realism at a reasonable price. Will add extras (blu-ray player...) after I have the system set up and properly tuned with their included syncronization mic system that automatically adjusts the system for each unique application, room size, etc.
Everything about this HTIB is big including the large, heavy box it comes in. Physics is physics- that's how they get the clear, deep, high quality sound out of the sound chambers. All of the speakers have a real wood grain laminate exterior finish- look good. There are numerous higher priced Onkyo home theater systems and one lower priced model than this one.
Oct. 6, '09: Consumer Reports has now put this one- the Onkyo 5200 system in their number one spot with a Yamaha YHT-591 model second at $600 and a cheaper Yamaha YHT-391 ($300) in third place. They have these three systems rated "very good" for sound quality currently. Been enjoying mine about everyday now. Especially using it for XM music from my Direct TV satellite connection. Am now working on getting a good old fashion TV antenna 34' feet into the air with a powered pre amplifer on it for all of my regional broadcast stations. The amplified rabbit ears have to go with what's available free off the airways nowadays.
Nov. 13, 2009: Am definitely getting my money worth out of this system. Use it a lot for XM music. Usually last less than five minutes before I switch from TV speakers to the home theater system and turn off the TV- great sound quality. There is no comparison with TV speakers. It is comparable to a high quality stereo system.
Dec. 9 2009: Consumer Reports now has the Onkyo 7200 model ($800) in 1st place with the 5200 model in 2nd. They rated the Yamaha YHT-391 ($300) system a best buy. CR rated all of them "very good" for sound quality. Have noticed that many appear to like the Onkyo 6200 model system for its capabilities.
Bought my Onkyo 5200 HTIB system back when they were going for a best price of $500.00 or more at about all of the larger online retailers. Paid $443.00 for my system new including shipping from a small but reputable seller but I have no factory warranty for Onkyo does not see fit to cover their products unless you purchase them from an "authorized Onkyo dealer". So far, have not encountered anything I have not been able to figure out using the owner's manual. Hopefully, it will not need repair service anytime in the near (or distant) future. It appears that Amazon is an authorized Onkyo dealer.
Guess you can tell, I'm happy with this HTIB. It has the level of sound quality and power that I wanted. It was money well spent. Don't comprimise sound quality just to get a system with a built in DVD/Blu-ray player. The live concerts Direct TV broadcasts periodically are great with this system and a 52" LCD TV.
After watching a live Jethro Tull concert last weekend and a live Toto concert this weekend with this thing cranked up just right, must add: if you have a hang up about the size of the speakers, do yourself a big favor and get past it.
May 2010: See that Amazon now has a similar looking Onkyo 5300 model currently for sale for $39.00 more. It probably has technical improvements. Looks like it's a newer model. Check out Onkyo's website at [...].

(More customer reviews)I already have a quality 800 watt, 7.1 surround sound system via digital optical cable directly from my Macintosh computer, which produces GREAT powerful sound. So I've learned one really can't combine a whole lot of quality, power and portability in one easy to use stereo.
The iPod doesn't have the ability to transfer good sound to begin with, one can add better speakers and all, but that only goes so far.
What I needed was something to take and play in different locations without headphones, the design and price of this iLive stereo attracted me, as well as a lot of features and power input options.
The sound quality of this iLive unit is ok, much like a pair of iPod headphones is ok.
My opinion of decent sound would be something like a Bose Wave Radio or a iPod HiFi, but these items cost over 3x the amount of this iLive stereo and not suitable or lack a lot of features, power input options etc.
The iLive is priced very reasonable and makes a great general purpose iPod player, it's certainly attractive in black, which makes the black iPod w/video sort of blend right in with it like a perfect match. There is a tiny bit of background noise coming from somewhere and the bass isn't as deep as I would like (spoiled on my 200 watt sub woofer I guess), but hey it's only $79 and can play cd's, radio and iPods and charge them up too.
There is a few things I've found lacking, a handle for instance. But the strap could be made shorter. There doesn't seem to be a way to lock a iPod into place so it doesn't accidentally pop out, perhaps a piece of velcro in the right location will do the job. There is no cover either, but I guess one can be modified to protect the iPod from scratches and dirt, paint, wind blown sand and other nasties.
Overall I'm very pleased with this unit, I know it's not a kick [...] system like my expensive home stereo, but it will allow me to watch movies, TV shows (with video iPod), listen to music etc. with complete portability if the power goes out or at the gym or at the beach or campsite etc. without paying a lot.
In places like college dorms and such where thieves abound, this makes a great unit because the expensive iPod part can be taken out and the cheaper bulkier part left behind.

It certainly sounds better than the iHome (but don't expect an audiophile experience), but although it has a clock, a radio, and a sleep function, it doesn't have an alarm function to wake you to music. Seems silly not to include an alarm in a unit like this. I don't know what Logictech was thinking. I haven't had any of the failures other people have reported here. It seems to be working fine after using every day for about 1 month.

(More customer reviews)The Klipsch iFi is everything an audiophile could ask for in a self-powered 2.1 $400 dollar system. Compatibility with the iPod is a merely a bonus!
I would like to respond to the previous user's review as it is honorable, but innocently false.
I also own the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's and the Klipsch iFi's, but I'm not sure why the previous user had such a difficult time getting his iFi to sound/image better than his Promedias, so let met male this clear: In no way shape or form is the Promedia 2.1 speaker system even remotely close to the quality, finesse and craftsmanship of the Klipsch iFi. The iFi achieves a far higher level of sound clarity and precision, while being more efficient, effective and exquisite. Klipsch tested the iFi to be almost three times louder at the respective maximum SPL while even maintaining a higher discipline of distortion than the Promedias 2.1's. Yes, three times louder with better sound quality. This does not even put them in the same category. That fact alone can whole heartily explain the price difference between them, but allow me to elaborate even further. The iFi's own RSX-3 satellite speakres provide much more impact and fuller and deeper midrange from a stronger, bigger and more capable aluminum driver. The 2.1's sats use a paper cone driver which is smaller and weaker and is held to the baffle with a cheap foam surround. The iFi employs a better, more elaborate titanium horn loaded tweeter that delivers far more sound with greater accuracy than the cheap plastic ones on the 2.1's. The RSX's are far more sophisticated speakers and deliver a sound that is sonically superior and louder than the proimedia satellites. I'm sorry to undermine the previous reviewer, but he is simply wrong.
The subwoofer even divides these two systems further. The 2.1's use a smaller 6.5" woofer with less power in a small enclosure that lacks both depth and proper porting as it emits gobs of port flutter when being pushed hard. The ifi `s subwoofer is a true beast with a full 10Hz lower frequency range, higher SPL, and far less distortion. Please don't get me wrong, the Klispch 2.1's are great speakers and that's exactly why the iFi is also a great system. Because it simply doest just offer the same experience with the addition of an iPod dock for three times the money. It offers you three times the sound quality and, conveniently has an iPod dock. I should also indicate that the remote, while slightly clumsy and small, is the best iPod speaker remote available do to its range.
I would not trade four promedia 2.1 sets for my iFi's
Here are pictures so you can clearly see I have both systems. You can also see the size difference of the subwoofer and the quality difference of the speakers.
Make no mistake, the iFi's trounce the Promeida 2.1's.

That is exactly what happened to us. I even looked at it and played with it at Target before purchasing online and it seemed decent enough for the price. My 14 year old daughter begged me for it. The first one I bought lasted 3 weeks, I exchanged it for another and that one stopped after 1 week. Do not buy!

I was somewhat apprehensive since some of the reviews I have read said that there was buzzing from the speaker and low bass but since it is going in an office and would probably not be used for an office party I thought I would take a chance on it. I must say that I hear no buzzing and the bass is quite adequate. No butt thumping bass, but good enough for the intended purpose. My wife LOVES it!!! She is using her first generation Nano. It fits well, the sound quality is very good and she is so excited that she actually is looking forward to going to work and using it. The unit is so small that you cannot believe the sound. If this is something you would consider for a compact Ipod speaker system, you cannot go wrong. I may buy one for myself.

HOWEVER, be aware that it does NOT have an AM/FM radio (as advertised in the Product Overview). You can only wake to an iPod/iPhone or a buzzer alarm. I hope that Amazon will clarify this in the Overview from now on. It was a disappointment to me since I often wake to radio... but as a good-quality speaker set and an iPhone charger it will be useful.

This Sony docking station makes the music coming out of my iPod sound fantastic. I tried (and returned to a local store) several other iPod docking stations, including a tin can of a product from iHome, and I couldn't be more pleased that I perservered until I got something I love. I am pleased that I can adjust the treble and bass with precision and that music sounds good at low and high volume and everything inbetween. This sounds every bit as good as a $400 shelf system I used to use for CDs, maybe better. The remote works great and the unit takes up very little space. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

(More customer reviews)I purchased two of these units for my two son's for Christmas. One worked fine but the other had a problem cutting out as my son reported to me. When I checked the unit it was only working on one side and the sub so I gave it a few taps to see if there were loose connections. Sure enough the right side also went out leaving just the sub working. I popped the 8 screws out that hold the power amp and circuit boards in the back and sure enough a ribbon cable block connector was barely on and loose. After securely re-connecting this obvious problem and getting the unit back inside it works fine. These are good units but I think there is a problem with the ribbon cables coming loose during shipping which would explain alot of bad reviews. With a phillips screw driver and small bit of investigation the unit was back in great working condition without any need to hassle with a return or refund etc. Too bad the manufacturer doesn't blob silicone on these to secure them for the shipping which would save them and some customers alot of PITA.

With their Evolve Wireless Sound System, Griffin has produced a wonderful product that improves upon their previous iPod dock versions, namely the Amplifi. This iPod dock provides wireless satellite speakers that can be moved around your home independently within a very wide range. The integrated black and grey design is sleek and streamlined. The unit is still not as "portable" as some pure docks might be, but the base and satellite speaker design provides better sound and more connection options. This is what Griffin fans have come to expect, very good sound and all-around design.
Pros

+ Li-ion batteries are listed as providing 10 hours of charge, but seem to perform longer
+ Very respectable power and sound output
+ Sleek design with a slim base and square satellite speakers is attractive and functional
+ Two satellite speakers each include on/off switches and sleep modes for improved battery life
+ Built-in amplification in the charging base provides nice sound clarity
+ RF remote provides good wireless range
+ Great output connectors including S-Video, composite video and RCA for a wide range of connections

Cons
- Base still needs power connection in order to function, preventing pure mobile use
- The system is somewhat light and feels less durable than what one would ideally like
- Somewhat underwhelming remote control could have used more controls
- Not to be greedy, but a real subwoofer would have really put this over the top for me
- As with any wireless speaker system, there is a possibility it may cause interference with older home electronics
While the Griffin Evolve's sound doesn't reach the very highest end of the sound quality spectrum, the wide range of connectors allow you to integrate additional speaker and receiver options. These certainly still sound great, comparable to the Amplifi. Griffin Technology 1200-ITSPKR Amplifi Home Music System for iPod They are designed for well tuned all-around sound with a steady range and great mid-range and high range sounds. The sound they provide is perhaps second to the Harmon Kardon dock Harman Kardon - Portable Speakers and Docking Station for iPod, but what they provide in features will more than make up for that in this target market.
Operation is a snap. The main complaints one can have, which are minor, come from the very minimal design which is a Griffin trademark. In the case of the remote, the design could have been enhanced with more features. Also, the cases shape is nice but provides little to keep the speakers in place apart from the charging points they rest on. Only time will tell how durable this system is.
One thing that Griffin has accomplished is full compatibility with all iPods, including the iPod Touch. Apple iPod touch 32 GB With so many docks having bugs and compatibility issues, Griffin truly nailed this.
The price is high, but still provides a great value when you consider everything that's included with the system. The connectors alone are an improvement over many iPod docs on the market. Overall, this is a great set. Give the Evolve a try and see for yourself.

(More customer reviews)I had my eye on a Sony Boombox with I-Pod dock for some time. I went into Bestbuy to check them out and I found this little gem for $60. I have Insignia cpu speakers and they sound great, but I didn't know they were in the boombox biz. There were 2 different Sony models next to it on the display shelf, one was $80 and the other was $120. This Insignia's sound blew both Sony's away! I couldn't believe it. Both Sony's sounded like my clock radio was going off, terrible, hollow sound. The Insignia has 5 different equalizer modes: Rock, Pop, Jazz, Classical & Flat. The I-pod dock plays my 5th Gen. Nano just fine. It has a CD player and 10 FM/ 10 AM presets. For those of you that have Sony Boomboxes, you need to check out the sound on this Insignia. You won't believe your ears. It also comes with a remote control.

(More customer reviews)Bought the Kicker ZK350 Zune speaker doc along with the battery attachment. The sound is terrific, with plenty of bass and it's plenty loud for its size. 5 stars for sound - very nice. The Amazon price is also quite good.
The electronics, however, are woeful. It flakes out pretty much every time I attempt to turn it on. I have to unplug it/plug it in to reset it. 2 stars for the electronics - at least it hasn't not worked yet.
The form-factor is quite nice, and is very easy to carry around. It has bass & treble adjustments. It would be nice if the Zune HD had more equalizer adjustments rather than just the pre-sets. To me, the included remote is only good for pausing & skipping songs, sound adjustments, and turning it off. Selecting music must be done on the Zune itself, which is slightly clunky when the Zune is attached to the speakers. Also, the Zune is slightly exposed if something were to fall on it or knock into it.
I had to return the first unit because it was super flaky. Kudos to Amazon's return process, however. It was smooth and flawless.

iMode Clock Radio with iPod Docking Station Review

(More customer reviews)I got this as a christmas present, and was sorely disappointed. Avid music listener as I am, I immediately plugged my iPod in to the iMode. I was disappointed to find that the sound quality lacked depth and fullness. In fact, I have an aged set of speakers from Altec Lansing (which I bought for maybe $10 at a garage sale) and their sound quality is exponentially better than the iMode's. And when I play my music loudly, the iMode makes a rattling noise, because apparently one of the buttons is a bit loose. Oh, and I set the alarm this morning, and I have no idea what happened, but it didn't go off. If you're looking for an alarm clock for your ipod with good sound quality, look elsewhere. My friend has the iPlace (I think), and it sounds much better than mine.

(More customer reviews)I was uncertain at first if the quality of sound from this small system would do the XM radio justice. I was very impressed after I hooked up the system and heard the quality sound radiate from the Altec system.
I decided on Altec due to its size (bigger Boomboxes are available but space hogs). Its stylish design fits nicely on my bookshelf and it's clean design goes well with any decor.
One thing purchasers need to be aware of is that the antenna needs to be placed close..really close, to a window to receive the satellite signal. I have'nt found anything negative to say about this system, well done Altec Lansing. I'm giving it 4 stars simply for the fact I would have liked to seen more user controls on the system.
